No reliable evidence establishes Epsom salt as a way to kill a tree stump’s remaining roots. It may degrade a small portion of the cut wood, but that is different from stopping regrowth or removing the stump. For quick removal, stump grinding is the most direct option; for a stump that is sprouting, use a suitable labeled cut-stump herbicide according to its label.
Does Epsom salt kill a tree stump?
Not reliably. The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension cautions that applying Epsom salt or other stump-degrading products after cutting may degrade a small portion of the stump but will not affect the remaining roots. Its guidance discusses chokecherry, so it is not a controlled test across every tree species; it nevertheless does not support the common claim that Epsom salt kills a stump’s root system. A stump has two separate issues: the wood left above ground must decay or be removed, while the remaining trunk base and roots may continue to produce shoots. Epsom salt is not an established solution for either quick removal or reliable control of the root system. Penn State Extension also warns that Epsom salt can upset soil nutrient balance by interfering with calcium and potassium uptake. That warning comes from guidance on garden and weed-control claims, not a stump-specific trial, but it is a reason not to apply it casually around landscaping. Will Epsom salt kill the roots?
There is no established Epsom-salt dose or demonstrated method in the cited extension guidance for killing the roots left after a tree is cut. The University of Alaska Fairbanks guidance specifically distinguishes damage to some stump wood from effects on remaining roots. If shoots are coming back, address regrowth as a separate problem rather than expecting a stump-decay treatment to solve it.

How do I remove a tree stump?
Choose based on how quickly the area needs to be clear, the stump’s size, and whether you want the roots removed or simply want the stump to break down. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach describes grinding as the quickest, easiest, and safest option in its guidance; natural decay costs little but can take a long time. Can you speed up natural stump decay?
Drilling holes can expose more wood to decay processes, but it does not make the stump disappear quickly. Iowa State Extension describes drilling several holes about 1 inch wide, at least 10 inches deep, and no more than 12 inches apart, then adding slow-release fertilizer and covering the stump. Maine Extension says it could not find scientific studies establishing the effectiveness of stump “acceleration” products. University of Maine Cooperative Extension, June 21, 2023. Illinois Extension relays an estimate from University of Georgia forestry professor Kim Coder that chemical stump treatment may accelerate decay by about 25%, while improving natural-decay conditions may accelerate it by up to 50%. What if the stump is sprouting?
For regrowth, cut-stump herbicide is a different treatment from stump decay. Apply only an appropriate product to the cut surface and follow its current label for the tree, site, and location. A herbicide may prevent new growth when used appropriately, but it will not remove the stump or make the wood decompose faster. Why not burn the stump?
Burning is not a dependable shortcut. Iowa State Extension warns that stump fires can be difficult to control, may burn for days, and may be prohibited locally. Do not pour fuel or accelerants on a stump: they are dangerous, and fuel can leach into and contaminate soil. Check local fire rules and choose a removal method suited to the site instead.
