The right approach depends on the rose’s hardiness, whether it is grafted, how exposed the site is, and how severe local winters get. For vulnerable bush roses, protection usually means keeping the crown and lower canes evenly cold—not warming the plant—so repeated freezing and thawing is less likely to cause damage. If you are unsure about your cultivar or climate, ask your local extension service or a regionally knowledgeable nursery.
Why protect roses from winter conditions?
Winter covers are intended to moderate conditions around a rose’s crown and lower canes. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles can be damaging; protection helps keep the plant uniformly cold through the coldest part of winter. UNH Cooperative Extension describes keeping the crown and lower canes uniformly cold as the main goal, and Illinois Extension likewise cautions against alternate freezing and thawing.
Whether a rose needs extra protection depends on more than the thermometer. Modern roses such as many hybrid teas and floribundas can be more vulnerable in cold regions, while some old garden roses are hardier. Cultivar, rootstock and graft union, planting site, and exposure to wind all affect the decision. Use regional guidance rather than assuming a single method fits every rose.
When should you cover roses for winter?
Wait until the rose is dormant and a killing frost has finished off remaining leaves; covering too early can trap warmth and encourage growth. UNH Cooperative Extension suggests waiting through several nights in the mid-teens before protecting roses. Treat that as regional guidance, not a universal temperature rule: local weather and the rose’s condition matter.

Before covering, remove fallen leaves and diseased or damaged plant material. Keep fall pruning light. Remove dead, diseased, or broken stems, and shorten only exceptionally long canes that could whip in winter wind. Save most shaping and the main pruning for spring, when you can see what survived. Heavy pruning in fall can increase the risk of winter loss.
How to protect bush roses
For a vulnerable hybrid tea, floribunda, or similar bush rose, a soil mound around the crown is a common method. Use loose, well-drained soil or compost brought in from elsewhere; do not scrape soil from around the rose, because that can expose or injure roots. UNH’s rose guidance describes mounding about 10–12 inches around the base.

- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
- Wait for dormancy and the locally appropriate late-fall window.
- Clear fallen leaves and remove diseased or damaged material.
- If wind could whip the canes, tie them loosely together.
- Bring in loose soil or compost and mound it around the crown, without digging soil from beside the plant.
- Once the mound has frozen, add loose insulation such as leaves, straw, or evergreen boughs if that material is suitable for your region.
A collar can hold mound material in place and reduce erosion. Illinois Extension describes an 18-inch collar; a hardware-cloth rose collar or chicken-wire garden collar is optional, not required. Illinois Extension’s directions also discuss ventilated, anchored rose cones. A cone should not trap excess warmth on sunny winter days, since premature warming can encourage growth.
How to protect climbing roses
Choose a method based on the climber’s structure, site, and winter severity. In a sheltered location, wrapping canes with burlap or evergreen boughs may be sufficient. In very cold or exposed conditions, UNH describes detaching canes, carefully arching them toward the ground, pinning them, and covering them.

Do not force cold, stiff canes down: cracking can cause cane loss. If the canes resist gentle movement, stop and seek advice from a local extension service or knowledgeable rose grower. Recommendations vary by region and by how the plant is trained.
Tree roses and other special forms
A tree rose’s graft sits higher above the ground than the graft on a typical bush rose, so covering only the base may leave the most vulnerable point exposed. Washington State University Extension notes that tree roses need special care because of the elevated graft; Penn State Extension discusses burying a tree rose in some cases. These are not universal directions: use a method recommended for your region and the particular plant.

Choose a method that fits the site
| Method | Best fit | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Soil or compost mound | Vulnerable bush roses | Bring in well-drained material; do not scrape it from around the rose. Add loose insulation only after the mound freezes. |
| Collar around a mound | Bush roses where wind or erosion could displace loose material | Optional; it holds material in place but does not replace appropriate timing or insulation. |
| Ventilated rose cone | Bush roses where cones are used locally | Anchor and ventilate it so sunny winter days do not warm the plant excessively. |
| Burlap or evergreen wrapping | Some climbing roses in sheltered sites | Secure it against wind without damaging canes. |
| Detach, arch, pin, and cover | Climbing roses in very cold or exposed settings | Only bend canes that move safely; forcing stiff canes can crack them. |
Regional timing and spring removal
There is no single calendar date for adding or removing protection. In Central Oregon, Oregon State University Extension advises adding collars and bark mulch after the ground freezes and cautions against pruning too early in spring, when new growth could be caught by frost. In Iowa, Iowa State University Extension advises removing winter blankets after the ground thaws and harsh cold has passed, preferably before bud break. Penn State’s regional advice includes watering thoroughly late in the season after the first frost but before the ground freezes; follow that only where local guidance recommends it.
As spring approaches, use local weather and the plant’s condition rather than a fixed date. Remove coverings when the ground has thawed and the risk of severe winter cold has passed, while avoiding a premature start to pruning or growth in a frost-prone period.

What to do if you are unsure
- Identify the rose type and, if possible, its cultivar and rootstock.
- Consider exposure: wind, winter sun, drainage, and the severity of local cold.
- Ask your local extension service or a regionally knowledgeable nursery which method and timing fit your area.
- Do not assume a cone, mound, blanket, or climbing-rose treatment is automatically appropriate for every rose.
