Check those issues first. Replace the door gasket only if it is actually damaged or the gap remains after basic checks, and choose a part matched to the refrigerator’s exact model.
Check what may be keeping the door from closing
Before assuming the door seal has failed, inspect the full door opening. A container, food package, wrapper, or misplaced shelf, bin, or drawer can hold the door slightly open. Move items away from the edge, remove anything caught in the gap, and make sure interior parts are seated correctly. LG and Frigidaire list obstructions and incorrectly positioned interior parts among causes of a door that will not close properly.
Close the door and look for a visible gap around its perimeter. If the obstruction is gone but the gap remains, continue with the gasket and alignment checks.
Clean and reseat the door gasket
Clean off dirt and sticky residue
Wipe the entire gasket—the flexible strip around the door—with a clean, warm, damp towel. Pay attention to folds where crumbs or residue can collect, then dry the gasket with a towel. LG advises repeating the wipe two or three times and keeping the door closed for at least two hours afterward. Press a loose section back into place
If part of the gasket has come out of its groove, align it with the channel and press it back in evenly. Run your hand along the edge to check that it sits consistently rather than bulging or pulling away. If it will not stay seated, or the gap continues, move on to checking the door and appliance alignment.
Check the refrigerator’s level and door alignment
Make sure the refrigerator stands on a firm, level floor and that its front feet or leveling adjustments are set as directed in the owner’s manual. An appliance that is not properly leveled can affect how the door sits and closes. If the door was removed during a move or repair, it may not have been reinstalled or aligned correctly; use the model’s instructions rather than forcing the door into position. Tell a normal corner seam from actual damage
A line or join at a gasket corner is not necessarily a tear. LG notes that corner joins can be normal manufacturing seams; damage elsewhere on the gasket is a reason to seek technician review. Consider replacement if you find real damage or the door still does not seal after clearing obstructions, cleaning and reseating the gasket, and checking alignment. Gaskets are not universal: match the replacement to the refrigerator’s exact model and door style, and use the manufacturer’s instructions for that design. GE Appliances directs owners to style-specific gasket adjustment or replacement information, while Electrolux notes that changing a cooling-appliance door seal requires basic DIY competency.

- Find the refrigerator’s model number and confirm that the gasket is listed as compatible with it.
- Check that the gasket profile and door style match; do not assume a part for another model or brand will fit.
- Read the model-specific replacement instructions before removing the old gasket. If the work is beyond your comfort level, arrange service.
Start with GE Appliances’ style-specific gasket information or Electrolux’s door-seal replacement guidance as applicable to your appliance. Some replacement gaskets may arrive creased; follow the manufacturer’s instructions for preparing and installing the part rather than applying an improvised fix.
Use frost or moisture as clues, not a diagnosis
Frost buildup, moisture, temperature fluctuation, door misalignment, or a switch that does not actuate properly can occur alongside sealing problems. None of these symptoms alone proves that the gasket is the cause. Whirlpool’s troubleshooting guidance includes these as checks and symptoms; if the door appears to close but the refrigerator still has operating problems, investigate the model’s other troubleshooting steps or contact service instead of replacing the gasket on symptoms alone.
