If you suspect a garage-door spring has broken, stop using the door and contact a qualified garage-door technician. Do not operate the opener or try to lift the door. Torsion and extension springs work differently, but both can store hazardous tension; replacing one safely depends on the exact door and spring system, not just the spring’s appearance.

What to do if you suspect a spring has broken

Do not use the door or its opener while a spring may be broken. Wayne Dalton advises waiting for a professional assessment rather than opening the door or attempting to operate it. Wayne Dalton’s spring-replacement guidance explains its recommended response.

Arrange service from a qualified garage-door technician. A spring that has failed needs replacement, not a patch, and the replacement must be sized for the specific door. The door’s manufacturer may also direct owners to professional service for damaged springs; see Clopay’s installation and maintenance guidance.

How to tell torsion springs from extension springs

You can usually distinguish the systems by where the springs sit and how they work. Look only from a safe distance; do not touch, adjust, or attempt to test a spring.

System Typical location and action Clopay residential headroom guidance Important safety detail
Torsion Above the door, mounted on a metal shaft; the spring turns on the shaft to help lift the door. Wayne Dalton Clopay specifies 12 inches for its standard torsion and EZ-SET torsion systems. This is Clopay planning guidance, not a universal clearance rule; the door’s configuration-specific instructions control. Clopay Winding or unwinding the spring can be dangerous. Clopay calls manual torsion-spring winding “extremely difficult and potentially dangerous.” Clopay’s safety checklist
Extension Typically along the sides of the door; the springs stretch and contract to counterbalance it. This system can be useful where headroom is limited. Wayne Dalton Clopay specifies 10 inches for its standard extension and EZ-SET extension systems. This is Clopay planning guidance, not a universal clearance rule; the door’s configuration-specific instructions control. Clopay Containment matters: Clopay says its extension springs include containment cables and advises that standard extension springs alongside the door should include one. Do not assume every spring or installation has this feature. Clopay · Clopay installation guidance

Headroom figures vary by manufacturer and configuration. Use the instructions for the specific door and spring system rather than treating these Clopay figures as general dimensions.

Why spring replacement is not routine homeowner maintenance

Springs counterbalance the door by storing and releasing force. Working on them can expose you to that stored tension, and a mistake can cause serious injury. Clopay warns that bottom brackets can be under extreme tension; do not loosen them. Its safety guidance also cautions against manual torsion-spring winding.

Wayne Dalton’s spring-replacement guidance states: “For your safety, it is best not to attempt to disconnect, unwind or replace springs on your own.” The company recommends professional service for suspected spring failure. Clopay’s product-specific EZ-SET system has its own instructions, but it is not a general endorsement of homeowner spring replacement or a substitute for instructions that match the door.

How to get the right replacement and instructions

Springs are not interchangeable simply because they look similar. The correct spring must match the specific door and spring system; incorrect sizing can leave the door improperly balanced. Before arranging service, note the door’s manufacturer and model if readily available, and whether the visible system appears to use torsion springs above the door or extension springs along the sides. Do not remove parts or measure a spring yourself.
