Baking soda, vinegar, and citrus can help with some household cleaning tasks, but they are not interchangeable and none is a universal cleaner. Baking soda is a mild abrasive and deodorizer; vinegar and citrus juice are acids that may help on selected deposits and surfaces but can damage stone, some fabrics, and aluminum. Choose by the task and material, follow the surface maker’s care instructions, and never mix household cleaning products—especially vinegar with chlorine bleach.

Choose an ingredient for the task and surface

These ingredients work in different ways. The University of Florida IFAS Extension and Alabama Cooperative Extension describe limited uses for baking soda, vinegar, and lemon juice; those examples are not formulas for every finish. Before cleaning, check the care instructions for the specific surface and try a small, inconspicuous area when the material is suitable for testing.

Ingredient What it may help with Important limits
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) A mild abrasive for suitable cleaning jobs and a deodorizer; extension guidance also describes a paste for general cleaning and grout. Its abrasive action may not suit delicate finishes. It is not harmless if swallowed in quantity; keep it away from children.
Vinegar An acid that may help with some mineral deposits and selected cleaning tasks; UF/IFAS describes diluted vinegar for some ceramic tile cleaning. Do not use it on marble or granite. Acids can etch or weaken stone or its sealant, and vinegar must never be mixed with chlorine bleach.
Citrus juice or citrus-based cleaner An acidic option for selected cleaning or deodorizing tasks. UF/IFAS describes lemon or vinegar with salt for tarnished copper. Avoid on marble and granite; acids may damage natural stone or its sealant. The sources cited here do not establish citrus as a general disinfectant.

Use baking soda as a mild scrub, not a universal cleaner

A baking soda paste can be useful for general cleaning or grout where the surface can tolerate mild abrasion. Apply gently, then rinse as appropriate and follow the material’s care guidance. Avoid assuming that a paste is safe for a delicate or polished finish; the abrasive action itself can be the problem.

Baking soda also has deodorizing uses, but cleaning use does not make it safe to eat. Poison Control warns that swallowing too much can cause serious toxicity. Keep it in its original container and out of children’s reach.

Use vinegar and citrus only on acid-compatible materials

Vinegar and citrus juice are acids. They may help with some mineral deposits, grime, grease, or stains, but an acid can harm the material being cleaned. UF/IFAS describes diluted vinegar for some ceramic tile cleaning. Alabama Cooperative Extension cautions that vinegar and lemon juice can harm natural stone, some fabrics, and aluminum.

Do not use them on marble or granite

Avoid vinegar- or citrus-based cleaners on marble and granite. Alabama Cooperative Extension and UC Agriculture and Natural Resources warn that acids may etch or weaken the stone or its sealant. UC ANR’s homemade citrus cleaner guidance specifically says not to use the preparation on granite or marble.

Match the cleaner to the finish

Even when an ingredient is suitable for one surface, that does not establish it is suitable for another finish in the same room. Follow the product or surface maker’s instructions, use only a recommended dilution where applicable, and rinse when appropriate. Do not use acid-based cleaners on an uncertain material without checking its care guidance.

Can you mix vinegar and baking soda?

Mixing them produces fizz because the acid and alkali react and generate carbon dioxide. That visible reaction does not show that the mixture has become a stronger all-purpose cleaner. Poison Control says the combination is unlikely to remove tough oil or grease drain clogs, so do not rely on it as a dependable drain-clearing method.

Never mix vinegar with bleach or other cleaning products

Poison Control’s guidance is direct: “Never mix household cleaning products!” Vinegar or another acid mixed with chlorine bleach can release highly irritating chlorine gas. Do not combine cleaners unless a product label specifically directs it, and use cleaners with thorough ventilation.

If a mixture produces fumes, leave the area and contact Poison Control or emergency services as appropriate. Do not try to neutralize the mixture yourself. In the United States, Poison Control can be reached online at Poison.org or by calling 1-800-222-1222.

Handle accidental exposure promptly

Keep cleaning ingredients in their original containers and away from children. If vinegar gets in an eye, Poison Control advises rinsing immediately with plenty of room-temperature water and removing contact lenses. For a concerning exposure or possible ingestion, contact Poison Control for guidance; call emergency services for urgent symptoms.
