How and When to Cut Back Ornamental Grasses

For most deciduous ornamental grasses, leave the dried foliage and seed heads standing over winter, then cut them back in late winter or early spring before new shoots emerge. The right moment depends on the plant and your local climate—not one calendar date for every garden. Evergreen grasses usually need selective grooming rather than a hard cutback.

When should you cut ornamental grasses back?

Use the plant’s growth stage as your cue: cut back deciduous grasses after winter but before fresh growth starts. Leaving old foliage in place can preserve winter interest and help protect the crown from frost, as noted by UC Agriculture and Natural Resources. Cut earlier if dry foliage creates a fire concern or conflicts with local site requirements; Colorado State University Extension notes that dried grass can be combustible in winter (Colorado State Extension).

Published month recommendations are regional examples, not interchangeable dates. Iowa State University Extension recommends April for Iowa (Iowa State Extension). The University of Florida IFAS gives February and March for north and central Florida, and January or February for south Florida (UF/IFAS). In your own garden, prioritize whether new shoots have begun to appear.

Check what kind of grass you have

Deciduous grasses

Many warm-season grasses become dormant and brown in cold weather, then resume growing as conditions warm. Once winter is passing and before new shoots emerge, remove the old foliage in a single cutback. Japanese silver grass is one example of a deciduous grass that can be cut close to the soil before spring growth (UF/IFAS).

Evergreen and cool-season grasses

Cool-season grasses can begin growing while temperatures are still mild and may remain evergreen. Do not automatically shear these plants to the ground. Remove dead leaves and old flower stalks selectively; UF/IFAS cautions that severe pruning before winter dormancy can cause losses and reduced vigor. Some sedges and sweet flag also recover poorly from a full cutback, so comb out dead leaves by hand instead (UF/IFAS; Clemson Cooperative Extension).

How far down should you cut?

For a deciduous clump, cut the old stems to a few inches above the ground, leaving enough room to avoid damaging emerging shoots. Recommendations differ by location and grass type: Iowa State Extension advises 2 to 4 inches in Iowa, while Illinois Extension gives 4 to 6 inches for warm-season grasses (Iowa State Extension; Illinois Extension). These are practical examples, not a universal cutting height.

Choose tools and cut safely

Match the tool to the clump’s size and density. Hand pruners or shears are useful for small plants; lopping shears, hedge shears or a powered trimmer can handle larger or denser foliage. Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Clemson Extension list these types of tools for grass maintenance (Iowa State Extension; Oklahoma State Extension; Clemson Cooperative Extension).

  • Wear gloves and long sleeves: some grass leaves have sharp or serrated edges.
  • Gather the foliage before cutting if that makes the stems easier to control.
  • Keep the cut above new shoots; if growth has already started, work carefully around it rather than making a low, indiscriminate cut.

What if the center of the clump is thinning?

A thinning or dead center may signal that the clump needs division; trimming the tops alone may not address the problem. Iowa State recommends division in early spring as new growth appears, while Clemson Extension varies its timing according to whether the grass is warm- or cool-season. Check the plant’s type before dividing (Iowa State Extension; Clemson Cooperative Extension).
