If you find a bed bug or credible signs of bed bugs in a hotel room, keep your luggage closed and away from the bed, alert hotel staff, and seek another place to stay. A repeatable routine—checking the room before unpacking, keeping bags off beds and floors, and handling laundry carefully when you get home—can reduce the chance of carrying bugs home. It cannot guarantee that a room is pest-free.
1. Keep your luggage out of the sleeping area while you check
At check-in, leave bags zipped in a tiled bathroom area or outside the sleeping area while you inspect. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends the bathroom as a temporary place for luggage; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends using a luggage rack rather than a bed or floor. Check the rack before setting anything on it.
2. Inspect the bed and nearby hiding places
Look over mattress seams and bedding, the bed frame and headboard, and cracks or crevices in nearby furniture. Check upholstered chairs and the luggage rack too. Bed bugs can hide in these tight spaces, not just on the mattress, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Look for live insects and signs such as reddish or dark spots, eggs, or shed skins. A small flashlight can help you see into seams, but the EPA’s travel guidance says an inspection generally does not require special tools.

3. Respond to evidence by containing your belongings and changing lodging
If you see a bed bug or convincing physical evidence—such as blood spotting on linens—tell hotel staff promptly and seek alternative lodging. The CDC Yellow Book 2026 advises travelers who observe bed bugs or signs of activity to choose another lodging option.
Keep bags zipped and avoid carrying open belongings around the room. If you need to move items, a sealable plastic bag can contain them temporarily; it does not kill bugs or make the belongings safe without further inspection or treatment.

4. Use the inspected luggage rack—not the bed or floor
Once the room has passed your inspection, use the checked luggage rack for your suitcase. Keep clothing and bags off the bed, upholstered furniture, and the floor near the bed. Close luggage when you are not using it. These habits reduce opportunities for bugs to transfer to your belongings; they are not a guarantee against exposure.
5. Do not use bites alone to decide whether a room has bed bugs
Bed bug bites can itch, but they are not a reliable room inspection. The CDC notes that bite marks can take as long as 14 days to appear in some people, and some people may not react noticeably. Base your decision on what you find in the room, not on whether you have a bite.

6. Unpack carefully when you get home
Inspect luggage seams and folds, then unpack clothes directly into your laundry workflow rather than onto a bed or bedroom floor. If practical, store the suitcase away from the bedroom and not under a bed, as the EPA advises in its home preparation guidance.
7. Use dryer heat for items that can tolerate it
Put dryer-safe clothing and similar items through a high-heat dryer cycle. The EPA says high-temperature dryer time kills bed bugs and that washing alone generally will not. Its home preparation guidance specifies 30 minutes on high heat for dryer treatment; follow care labels and do not assume every fabric or dryer cycle can safely deliver that treatment.

If you find signs of an infestation at home, consult the EPA’s bed bug guidance and consider contacting a pest management professional. Do not improvise pesticide use on luggage or clothing.
