Dyson Farming grows strawberries on slowly rotating vertical structures inside a glasshouse at Carrington, Lincolnshire. The plants receive natural daylight, supplemented by LEDs when needed; the setup is a hybrid vertical growing system, not a fully indoor warehouse farm. Dyson says a trial of the system increased yields by 2.5 times, though its published account does not provide the comparison baseline or an independently verified trial design.
How does Dyson grow strawberries vertically?
Dyson Farming’s Hybrid Vertical Growing System (HVGS) uses tall, Ferris-wheel-like structures to carry trays of strawberry plants. Dyson says the structures are 5.5 metres high and turn slowly, moving plants so they receive sunlight through the day. LEDs supplement natural light when daylight is low. Irrigation and drainage are designed to support root health. The structures were designed and built by Dyson, rather than being an off-the-shelf consumer growing kit. Dyson’s strawberry overview and its account of the system and trial describe the equipment.
The idea is to use the glasshouse’s height as well as its floor area. Rotating the plants is intended to give them access to natural light, while supplemental LEDs help when sunlight is insufficient. That makes the installation vertical growing under glass—not a sealed indoor farm that relies only on artificial lighting.
How does Dyson’s strawberry farm work?
Glasshouse scale and production
The Carrington glasshouse in Lincolnshire covers 26 acres. Dyson Farming says it was built in two phases, completed in 2021 and 2023. The company’s June 2026 overview reports 1.25 million plants and annual output of 1,250 tonnes. Those are current company-reported figures, not independently audited production data. Dyson’s June 2026 farming overview and its food and farming page give the facility context.

The scale has changed since the first crop: in a retrospective published on 5 August 2021, Dyson Farming described a 15-acre glasshouse and a first harvest of 470 tonnes over five months. That early figure belongs to the initial crop and facility context; it should not be read as the current annual output. Dyson Farming’s first-crop retrospective reports those details.
Robots, sensors and crop care
Dyson says vision-sensing harvest robots identify ripe berries and use robotic secateurs to pick them. The company also describes night-time UV robots intended to reduce mould, insect predators to control aphids, and sensors and AI-powered decision-support software for glasshouse operations. These are descriptions from the company; the cited material does not independently assess their reliability, labour savings or effect on pesticide use. Dyson’s current strawberry page and its technology account describe the methods.

Does Dyson really grow strawberries all year round?
Dyson describes the Carrington operation as producing strawberries throughout the year, with natural light supplemented by LEDs and a controlled glasshouse environment. That describes the company’s production approach; the available figures do not provide a month-by-month harvest schedule or establish that every variety or retail outlet has uninterrupted availability. Check the retailer’s current listing for stock.
How much has Dyson increased strawberry yields?
Dyson reports that its completed Hybrid Vertical Growing System trial increased yields by 2.5 times—also described as 250%. James Dyson said: “We always want to improve the efficiency of what we do, and our novel Hybrid Vertical Growing System, has shown that it can increase yields by two and a half times.” The company account does not state the comparison baseline or provide an independently verified trial protocol, so the result should be treated as Dyson’s reported trial outcome rather than a general yield guarantee. Dyson’s trial announcement provides the result.

The available material also does not establish energy use per kilogram, cost per kilogram, or a lifecycle greenhouse-gas comparison. Dyson says an anaerobic digester beside the glasshouse supplies electricity, surplus heat and carbon dioxide, while digestate is returned to fields as fertiliser. This is the company’s account of a linked energy and nutrient system, not a quantified independent finding that the strawberries have a lower carbon footprint. A North Lincolnshire planning impact document provides project context but does not validate Dyson’s trial yield claim. The January 2024 planning document is not an independent performance assessment.
