Healthy houseplants depend on conditions that suit the particular plant—not a fixed watering schedule or routine treatments. Match each plant to the light, temperature and humidity in its spot, check the growing medium before watering, and investigate several possible causes before treating a symptom.
Choose a plant for the conditions you have
Before choosing a houseplant or deciding where to put one, check its needs for light, water, temperature and humidity. Conditions differ from room to room and across the seasons, so a plant that thrives by one window may struggle in another spot in the same home. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) advises researching the needs of the particular plant rather than relying on a room label such as “bright” or “humid.”
Light
Make the most of natural daylight. A position well back from a window may receive very little light, while strong summer sun through glass can scorch leaves that are sensitive to direct sun. Weak winter daylight may mean moving a plant to a brighter position. Ordinary household bulbs are not a substitute for horticultural grow lights.
Consider an indoor plant grow light only when natural light cannot meet the plant’s needs. Specialized horticultural lighting is available for this purpose; the fixture, its placement and its operating schedule depend on the plant and equipment, so there is no universal wattage, distance or timer setting. Account for the fixture’s energy use and the space it occupies, and prioritize available daylight first.

Humidity and temperature
Bathrooms and kitchens are often more humid than centrally heated living rooms, which can be dry. A tropical plant that needs humid air may develop brown foliage or fail to thrive in dry conditions. Temperature also varies with room and season: direct sun, radiators, cold nights and draughts can stress a plant. Match the species to the actual conditions where it will live.
Water by checking the plant and its growing medium
Do not water automatically by calendar. Watering needs change with the plant, its growth, the room temperature and the season. Check the compost surface; a pot often feels lighter when the growing medium is dry. You can also check moisture a few centimetres below the surface and water if it is very dry.

Make sure the pot can drain, and empty excess water rather than leaving the plant standing in it. Both too little and too much water can cause wilting, so inspect the medium before adding more. A wilted plant is not, by itself, proof that it needs water.
Choose compost for the plant
There is no single compost formula for every houseplant. Choose a growing medium that suits the species and its drainage needs. As one example, the RHS describes peat-free cactus and succulent mix containing sand and/or grit for improved drainage. That mix is not a default choice for plants with different requirements.

Feed and repot when the plant’s growth calls for it
Feeding is generally most relevant during active growth, broadly from spring to autumn, but timing depends on the plant and local conditions. The RHS suggests liquid fertiliser once or twice a month, or quarter-strength fertiliser with each watering during the growing season. These are general options, not an all-species prescription: follow the product label and the plant’s needs, and do not apply fertiliser to dry soil.
If growth is lacklustre or flowering is poor, fresh peat-free compost may help. A plant that dries very quickly and makes little growth may be pot-bound and could need a larger pot. These signs are clues to check, not proof that feeding or repotting is needed.

Diagnose symptoms before changing care
Yellow leaves, wilting and damaged edges can have several causes. Check the growing medium, light, temperature, humidity, nutrition, pests and nearby environmental stressors before intervening. Changing several things at once can make it harder to identify what is affecting the plant.
| What you notice | Possible clues to check | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Weak, spindly growth or pale leaves | Insufficient light may be a cause. | Compare the plant’s light needs with the daylight at its current position. |
| Scorched patches | Strong direct sun can damage susceptible leaves. | Check whether direct sun falls on the plant, especially through glass. |
| Wilting, crispy edges or leaf drop | Underwatering is one possibility, but overwatering can also cause wilting. | Check moisture below the surface and look at the roots and stems if overwatering is suspected. |
| Yellowing of both old and new leaves, stem rot or dark, mushy roots | These can be signs of overwatering. | Check drainage and the growing medium before adding water. |
| Crispy brown leaf tips | Low humidity may contribute. | Consider the room’s humidity as well as heat, cold, draughts and other stressors. |
| Leaf damage without a clear watering or light cause | Pests, nutrient issues or residue from cleaning products can also cause visible damage. | Inspect the plant and its surroundings before choosing a remedy. |
The RHS Advice Team puts the emphasis on conditions: “Healthy houseplants rely on the right conditions rather than routine treatments.” It also notes that “In the vast majority of cases, problems with our houseplants can be resolved by simply tweaking the growing environment and the care we give them.”

Inspect plants regularly, including their leaves, leaf undersides, containers and saucers. University of Minnesota Extension recommends looking for insects, webbing, holes, eggs and sticky honeydew; a ten-power hand lens can help reveal small pests. Isolate a newly acquired plant for one to two weeks so a potential pest problem has time to become visible. If you find pests on a plant, isolate it from others.
- Keep plants in good general condition and ensure pots drain.
- Water at the base rather than wetting leaves, remove dead material and wipe leaves with a damp cloth.
- Use non-chemical or biological controls where pest control is needed; pesticides should not be the automatic first response.
A hand lens is an optional aid for inspection, not a requirement for keeping houseplants. Clean secateurs can be useful for pruning fully damaged leaves, but first identify and address any underlying cause.
Adjust advice to your home and local season
RHS guidance is UK-oriented, so seasonal examples such as weaker winter daylight should be adapted to your hemisphere. Indoor conditions still depend on the particular room, window, heating and draughts. General care advice is a starting point; plant-specific instructions take precedence when they differ.
