Use figure-eight or ladder stitches to reduce a slightly oversized opening, dense buttonhole or blanket stitches to cover frayed edges, and a backing or patch when fabric is missing.
Choose a repair that matches the damage
Test the opening with the button that belongs there and inspect the edges. The repair depends on whether the buttonhole is merely loose, has frayed or torn edges, or has lost fabric.
| Damage | Suitable repair | Visibility |
|---|---|---|
| Loose or frayed buttonhole thread, with fabric intact | Remove loose thread and resew the edge with closely spaced buttonhole or blanket stitches. | Matching hand stitches can blend into the garment. |
| Opening stretched too wide, but edges remain intact | Stabilize from the wrong side and work figure-eight or ladder stitches inward to reduce the opening. | Usually subtle with matching thread. |
| Torn edge or missing fabric | Add a backing patch and sew through it; a top patch is another option when the damage needs fresh fabric or a salvaged buttonhole. | A backing patch can be concealed; a top patch is visible. |
| Buttonhole strip destroyed | Replace the damaged strip with new backing and facing, then make a new buttonhole. | More extensive alteration. |
The U.S. government clothing-repair manual recognizes that damaged buttonholes may be repaired or replaced and describes adding material behind the strip, using a top patch, or replacing the strip with new backing and facing: clothing-repair manual.
Gather the supplies
- Seam ripper or small scissors for removing damaged thread and trimming loose fibers.
- Needle and matching strong thread for hand repair.
- Lightweight, non-stretch fusible interfacing to stabilize the wrong side.
- For machine work: a suitable buttonhole foot or satin/zigzag setting, stabilizer, and scrap fabric for a test. A gimp cord can support the edge on stretch fabric.
- For substantial damage: patch fabric or material for a replacement facing and backing.
Sewing.org advises stabilizing ravelly or stretchy garment fabric on the wrong side with lightweight interfacing fused in place: buttonhole guidelines. Follow the interfacing maker’s pressing directions, especially when working with delicate or heat-sensitive fabric.

Repair a stretched or frayed buttonhole by hand
- Check the fit. Put the actual button through the hole. Mark the opening length you need, and identify whether the problem is excess width, loose stitching, fraying, or missing fabric.
- Remove only damaged stitching. Carefully lift frayed buttonhole thread with a seam ripper. Keep fingers out of its path; Brother cautions that a seam ripper can slip.
- Trim loose material. Snip ragged thread ends and loose fibers without cutting sound fabric. Do not enlarge the opening. If it is stretched, mark the smaller target opening.
- Stabilize the wrong side. Fuse a small piece of lightweight, non-stretch interfacing behind the damaged area, following its manufacturer’s pressing directions. This helps prevent the fabric from stretching as you sew.
- Reduce a slightly oversized opening. With matching strong thread, work figure-eight or ladder stitches from one side inward until the opening fits the button. Tie off on the inside.
- Rebuild a frayed edge. Work closely spaced buttonhole or blanket stitches around the cut edge. Keep stitch depth and spacing even, and reinforce each end with a compact bar tack.
- Test the repair. Fasten and unfasten the garment several times by hand. The button should pass without force, and the repaired edge should not pull or distort.
When to use a machine or patch
Machine-resew a suitable garment
If the fabric and machine allow it, place stabilizer beneath or behind the work and use the correct buttonhole foot or satin/zigzag setting. Make a test buttonhole on scrap fabric first to check the size and stitch density. On stretch fabric, a gimp cord under the stitches can help support the edge.
Back a hole with missing fabric
Baste a backing patch behind the placket, then sew the buttonhole through both layers. A top patch can cover more severe damage or provide fresh fabric for a new buttonhole. Choose a patch that can withstand the garment’s use and avoid placing bulky seams where the button must pass.

Replace a destroyed buttonhole strip
When the strip itself cannot be repaired, cut away the damaged section. Seam new backing to a new facing, fold and topstitch the replacement into place, then make a new buttonhole. This is a larger alteration than rebuilding one opening; the government clothing-repair manual also describes replacing a damaged strip with new backing and facing.
