Grow most lacecap hydrangeas in morning or filtered light, moist but well-drained soil, and a spot protected from hot afternoon sun. Prune bigleaf lacecaps lightly just after flowering: most set next year’s flower buds on last year’s stems, so late-season or winter pruning can cost you a season of blooms.

What is a lacecap hydrangea?

“Lacecap” describes the shape of the flower cluster, not a single species. A typical lacecap has a flat or saucer-shaped head, with small flowers in the center and larger, showier flowers around the edge. The outer flowers are sterile; the central flowers are fertile. The common name most often refers to lacecap cultivars of bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla), but other hydrangeas, including Hydrangea serrata, can have similar flower heads.

Check the plant label before relying on care advice for bigleaf hydrangea. H. serrata is generally smaller and more compact, and may need little pruning after flowering. A flat flower head alone does not identify the species or cultivar.

Choose a cultivar and planting site

Start with the plant label

Compare mature dimensions, local hardiness, flower color and form, and whether the cultivar can rebloom on new growth. These traits vary among cultivars, so use the plant tag or local extension guidance rather than assuming every lacecap will reach the same size or behave alike. Virginia Cooperative Extension lists ‘Coerulea Lace’ as a pink-to-blue lacecap and ‘Lanarth White’ as a white lacecap; it also notes variation in plant size, foliage, flowers, and stem strength. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s bigleaf hydrangea guide has additional cultivar information.

American Beauties Native Plants - Hydrangea arb. 'Haas' Halo' (Smooth Hydrangea) Shrub, white lacecap flowers, #3 - Size Container
  • For best results, plant in USDA Zone:3-9 - Mature size: 3-5ft H x 3-5ft W
  • Plant is delivered in a #3 Size Container. It is fully rooted in the soil and can be planted immediately upon arrival, weather permitting.
  • Beautiful, large blue-green foliage serves as the backdrop for masses of small, summer blooming white flowers that bloom at stem ends and group into huge flattened flower heads. These flower heads consist of big, sterile flowers on the outside surrounding masses of smaller fertile flowers that native pollinators flock to!
  • Easy to grow. Outstanding for a foundation planting or for grouping to form a pollinator friendly border planting. Long summer blooming. Thrives in sun or shade.
  • Attracts butterflies, hummingbirds. Native songbirds nest in this plant and the dried flowers provide nesting material. Host for the Hydrangea Sphinx Moth

Favor gentle light and shelter

Choose a spot with morning sun or dappled light and protection from intense afternoon sun, especially in a hot climate. Bigleaf hydrangeas can grow in a range from sun to shade, but too much shade may reduce flowering. Performance depends on climate and cultivar; Oregon State University describes the species as suited to sun or part shade when soil stays moist and drains well. Oregon State’s landscape profile provides species details.

Prepare soil and space

Use soil that holds moisture but does not stay waterlogged. Add organic matter where appropriate and mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and improve the soil as the mulch breaks down. Leave room for the cultivar’s mature spread: published species size estimates differ, so the label or local advice is more useful than a single size promise. A soil test can help determine pH and fertilizer needs; Washington State University Extension recommends testing before making amendments. WSU Extension’s hydrangea guidance explains soil testing and related care.

Water and feed according to conditions

Keep the root zone evenly moist, particularly while the plant is establishing and during hot, dry weather. Water deeply at the base as the soil begins to dry; a practical cue is when the top couple of inches are dry. Adjust for rainfall, temperature, soil, and whether the hydrangea is planted in the ground or a container. Avoid both repeated shallow watering and persistently saturated soil. Overhead watering may encourage disease in some conditions.

Drought stress can reduce flower buds. Deep, infrequent watering is preferable to relying on a rigid weekly schedule; Connecticut Extension’s hydrangea fact sheet discusses watering and bloom effects.

Fertilize only when growth or a soil test indicates a need. If appropriate, use a slow-release product according to its label. Excess fertilizer can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers, so more feeding is not a reliable way to get more blooms.

Prune without removing next year’s flowers

Most bigleaf lacecaps flower on old wood: stems grown during the previous season. Their flower buds form on those stems from mid-summer through fall. Pruning in summer or fall, or cutting the plant back in late winter, can remove buds before they open. Rutgers Extension explains the old-wood timing in its hydrangea garden guide.

  • IDEAL GROWTH CONDITIONS: Grows in USDA Zones 4-9 with part sun to shade and performs best with consistent moisture in well-drained soil
  • READY FOR PLANTING: Grows to approximately 2-3' tall and 2-3' wide, ideal for containers, low borders, walkways, or compact foundation beds
  1. Wait until flowering is over. For an old-wood lacecap that needs shaping, prune immediately after it flowers.
  2. Remove only what is needed. Cut out dead, damaged, or weak stems. If you need to reduce size, do so lightly rather than shearing the whole plant.
  3. Check the cultivar before pruning later. Some remontant cultivars can flower on both old and new wood, but not all lacecaps rebloom. Confirm the plant’s identity instead of assuming winter damage or late pruning will be harmless.

If dead stems are not a safety or appearance concern, North Carolina State Extension suggests cutting them to 12–24 inches and leaving them upright until they naturally disintegrate; native bees may nest in dead, hollow stems. This is an optional wildlife-conscious approach, not a requirement for plant health. See NC State Extension’s bigleaf hydrangea profile.

Can you change lacecap flowers from pink to blue?

Sometimes, if the cultivar is responsive. In many pink-or-blue bigleaf hydrangeas, more acidic soil makes aluminum more available to the plant, which can produce blue or purple hues. Less acidic or alkaline conditions tend to favor pink. The effect is indirect and varies by cultivar; white-flowered forms may not change color as expected.

Test the soil before trying to change its pH. University of Arkansas Extension gives a pH range around 5 to 5.5 for bluer flowers, while noting that cultivar response varies; it is not a guarantee of a particular color. Follow regional extension advice and product labels before applying aluminum sulfate, sulfur, or lime. The University of Arkansas guide to bigleaf hydrangea explains the pH-color relationship.

Why didn’t my lacecap hydrangea bloom?

Check pruning and growing conditions before assuming the plant is unhealthy. For a bigleaf lacecap, late pruning is a common way to remove the old-wood buds that would have flowered the following season. Other possible contributors include drought stress, too much shade, or excess fertilizer that favors foliage over flowers. Winter damage can also affect buds; a verified remontant cultivar may still produce flowers on new growth, while an old-wood-only cultivar may not.

  • Look up the cultivar and its bloom habit on the plant label.
  • Consider whether stems were cut after flowering, in late summer or fall, or during winter cleanup.
  • Check whether the plant receives enough light without harsh afternoon exposure.
  • Check soil moisture through dry weather and avoid both drought and waterlogging.
  • Use a soil test to guide pH amendments or fertilizer rather than applying products by guesswork.

Care advice differs among hydrangea species and cultivars, so identify the plant before changing pruning or soil practices.
