For a classroom tree that stands on its own, build a broad cardboard base and a stiff trunk first, then add lightweight branches and folded paper leaves. For a wall display, skip the base and make the trunk and branches from kraft paper or cardboard attached securely to the wall. A small mock-up helps check the shape and weak points before you cut the full-size pieces.
Choose a freestanding tree or a wall display
A freestanding tree needs a stable base, a perpendicular trunk and balanced branches. A wall display uses less structural material, but its attachment must suit the wall and the display’s size. Sketch the silhouette and decide where it will go before building. For a freestanding classroom display, the California Learning Resource Network guide suggests a trunk 2–4 feet tall and a base 1.5–2.5 feet wide; treat those as recommendations, not universal engineering requirements. Gather materials and prepare the design
- Corrugated cardboard or recycled boxes for the trunk, base and sturdy branches.
- Brown butcher or kraft paper for branch coverings or bark texture.
- Green construction paper or cardstock for leaves.
- Glue stick, PVA/white glue or tape for paper; hot glue can help join structural cardboard.
- Crayons, markers or pencils, plus optional tissue or crepe paper and lightweight decorations.
- Child-safe scissors for students. An adult should handle utility knives and hot glue, or closely supervise their use.
Make a small paper or cardstock model to check the proportions and identify joints that may need extra support. Plan the base footprint and the branch arrangement together: branches should spread evenly rather than load one side of the trunk.
Build a freestanding cardboard tree
1. Make the trunk
For a shaped trunk, cut two matching cardboard profiles. Score one piece where it needs to bend, then join the edges to create a hollow trunk. Alternatively, open recycled cardboard boxes, roll them into cylinders, tape the seams and stack the sections to reach the chosen height. Secure the sections together so the trunk behaves as one piece.

2. Attach a broad base
Cut a circular or polygonal base wider than the trunk. Cut a slot just wider than the trunk, insert the trunk and glue it upright. If the trunk flexes, add triangular cardboard gussets between trunk and base. Another support method is to cut slots in two trunk-shaped pieces and slide them together at right angles so they interlock.
3. Add branches
Trace branch shapes onto cardboard or brown kraft paper and cut a mix of lengths and thicknesses. Score or gently crumple paper branches to add bark-like texture. Attach the largest branches lower on the trunk, then distribute the others around it to keep the silhouette balanced. Use cardboard for branches that need to carry more weight.

4. Make and attach leaves
Cut leaves from construction paper or cardstock. Fold each leaf down the middle and gently fold its edges inward for a raised, three-dimensional look. Attach leaves with glue or tape, keeping them light enough that they do not pull branches out of position.
5. Check the structure
Inspect the joints and gently shake the tree to check for looseness or wobble. Strengthen weak connections and keep decorations lightweight. Do not place the paper structure near heat sources or other flammable materials. If adding lights, use cool, battery-operated LEDs.

Make it a changing classroom display
Leaves can carry the lesson as well as decorate the tree. Use green leaves for a science display, change their colors to explore seasons, or add names or photos for a family-tree activity. Students can write research findings, stories or seasonal messages on individual leaves, then update the display as the class learns. Safety, care and storage
- Adults should handle sharp knives and hot glue; supervise students closely around these tools.
- Keep the base broad, the trunk upright and decorations light. Recheck joints if the tree is moved.
- Keep paper and cardboard away from heat and flame. Use only cool battery-operated LEDs if lighting is part of the display.
- Dust the tree periodically. Store any disassembled parts in a dry, protected place.
