To make your home smell fresh, find and reduce the odor source first. Clean the affected area, fix moisture problems, and bring in outdoor air when conditions allow. Air fresheners can add fragrance without removing the cause, while filtration is only a supplement for certain pollutants.
Start by finding the odor source
Work from the places and materials most likely to hold an unwanted smell: damp items, trash, food residue, drains, fabrics, pet areas, smoke, and recently used cleaning or fragrance products. These are useful places to inspect, not a definitive diagnostic checklist. A persistent or unusual odor may need further investigation; fragrance or a purifier cannot tell you what caused it.
Odor is not a safety test. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cautions: “You should not rely on odor or complaints about smells to determine what is good or safe for your health or your indoor environment.” Some hazards, including carbon monoxide and radon, have no odor. A pleasant-smelling room—or one with no noticeable smell—is not proof that its air is safe. EPA: A View Indoors
Remove the source and clean what it affected
When you find the likely cause, remove or reduce it where possible, then clean the affected surface or material in a way suited to it. Follow product labels, ventilate while using products that may affect indoor air, and never mix cleaning products unless their instructions specifically direct you to. Air fresheners and other consumer products can contribute to indoor particulate matter, so adding another scented product may make the air smell different without making it cleaner. Treat mustiness as a moisture warning
A musty smell can be a clue to damp materials or a water problem. Find and repair the source of moisture, then dry wet materials within 24–48 hours. Aim to keep indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%. A hygrometer can help you check humidity, but measurement does not replace fixing a leak or drying wet materials. EPA moisture guidance
An air purifier cannot repair a leak or stop moisture-driven mold growth. EPA notes that portable air cleaners and HVAC filters do not address the cause of mold or musty odors. If dampness persists, deal with the water and humidity problem rather than trying to cover the smell. EPA: Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home

Ventilate when outdoor conditions are suitable
Open windows or doors when it is appropriate to do so, and use kitchen or bathroom exhaust fans that vent outdoors to remove pollutants near their source. This is especially useful during cooking or cleaning. Outdoor air is not always suitable to bring inside, so consider local conditions before opening up. Most home heating and cooling systems do not mechanically bring in fresh outdoor air. EPA: Improving Indoor Air Quality
Use an air cleaner only for a suitable leftover problem
Source control and ventilation come first; a portable air cleaner may help supplement them. Choose a unit intended for the room where it will run. For airborne particles, compare the clean air delivery rate (CADR) with the room area. CADR measures particle-cleaning performance, not gas removal.

For residual gas odors, look for activated carbon or another filter specifically designed for gases. EPA says there is no widely used performance rating system for gas removal, so a particle CADR cannot show how well a unit handles gases. No cleaner removes every pollutant, and filters require routine replacement. Avoid devices that intentionally produce ozone. EPA does not certify or recommend particular air-cleaner brands or models. Air fresheners can make a room smell more fragrant, but they do not establish that an odor source has been removed or that indoor air is safe. EPA reports that people spend about 90% of their time indoors; the guide reporting that figure does not state a publication year. The practical priority is still to reduce the source, manage moisture, and ventilate when appropriate—not to judge air quality by scent. EPA: Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home

- Remove and clean: Reduce the likely source and clean affected areas appropriately, following product labels and not mixing products unless instructed.
- Fix dampness: Repair the water source, dry wet materials within 24–48 hours, and keep relative humidity below 60%, ideally 30–50%.
- Ventilate: When outdoor conditions allow, open windows or doors and use exhaust fans that vent outdoors.
- Consider filtration: If a specific airborne problem remains, select a room-appropriate cleaner and match its filter type to particles or gases.
