The Empire State Building’s top mast was designed to moor airships and transfer passengers into the skyscraper—but it never became a working airship terminal. The idea was real, and contemporary accounts record engineering requirements for it; the challenge was making a safe, repeatable transfer at a windy, exposed rooftop.
What the mast was designed to do
In late 1929, investor-group leader Alfred E. Smith announced that the proposed building would rise roughly 200 feet higher, with a mast at the top intended as a mooring point for zeppelins. The concept was to bring passengers into the heart of New York by air, then send them down through the building.
The planned route involved leaving the airship by a gangplank or reaching an upper embarkation point, then taking an elevator down. The Metropolitan Museum describes a gangplank and private elevator to street level; the Skyscraper Museum refers to an upper embarkation room. These were elements of the proposal, not a passenger service that was put into operation.
What the contemporary design account specified
A February 1931 account in Architectural Forum, written by Irwin Clavan from the architects’ office, shows the mooring proposal received serious engineering attention. It said the mast was to extend at least 200 feet above the roof and withstand a horizontal pull of 50 tons at its head. The account also noted that experts and public and private agencies had been consulted. Those figures describe design requirements, not a later test or proof of successful airship operations.

Why an airship terminal at the summit was impractical
The promotional appeal was easy to picture: arrive by air above the city and descend directly into a landmark building. The operating conditions were much less convenient. Gusty winds at the pinnacle made it difficult to control and hold a large airship beside the tower long enough for passengers to transfer. The Metropolitan Museum describes the wind as making the plan impossible to execute; the National Air and Space Museum characterizes the scenario as a logistical and safety impossibility.
A mooring point alone could not solve the problem. A useful terminal would have required crews to approach, secure and transfer passengers safely and consistently in an exposed location. The proposal did not develop into regular passenger service.

Did an airship ever dock at the Empire State Building?
The answer depends on what “docked” means. The Metropolitan Museum says no airship ever docked there, while Smithsonian Magazine describes a brief 1931 episode as a docking. The available accounts do not establish whether the event involved an approach, momentary contact, tethering or a completed passenger transfer. The clearest conclusion is that the mast never operated as a passenger terminal; reports differ on whether to call the brief 1931 contact a docking.
The famous USS Los Angeles image
A widely reproduced 1930 wire photograph appears to show the Navy dirigible USS Los Angeles at the mast. The Metropolitan Museum identifies the scene as a false depiction: the airship did not dock there as shown. The image is not evidence of a successful arrival or passenger transfer.

A striking design feature, not a functioning terminal
The mast joined an ambitious architectural silhouette to an equally ambitious transportation idea. Its intended role was more than a later legend, as the contemporary specifications show, but the practical demands of controlling an airship beside a skyscraper prevented the vision from becoming an operating terminal.
