How to Clean a Couch, From Fabric to Leather

The safest way to clean a couch is to identify its upholstery-care code first, vacuum with soft tools, blot spills instead of rubbing, and use the least moisture or solvent the manufacturer permits. Water-based fabric, solvent-only fabric, finished leather, and unfinished leathers require different methods; using the wrong one can leave rings, spread stains, strip color, or permanently damage the cover.

Start with the care tag

Look under a removable cushion or along the sofa frame for the manufacturer’s tag. The maker’s directions take priority over general code definitions.

Code What it permits DIY approach
W Water-based cleaning Use a small amount of upholstery shampoo, foam, or another labeled water-based product. Pretest and blot; never saturate.
S Water-free solvent only Use only a labeled dry-cleaning upholstery solvent. Keep water away and follow the product label; some manufacturers require seam-to-seam panel cleaning to prevent visible edges.
SW or WS Specified water-based or solvent products Choose chemistry suited to the stain, pretest, and use minimal product. “Permits” does not mean both methods are risk-free on every dye or finish.
X Vacuuming or light brushing only Do not use water, foam, steam, or solvent. Arrange professional care if the entire piece is soiled.

Remove cushions and vacuum crumbs, hair, and dust from seams before applying any liquid or solvent. Use a crevice tool or soft upholstery attachment; a hard nozzle can abrade fibers.

How to clean fabric upholstery

1. Prepare and pretest

  1. Read the care tag and the cleaner’s label.
  2. Vacuum the entire couch, including under cushions and around piping.
  3. Test the product on a hidden area and let it dry completely. Check for color transfer, fading, texture change, or a water ring before proceeding.
  4. Work in good ventilation and protect nearby wood or metal from cleaner.

2. Clean a W-coded couch

Apply upholstery shampoo or foam sparingly to a cloth or the surface as the product directs. Work in small sections, using gentle strokes rather than aggressive scrubbing. Blot with clean, absorbent towels and change towels as they become damp or dirty. Keep the fabric only lightly damp; padding that stays wet can develop odor, mildew, or distortion. Do not use steam or hot-water extraction if the sofa maker disallows it.

3. Clean an S-coded couch

Use only a water-free upholstery dry-cleaning solvent approved for the fabric. Do not add water, mist the fabric, or attempt to “rinse” the solvent. Pretest for dye bleeding and ventilation requirements. Follow the label’s instructions about application, dwell time, and removal; if it calls for cleaning a whole panel, do not treat only the middle of a visibly soiled cushion.

4. Clean an SW/WS-coded couch

You may be able to use an upholstery shampoo, mild-detergent foam, or suitable furniture solvent, but match the product to the stain and the label. Use the smallest practical amount, pretest each product, and avoid mixing water and solvent systems. If the fabric’s dye, backing, or construction is uncertain, a professional is safer than trial and error.

5. Treat an X-coded couch

Vacuum slowly with a soft attachment or use a non-metallic soft brush. Do not apply spot remover, detergent, solvent, steam, or water. A professional upholstery cleaner should assess overall soiling and identify a method compatible with the fabric.

How to remove a spill without a water ring

  1. Act immediately. Lift solids with a spoon or dull edge and blot liquid with white, absorbent towels.
  2. Work from the outside of the spill toward the center so the wet area does not expand.
  3. Use only a product permitted by the code, and apply it to the cloth when the label allows. Do not pour cleaner directly onto the cushion.
  4. Feather the treatment slightly into the surrounding area rather than leaving a sharply wet circle.
  5. Blot repeatedly with dry towels. Do not rub, twist, or press so hard that liquid is driven into the padding.
  6. Allow slow, even air-drying away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not sit on or replace a cushion until it is fully dry.

Rings usually result when moisture or dissolved soil dries unevenly, so flooding one small spot is risky. If the spill has soaked the cushion, odor remains, or the fabric changes color, stop adding product and call an upholstery specialist.

Can you steam-clean a sofa?

Only when the sofa manufacturer and care label permit steam or hot-water extraction. Steam introduces heat and substantial moisture; on a fabric that forbids it, the result can be shrinkage, dye bleeding, backing separation, water marks, or damp padding. Code X furniture must not be steam-cleaned, and an S-coded sofa must not be exposed to water. When steam is permitted, pretest first, use the equipment’s upholstery setting, make slow passes, extract as much moisture as possible, and ventilate until completely dry.

How to clean a finished-leather couch

Routine dust removal

  1. Remove cushions and vacuum seams with a crevice or soft dusting attachment.
  2. Never use a rotating brush roll on leather.
  3. Wipe surface dust and body oils with a clean, dry microfiber or lint-free cloth.

Compatible cleaner and conditioner

  1. Confirm that the upholstery is finished leather and that the maker permits a leather cleaner.
  2. Choose a compatible, pH-balanced leather cleaner. Apply it to a soft cloth, not directly to the sofa.
  3. Work in small sections with light pressure.
  4. Wipe away residue with a dry cloth and air-dry away from direct sun, radiators, and other heat.
  5. Use a furniture-leather conditioner only if the manufacturer says it is compatible. Patch-test first, apply sparingly, and buff away excess.

Fresh food, drink, grease, or pet spills

Blot immediately from the outside inward with a clean cloth. Do not rub, spread the spill, or force it into seams. Grease and dyes that remain after gentle blotting are best handled by a leather specialist rather than stronger household chemicals.

Aniline, semi-aniline, suede, and nubuck

Aniline and semi-aniline leathers have little or no protective surface coating, making them more vulnerable to moisture, staining, and fading than finished leather. Suede and nubuck are especially sensitive to wet cleaning. Vacuum these materials gently; anything beyond vacuuming should be handled by a professional familiar with that specific leather type. Do not transfer the finished-leather cleaner or conditioner routine to unfinished leather.

Products and tools to avoid on leather

  • Bleach, ammonia, alcohol-based cleaners, and all-purpose household sprays
  • Furniture polish, saddle soap, oils, varnishes, soaps, and dusting agents
  • Abrasive pads, stiff brushes, and rotating brush rolls
  • Excess water, steam, and any cleaner not approved for the leather finish

These products can strip a protective coating, discolor the hide, scratch it, or leave it stiff, warped, or marked.

How often should a leather sofa be cleaned and conditioned?

A practical routine published by BISSELL is weekly dusting or vacuuming, a more thorough clean every two to three months, and conditioning every six to 12 months. Use the shorter interval when the sofa is in strong sunlight, a dry environment, or a high-traffic room. These are maintenance intervals, not a guarantee for every leather finish; the manufacturer’s care instructions control.

When to hire a professional

Contact an upholstery or leather specialist when overall soiling needs deep cleaning, a stain remains after one careful permitted treatment, or the material is damaged or difficult to identify. An IICRC Certified Firm that specializes in upholstery is an appropriate choice for whole-sofa cleaning. Escalate rather than experiment when you see mold, cracking, peeling, severe dye transfer, soaked padding, code-X fabric, or unfinished, aniline, semi-aniline, suede, or nubuck leather.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does WS mean on a couch tag?

WS (also written SW) means the manufacturer permits specified water-based or water-free solvent products. Pretest the chosen product and never saturate the upholstery.

What should I do if I cannot find a care code?

Treat the material as unknown: vacuum only, avoid water and solvent, and ask the manufacturer or a qualified upholstery professional to identify a safe method.
