How to Avoid Tear-Out When Routing Wood

A practical method for clean router cuts: inspect grain, feed safely, route end-grain edges first, support exits with scrap, and build profiles through light passes.

The reliable way to prevent router tear-out is to control the grain and the exit. Inspect the board, route in the correct feed direction, use a sharp cutter and light passes, cut end-grain edges first, and support any edge where the bit will exit. Test an uncertain grain direction on matching scrap before routing the finished part.

Why router tear-out happens

Tear-out is splintering that occurs when the cutter lifts or breaks fibers instead of slicing them cleanly. It is especially common where a bit exits end grain: the trailing fibers have little support. An edge-grain cut can also tear when the router travels against the grain. Grain direction may change along one board, so do not assume that one feed direction is safe for every edge.

Fine Woodworking’s Gina Eide identified routing end grain and routing edge grain against the grain as common tear-out conditions in “How to avoid router tearout” (June 2, 2011). Examine the actual board and make a shallow test cut in a matching offcut whenever the grain is difficult to read.

Prepare the router and workpiece

  • Use a sharp, clean bit. A dull or resin-coated cutter needs more force and is more likely to crush fibers.
  • Secure the work. Clamp the board firmly so it cannot shift as the cutter engages or exits.
  • Plan the complete route. Mark the start and finish of each edge, identify end grain, and decide where a later pass can remove any breakout.
  • Practice on scrap. Use the same species, thickness and grain orientation when possible; a test on a different board may give misleading results.

WOOD Magazine’s “How do I avoid tearout when milling wood?” (September 21, 2018) summarizes the basic controls as sharp cutters, light cuts, slow and steady feed, and sacrificial material at end-grain exits.

Choose the safe feed direction

For normal handheld routing, move the router so the bit’s rotation pulls the tool into the workpiece or fence rather than away from it. Follow the feed diagram in the manual for your exact router and setup. The correct direction gives you predictable resistance and control.

Do not make climb-cutting your routine solution. In a climb cut, the router travels with the cutter’s rotation. Woodcraft’s Handheld Routing guide warns: “Feeding in the opposite direction (called climb-cutting) causes the bit to push the router away from the edge or fence, resulting in an erratic cut.” A climb cut can self-feed, grab the work, or push the router away from the fence. If a manufacturer-approved climb cut is appropriate for a tiny localized cleanup, clamp the work securely, remove only a slight amount, and follow the router maker’s instructions. SKIL’s RT1323 manual likewise cautions users to plan feed direction to reduce kickback and to treat climb cutting as hazardous.

Route edges in an order that removes breakout

For a profile on all four edges

  1. Route the first end-grain edge.
  2. Route the opposite end-grain edge.
  3. Route the two long-grain edges last.

The long-grain passes then remove the small amount of breakout that may occur where the bit left an end-grain edge. This sequence is recommended in Woodcraft’s guide and in WOOD Magazine’s tear-out guidance.

When the adjacent edge will remain untouched

Clamp a straight scrap offcut tightly against the exit edge and route slightly into that sacrificial backer. The backer supports the fibers as the cutter leaves the work, so the visible board edge is less likely to chip. Woodsmith’s “5 Tips For Taming Router Table Tearout” (June 13, 2019; republished in an August 4, 2022 newsletter) and Woodworkers Journal both describe scrap backing as a practical way to support end-grain exits.

Control how much wood each pass removes

Take several modest passes instead of trying to cut a deep profile in one pass. For grooves, dados, mortises and large edge profiles, increase depth progressively and leave a very light finishing pass. Smaller bites reduce the force on the fibers and make it easier to keep the router steady.

Feed at a controlled, even rate. Pushing too quickly can leave an incomplete cut; forcing the router slowly while the bit is overloaded can burn the wood and worsen breakout. Let a sharp cutter do the work, and use the same steady motion through the supported and unsupported portions of the edge.

Consider a slicing cutter for difficult end grain

A straight bit cuts primarily with a chopping action. A spiral or angled/shear-cutting bit presents the edge progressively, producing more of a slicing action that can improve results in fragile or difficult end grain. It is an option, not a prerequisite: correct grain planning, support, sharpness and light passes should come first. Woodworkers Journal discusses spiral and shearing geometries as alternatives for reducing chips and blowout.

Situation First choice Why
A later edge will cover the exit Route the end-grain edge first, then the long-grain cleanup edge The later pass removes minor breakout
The exit edge stays visible Clamp a matching scrap backer at the exit The backer supports the fibers
Large profile or deep cut Use successive shallow passes and a light finish pass Less force and better control
Fragile, short-grain or difficult end grain Consider a spiral or shear-cutting bit The slicing geometry may reduce chipping
Temptation to climb-cut Stay with the normal feed unless the manual specifically permits a controlled exception Climb cutting can grab and become erratic

If tear-out still appears

It occurs only at the exit

Add a tightly clamped sacrificial backer and repeat the final shallow pass. If the design permits, change the routing order so another edge cleans up the exit.

It runs along a long edge

Stop and inspect the grain direction. The router may be traveling against the grain, or the grain may have changed direction. Reverse the workpiece or alter the approach so the cutter enters supporting fibers, then verify the change on scrap.

The entire cut is ragged

Inspect the bit for dullness, resin or incorrect installation. Reduce the depth per pass, secure the work more firmly and maintain a steady feed. A damaged or poorly seated cutter should be replaced before further routing.

The router grabs or pulls away

Stop the cut. This is a control problem, not a finish problem. Recheck the normal feed direction, clamp the work and fence, and consult the router manual before attempting any nonstandard feed.
