For a U.S. homeowner hiring a professional, changing a house lock typically costs about $60–$350 per lock, according to Angi’s 2026 replacement guide; Angi reports an average of $150 per lock. The total depends on whether you rekey the existing lock or install new hardware, plus the lock type, labor, door work and timing. Those are guide estimates, not a guaranteed installed price.

What a professional lock change costs

“Changing” a lock can mean either rekeying existing hardware so old keys no longer work, or replacing the lock itself. The estimates below cover different scopes, so compare like with like.

Service Published estimate What it covers
Lock replacement $60–$350 per lock; $150 average Angi’s 2026 guide estimate for replacement. The total varies by lock, features and labor. Angi replacement guide
Rekeying $50–$130 per lock Angi’s 2026 locksmith-cost guide. A separate Angi comparison page estimates $50–$100, reflecting a different page and service scope. Angi locksmith cost guide and Angi rekey-versus-replace guide
New lock installation $100–$300 Angi’s 2026 locksmith guide service estimate; it is separate from the retail cost of hardware. Angi locksmith cost guide
Deadbolt replacement $40–$120 Angi’s 2026 replacement guide breakdown by lock type. Angi replacement guide
Locksmith labor $50–$250 HomeAdvisor’s 2026 guide gives this labor range for changing house locks; lock hardware is additional. HomeAdvisor lock-change cost guide

Angi also reports an average locksmith-service cost of $164 in 2026, based on 16,505 verified projects reported by Angi Pros. That figure is for locksmith service overall, not the cost of replacing one lock. HomeAdvisor says its 2026 cost data draws on more than 10,000 customer surveys; that describes its overall methodology, not a lock-change-specific sample.

Rekeying or replacing: which do you need?

Choose rekeying if the hardware works and you only need new keys

Rekeying changes the pins or tumblers inside a compatible lock so that a different key operates it. It can suit situations such as moving into a home, losing a key or changing who has access, provided the existing lock is in good condition. If you want several locks to work with one key, they generally need to be the same brand or have compatible keyways.

  • Backed by an Amazon Basics 1-year limited warranty

Choose replacement if the lock or your requirements have changed

A worn, damaged, compromised or door-incompatible lock may need replacement rather than rekeying. Replacement also makes sense when you want a different type or feature set, such as moving from a basic lock to a smart or high-security model. Ask the locksmith to explain whether the existing hardware can be rekeyed before agreeing to replace it.

What can raise or lower the total?

  • Number and type of locks: More locks usually mean a higher bill, although providers may offer bundled pricing. Standard knobs and deadbolts generally cost less than mortise, high-security, keypad or smart locks.
  • Labor and service-call charges: Quotes may use a per-lock labor charge, hourly rate or minimum service fee. Clarify whether the visit and travel are included.
  • Door or frame work: Retrofitting an older door, drilling new holes or modifying the frame can add labor and materials.
  • Timing: Emergency, weekend, holiday or after-hours calls may have a surcharge. Angi’s 2026 locksmith guide estimates an additional $50–$150 for emergency or after-hours service; the actual surcharge is provider-specific. Angi locksmith cost guide
  • Features and setup: Smart-lock programming, high-security parts, keyed-alike or master-key arrangements, and upgraded strike plates can affect the price.

DIY replacement versus hiring a locksmith

For a straightforward, compatible doorknob or deadbolt replacement, Angi estimates basic DIY materials at $20–$80. That is a materials estimate, not a professional installed price. Check that the new hardware fits the door, and consider whether rekeying your existing lock would meet your needs before buying a replacement.

  • Locks purchased separately will be keyed different. Includes 3 keys per set
  • Safety & Durability: Lockable on both sides; stainless steel handle with reinforced steel structure and anti-collision cylinder for long-lasting security

A locksmith is a better fit when the system is complex, high-security, smart or multipoint, or when the door or frame needs modification. Professional estimates may include labor and travel, so they should not be compared directly with hardware-only DIY costs.
