Is No Mow May Bad for Your Lawn and Wildlife? What to Know

No Mow May is not automatically bad—or beneficial. Its effects depend on flowering plants, turf growth, and how you manage the lawn afterward.

Sometimes—but not for every lawn. Skipping mowing in May can let existing flowers feed pollinators, but a lawn with few flowering plants gains little from simply leaving it long. Meanwhile, letting vigorous turf grow tall and then cutting it back abruptly can stress the grass. The more dependable approach is to mow higher and less often, or create a deliberate flowering area that provides habitat beyond one month.

Why can No Mow May backfire for a lawn?

A delayed cut can stress fast-growing turf

In a warm spring, grass may grow quickly while mowing is on hold. Cutting it very short afterward removes too much leaf at once and can weaken the turf. University of Minnesota Turfgrass Science advises removing no more than one-third of the grass height in a single mowing. If the lawn has grown well beyond your normal cutting height, lower it gradually over multiple cuts rather than scalping it in one pass. That gradual approach follows the one-third rule; it has not been established as a universal recovery schedule.

Heavy clippings can smother patches

A catch-up cut can leave thick clumps of clippings, especially where growth has been lush. Remove heavy mats that cover the grass rather than leaving them in place. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension cautions that thick clumps on lush, fertilized lawns may mold. Its May 2023 advice for that local context is to mow when growth reaches about 4 inches or more, maintain a 3-to-4-inch cutting height, and mow less often; conditions and suitable heights vary by lawn and region.

One month without mowing does not create habitat by itself

Pollinator value depends substantially on which plants are present and flowering. Wisconsin Extension says turfgrass-only lawns provide little to no pollinator resources, while lawns with low-growing flowers can supply pollen and nectar. Leaving a patch of grass unmown cannot make it a useful flower-rich habitat if there is little for pollinators to feed on.

Can No Mow May still help pollinators?

Yes, particularly where plants already growing in the lawn flower during May. Dandelions and other flowering lawn plants can provide nectar or pollen, according to Wisconsin Extension. The University of Minnesota’s Eric Watkins gave a qualified answer to whether not mowing in May helps pollinators: “Maybe, especially if you have plants in your lawn that can flower in May.”

That is a conditional benefit, not proof that all unmown lawns help wildlife. The available extension guidance and studies focus mainly on pollinators and arthropods; they do not establish a universal effect on wildlife as a whole or a reliable percentage gain or loss from a single month without mowing.

Does a May pause work as well as mowing less all season?

They are different strategies. Colorado State University Extension notes that evidence often cited for No Mow May includes research on reduced mowing frequency across the growing season—not specifically stopping for May and then resuming usual lawn care.

In a Massachusetts study summarized by Colorado State, lawns mowed every two weeks had the highest bee abundance among lawns mowed weekly, every two weeks, or every three weeks. Lawns mowed every three weeks had the most flowers. Colorado State also summarizes a 2022 meta-analysis associating less frequent mowing with greater arthropod diversity and, more moderately, abundance. These findings support considering less frequent mowing over time; they do not directly establish the effect of a May-only pause in every region or lawn.

A 2020 peer-reviewed study, “No Mow May lawns have higher pollinator richness and abundances: An engaged community provides floral resources for pollinators,” reported higher pollinator richness and abundance in the community it studied. That is evidence of a possible benefit in that setting, not a guarantee for every lawn or plant community. Colorado State Extension says the campaign gained popularity from a study that was later retracted; that does not mean all research supporting reduced mowing was retracted.

Which approach fits your lawn and goals?

Approach What it may offer What to weigh
Pause mowing in May Existing flowers can bloom and provide forage if the lawn contains suitable plants. Fast-growing turf may become difficult to cut without removing too much at once; a turf-heavy lawn may offer little pollinator food.
Mow higher and less often Can allow more flowering plants to bloom while keeping a maintained lawn. Suitable height and frequency depend on grass type, growth, and local conditions.
Create a bee lawn or pollinator garden Provides a more intentional area of flowering habitat, with plant choices suited to the site. Requires selecting and establishing appropriate plants; converting lawn takes more planning than skipping a few cuts.
Keep conventional turf on a regular schedule Maintains a conventional lawn appearance and avoids a tall catch-up cut. Turf alone generally provides little to no pollinator resource; consider adding a flowering area if habitat is a goal.

Appearance, neighborhood rules, lawn-management history, pesticide use, nesting areas, and willingness to accept flowers all affect the choice. Iowa State University Extension’s May 2026 guidance lists management difficulty after May, limited native floral resources in an unmown lawn, and aesthetic objections among possible drawbacks. It suggests mowing every other week, making a pollinator garden, or replacing some lawn with garden or bee-lawn space.

How to reduce mowing without stressing turf

  1. Check what is growing. Identify the flowering plants in the lawn and consider whether they are desirable and appropriate locally. The potential forage benefit depends on the plants that actually bloom.
  2. Choose a manageable cutting height. Wisconsin Extension says higher-than-3-inch mowing and less frequent cuts tend to result in more flowering plants. Colorado State Extension gives about 3.5 to 4 inches as an example and advises mowing before more than one-third of the blade height would be removed. Treat these as guidance to adapt to your grass and local conditions, not as a universal setting.
  3. Adjust frequency to growth. Let the lawn grow between cuts, but mow before a single cut would remove more than one-third of the grass height. If it has already become too tall, bring it down in stages.
  4. Deal with heavy clipping clumps. Clear mats that cover the grass, particularly after a lush catch-up cut.
  5. Consider fertilizer and treatment history. Lush, regularly fertilized turf may grow too much for a comfortable one-month pause. Maine Extension’s timing and height recommendations are specific advice for its context, not a universal prescription.

How to make a more reliable wildlife-friendly space

If habitat is the main goal, make a designated area for flowering plants rather than relying on any vegetation that happens to grow in turf. A bee lawn, pollinator garden, or planted no-mow area can be selected for suitable flowers and a longer period of bloom. Wisconsin Extension describes bee lawns as low-input lawns intentionally planted and managed with flowers; Iowa State also recommends gardens or converting some lawn area.

Choose plants suited to your region and site, reduce unnecessary pesticide applications, and preserve nesting habitat where feasible. Minnesota Turfgrass Science lists bee-lawn seed vendors but explicitly does not endorse them; availability can change, so check local suitability and current stock rather than treating a vendor list as a recommendation.

For a conventional lawn, higher and less frequent mowing is a practical middle ground. For pollinator habitat, a planted area is more deliberate than leaving an unspecified patch unmown for one month. Neither choice is universally right: the result depends on what grows there, how quickly the grass grows, and what you want the space to do.
