You also need the current in amps; for some AC loads, you need the power factor as well. For a simple DC or resistive load, use watts = volts × amps.
How to calculate watts at 220 volts
Multiply voltage by current: W = V × A. Electrical Safety First states the relationship as “Amps x Volts = Watts.” Electrical Safety First’s calculator and guidance covers the basic formula.
| Current | Calculation at 220 V | Power |
|---|---|---|
| 1 A | 220 V × 1 A | 220 W |
| 2 A | 220 V × 2 A | 440 W |
| 5 A | 220 V × 5 A | 1,100 W |
These are formula examples, not measured consumption figures for any particular appliance. If you know only that a supply is 220 V, there is no single wattage to calculate.
For AC, power factor can change the result
In an AC circuit, voltage multiplied by current gives apparent power in volt-amperes (VA). Real power in watts also depends on the load’s power factor: W = V × A × power factor. Fluke defines AC effective power using voltage, current and power factor. Fluke’s electrical glossary explains the distinction.

#1 Best Overall
- EXTENSIVE VOLTAGE TESTING: Test AC voltages from 24V to 240V and DC voltages from 32V to 330V across four levels, providing comprehensive electrical testing capabilities
- CLEAR VOLTAGE INDICATION: Bright LEDs illuminate, providing clear indication of voltage type and level, ensuring accurate measurements every time
- BUILT-IN TEST LEAD HOLDERS: Conveniently built-in test lead holders on the back of the meter spaced for testing tamper-resistant US-style outlets and easy storage
- BATTERY-FREE OPERATION: Powered directly by the applied voltage, eliminating the need for batteries and ensuring continuous testing without interruption
- ENHANCED DURABILITY: IP44 ingress protection and 9.8-Foot (3m) drop protection to meet jobsite demands
For a resistive load, or one with a power factor close to 1, watts are approximately volts multiplied by amps. Motors and some electronic loads can have a lower power factor, so multiplying volts by amps alone may overstate real power.
How to use an appliance rating label
- Find the rating plate or label. Look for the appliance’s voltage, current (A) or power (W) rating.
- If the label lists watts, use that listed power rating, noting whether it is a maximum or operating figure if the label specifies.
- If it lists amps, multiply the current by the appliance’s operating voltage for a basic estimate. For AC equipment, account for power factor if it is given or otherwise relevant.
- Check actual use separately when needed. A nameplate rating is not necessarily the appliance’s typical power draw. The U.S. Department of Energy says electricians use nameplate loads in load calculations, while actual load is often significantly lower. DOE’s 2024 home electrification factsheet provides that context. A separate DOE technical guide says nameplate ratings may be two to four times actual use; that is a general observation in that guide, not a rule for every appliance. DOE’s Federal Technology Alert: Photovoltaics discusses the distinction.
A multimeter can measure electrical quantities, but it is not needed if the label supplies the values required for a calculation. Do not probe live mains circuits unless you are qualified to do so; Fluke describes the relevant units and measurement instruments in its electrical measurements guide.

What the calculation does not tell you about safety
A wattage estimate does not establish that an outlet, circuit, extension lead or adaptor can safely supply the appliance. Electrical Safety First warns that high-wattage items on low-amp extension leads can generate dangerous heat and recommends professional advice for home electrical projects. Read its electrical safety guidance before relying on an extension lead.
For travel, check the appliance’s voltage rating and the adaptor’s maximum power rating. Electrical Safety First advises checking ratings because a plug-shape converter alone does not confirm that an appliance is electrically compatible. Its travel-adaptor advice explains the checks.

Check the supply and ratings, not just the number 220
Do not assume 220 V is a universal mains standard. Electrical supplies and equipment configurations vary by location. When comparing an appliance with a supply, check the marked voltage range, current or wattage rating, AC frequency where specified, and the ratings of the relevant plug, adaptor and circuit.
