A squeaky door often needs no more than a careful hinge check and the right repair. First find whether the sound comes from a dry hinge, loose screws, dirt, rust, damaged hardware, or a door rubbing against its frame; then address that cause instead of repeatedly applying lubricant.
1. Find what is making the door squeak
Open and close the door slowly, listening near each hinge to locate the noise. Inspect the hinge leaves and pin for dirt, rust, corrosion, or visible damage. Check for loose screws, and watch whether the door rubs or binds against the frame as it moves.
These clues point to different repairs: a dry but intact hinge may need lubrication, while loose screws, buildup, damaged hardware, or poor fit call for their own fixes.
2. Tighten loose hinge screws carefully
If a screw is loose, tighten it with a screwdriver, then test the door. Do not force the screw once it is snug: overtightening can strip or break the screw or damage the wood, as Home Depot cautions in its squeaky-door repair guide.

3. Lubricate a dry, intact hinge
For a sound hinge that appears dry, apply a lubricant intended for hinges to the squeaky hinge pin. Lowe’s recommends a high-quality silicone-based lubricant for hinges and moving parts in its door repair guide. Follow the product label, protect nearby surfaces, and wipe away excess.
Open and close the door several times to work the lubricant through the hinge. If lubrication does not quiet the door, avoid adding more automatically: check again for buildup, damage, another noisy hinge, or rubbing against the frame.

4. Clean buildup or replace damaged hardware
When cleaning may help
If dirt or buildup is visible and the hinge pin is removable, cleaning the pin may help. Support the door securely before removing a pin, and follow the hinge maker’s instructions. Lowe’s discusses cleaning as a possible step in its repair guidance.
When replacement is the better option
A bent, badly rusted, or otherwise damaged hinge may need replacement rather than more lubricant. Choose a replacement that matches the existing hinge’s dimensions, corner radius, finish, pin style, and intended use; there is no single fit for every door. Home Depot’s removable-pin residential hinge listing is one example, not a universal compatibility recommendation.

5. Check alignment if the door rubs or binds
If the door scrapes the frame, catches, or binds, lubrication alone may not address the cause. Recheck how the door sits and moves, along with the hinges and their attachment points. If the noise remains after tightening or lubricating a sound hinge, investigate fit and alignment instead of treating every squeak as a dry pin.
