Choose window-dressing hardware to suit the treatment, window, wall, and way the room is used. Measure carefully, follow the product’s installation instructions, and secure brackets to framing where possible or use fasteners suitable for the wall and hardware.
For curtains, plan the rod span around how much of the window should stay clear when the panels are open. For blinds and shades, choose an inside or outside mount based on frame depth, obstructions, and desired coverage.
How to Choose a Curtain Rod and Brackets
Match the rod’s material and finish to the room and curtains, then check that the rod and brackets suit the span and treatment. Metal, wood, and plastic rods are available, but the research does not provide controlled durability comparisons among them. Check the product’s instructions and any stated support requirements rather than assuming one type works for every window.
Rod extension affects both appearance and coverage. This Old House recommends extending a rod 2 to 5 inches beyond each side of the frame when partial side coverage is acceptable, or 8 to 15 inches per side when curtains should sit fully outside the frame. The fabric and hanging style also affect the finished position.

A center support can help prevent sagging on rods longer than four feet or made of thinner material, according to This Old House. Locate studs before positioning brackets. If a bracket cannot land on framing, choose screws and anchors appropriate to the wall, rod, and manufacturer’s instructions.
Confirm panel length and hanging style before setting rod height. Grommets, tabs, rings, and pocket sleeves position fabric differently. One This Old House designer favors full-length panels stopping about 1/4 inch above the floor to avoid touching dust and dirt; that is a preference, not a universal requirement.
Inside-Mount vs. Outside-Mount Blinds and Shades
| Mount | When it may suit | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Inside mount | For a built-in appearance when the frame has enough depth. | Frame depth, handles, and other obstructions; follow the product’s required measurements. |
| Outside mount | When you need more flexibility or want coverage beyond the opening to help reduce light gaps. | Measure the desired coverage area and confirm clearances around the window. |
Mount type depends on the window and the specific product. Do not rely on a generic measurement in place of the manufacturer’s measuring rules.

How to Measure for Shades or Blinds
Window openings may not be perfectly square. This Old House general contractor Tom Silva recommends measuring in three locations and comparing the results; differing measurements indicate that the opening is not parallel.

- Read the product’s measuring instructions first and decide whether the treatment will be inside- or outside-mounted.
- For an inside mount, measure width at the top, middle, and bottom, and use the smallest measurement. Measure length in three places and use the smallest, as directed by the cited shade guide.
- For an outside mount, measure the area you want covered. As a general guide, the shade guide suggests adding 2 to 3 inches on each side to help block light; follow the specific product’s instructions.
- Check the window frame and jambs for obstructions or bowing that could interfere with fit or operation.
Install Brackets Securely and Level

- Mark bracket positions using the product’s layout and measurement instructions.
- Check that the marks are aligned and level across the opening.
- Drill suitable pilot holes and install the supplied or otherwise appropriate fasteners for the mounting surface.
