You can save on heating without making your home uncomfortable: start by heating only when you need it, reducing drafts, and keeping your system maintained. The best combination depends on your climate, home, heating equipment, and household routine, so treat savings estimates as possibilities—not guarantees. The guidance below is from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE); it does not include interviews with HVAC professionals.
Start with low-cost changes you can make now
Set the thermostat back while you sleep or are away
Use a programmable thermostat schedule, or lower the setting manually during predictable periods when the home is empty or everyone is asleep. DOE estimates that setting a thermostat back while away or asleep can save up to 10% on heating and cooling costs. Its renter guidance estimates up to 10% on heating from a 7–10°F setback for eight hours a day. These are broad estimates, not promised results for an individual home; comfort, health needs, weather, and heating-system type all matter. Find and reduce suitable drafts
Check for small gaps around window and door frames. DOE recommends caulk for suitable fixed gaps and weatherstripping for movable joints. Renters should use removable or otherwise permitted materials and check lease terms first. Do not block combustion-air openings or ventilation intended for safety. Check the heating-system filter
Inspect a central heating filter monthly and replace it when dirty. DOE’s winter guidance says to replace it at least every three months; follow the equipment maker’s instructions if they differ. Use a ceiling fan to circulate warm air
If your ceiling fan supports reverse, set it to clockwise at low speed in winter to move warm air near the ceiling toward the occupied area. A fan circulates air; it does not raise the room’s temperature, and the effect depends on room layout and fan settings. Turn it off when the room is empty. DOE’s winter tips describe the setting.
Choose work that fits your home and whether you rent
Renter-friendly steps
Scheduling setbacks, checking the filter where you are responsible for it, and using permitted removable draft seals are practical starting points. Ask the property owner before making permanent changes or arranging work on ducts, insulation, or heating equipment.

Owner or professional work

Maintain the system—and don’t judge it by efficiency alone
Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance requirements and use a qualified HVAC professional for service that requires technical work. DOE notes that furnace efficiency by itself does not ensure lower energy use: sizing, installation, maintenance, and duct leakage also affect performance. Its furnace purchasing guidance discusses those factors.
DOE says combining efficient equipment with recommended insulation, air sealing, and thermostat settings can produce savings of about 30%. That is a broad estimate for combined measures, not a forecast for a particular household or a figure to add to the thermostat estimates above. A sensible order of operations
- Set a schedule: Try a setback during regular sleep and away periods, adjusting it to household comfort and needs.
- Inspect simple trouble spots: Look for suitable small gaps around windows and doors, and check the filter monthly.
- Use circulation selectively: Reverse a compatible ceiling fan to low clockwise speed in occupied rooms, then switch it off when those rooms are empty.
