How do I protect my home studio from Austin storms?
Austin guidance identifies thunderstorms, tornado risk, straight-line winds, hail and flash floods as local hazards. In an April 13, 2026 notice, Austin Emergency Management Director Jim Redick said, “Severe weather and flash flooding are a year-round hazard for Central Texas.” Check current alerts rather than assuming storms are limited to one season. Before severe weather
- Secure loose outdoor furniture, tools and other objects that wind could move.
- Trim branches that could fall onto the home or studio.
- Know where to shelter: Austin advises going to an interior room on the lowest level when severe weather approaches.
- Monitor trusted weather alerts and make sure you can receive watches and warnings.
- Keep valuable studio items and backups off the floor when feasible, especially where water could enter. This is a practical precaution, not a City equipment-specific recommendation.

What should I check if my roof leaks?
Use a visual maintenance checklist; a distant or ground-level look cannot diagnose a roof. Austin Development Services recommends checking that roof covering, soffit and fascia are intact and in good repair, and checking gutters and downspouts for leaks. - From a safe location, look for missing, loose or visibly damaged roofing materials and water marks inside the home.
- Check whether gutters and downspouts appear damaged, blocked or leaky; clear drainage paths only if it is safe to do so.
- If damage is suspected, arrange a qualified inspection or repair. Do not climb onto a wet or storm-damaged roof.
- For a repair, ask what the inspection and proposed work cover, check qualifications relevant to that work, and request a written estimate and insurance documentation. Austin advises using reputable repair businesses after storm damage.
The City checklist does not prescribe a roofing material, sealant, repair method or price. It cannot establish the condition of an individual roof.
If you rent
Notify the owner or property manager about a roof or drainage hazard. If a code issue remains unresolved, Austin Development Services points residents to 3-1-1 for reporting. Safe At Home.

What should I do if water reaches the studio?
Put personal safety ahead of saving equipment. Austin warns against entering spaces where water intrusion may involve electrical hazards, collapsing walls or ceilings, or slip hazards. Do not handle wet equipment or anything that may still be plugged in; the City material does not provide equipment-specific recovery instructions. Notify the owner or management company if you rent. - Only if the area is safe, catch dripping water in containers, move belongings away from direct exposure, and look for the source without entering a hazardous space.
- Avoid potentially contaminated water.
- After flooding, return only when authorities say it is safe. Before entering, check the home’s exterior for loose power lines, damaged gas lines, foundation cracks or missing support beams.
- Stay away from downed electrical lines.

How do I keep a home studio safer during a power outage?
Keep a backup way to receive weather information that does not depend on household power. Austin suggests considering a battery- or solar-powered weather alert or AM/FM radio at home. A battery-powered NOAA weather radio is one option; the City guidance does not endorse a particular brand or model. Austin severe-weather guidance.
Austin also advises unplugging appliances and turning off most lights during an outage to help reduce overload when power returns. Follow safety instructions from local authorities and utility providers, and do not touch equipment exposed to water.

How should I manage studio heat?
Follow local heat-safety advice, including staying hydrated and using appropriate cooling precautions. Austin Emergency Management’s June 17, 2026 heat notice described summer temperatures as reaching 100 degrees and higher; that is a dated seasonal warning, not a current forecast or a measurement inside your studio. Do not treat general residential habitability or HVAC guidance as an operating specification for instruments, computers or recording equipment. Safe temperature and humidity ranges vary by product; use the manufacturer’s documentation for each device. The City guidance does not establish studio-equipment thresholds.
