A 1200-watt countertop microwave is not automatically the right fit for your kitchen: wattage describes cooking output, while exterior size, usable cavity, turntable, and installation clearances determine whether it works in your space. Measure the counter and your largest dishes, then compare the exact model’s specifications and manual before buying. Manufacturer examples show that 1200-watt models come in substantially different sizes, and the evidence here does not establish one universally best model.
What 1200 Watts Tells You
Wattage refers to cooking power, not the microwave’s dimensions or usable capacity. Whirlpool’s buying guide says most microwaves range from 500 to 1200 watts and that higher wattage generally cooks food more quickly; this is manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee of cooking times.
Do not assume that two 1200-watt microwaves will fit the same counter or hold the same dishes. Compare the appliance’s external dimensions, cavity, turntable, door swing, and the clearances specified for that exact model. Follow its manual for outlet and installation requirements rather than applying one model’s electrical details to another.

| Model | Capacity and output | Published dimensions and turntable | Listed features and fit notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sharp SMC2266HS | 2.2 cu. ft.; 1200 W | 24.4 × 19.6 × 13.6 inches (W × D × H); 16.5-inch turntable | Inverter and sensor cook. Sharp lists optional 27- and 30-inch trim kits for this model; verify compatibility, current status, and required clearances. |
| Panasonic NN-SC73LS | 1.6 cu. ft.; 1200 W | 21 3/4 × 12 13/16 × 17 3/4 inches (W × H × D) | Inverter, sensor reheat, and turbo defrost. |
| Panasonic NN-SN66KB | 1.2 cu. ft.; 1200 W | Confirm exact footprint in the current manual or specification sheet. | Genius Sensor and inverter features; 11 power levels. |
The listed figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance results. They do not establish which microwave heats best, lasts longest, or is most reliable. For the Sharp model, the specification sheet lists 120 V, 60 Hz, 14 A and UL compliance; do not generalize those details to other models.
Measure Before You Buy
- Measure the available counter space, including depth to the backsplash and room for the plug and cord.
- Compare the space with the exact model’s exterior width, depth, and height. Check the manual for required ventilation clearances.
- Measure the largest dish you expect to use. Check the turntable diameter and cavity dimensions, not just the capacity in cubic feet. Sharp notes that actual food-holding capacity is less than maximum dimensional capacity.
- Check whether the door can open fully without hitting a wall, cabinet, refrigerator panel, or nearby appliance.
- Identify a safe landing spot for hot dishes close to the microwave.
Countertop models can be flexible to place, but the manufacturer’s clearances and manual still matter. Do not assume a countertop unit can be enclosed in a cabinet or appliance garage. Use an installation method only when the manufacturer approves it for that model.
Choose Capacity for Your Dishes and Routine
Capacity labels alone do not show whether the dish you use will rotate or fit through the opening. Check the turntable, cavity, and door opening against your largest dinner plate, bowl, or casserole dish. The examples above range from 1.2 to 2.2 cubic feet at the same listed output, so wattage is not a reliable guide to footprint or capacity.

Sensor Cooking and Inverter Technology
Sensor cooking and inverter technology are different features. Manufacturer materials describe sensors as automatically adjusting cooking time or power, while inverter technology is described as providing more consistent power. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent head-to-head test findings.
Consider sensor cooking if automatic adjustment would be useful for foods you regularly heat. Consider inverter features if their advertised power control addresses your cooking needs. Compare the controls and features on the exact models, and avoid paying for features you do not expect to use.

Countertop, Enclosed, or Trim-Kit Installation
A countertop microwave is not automatically suitable for a built-in installation. Before placing one in a cabinet, pantry, or appliance garage, check whether the manufacturer allows that use and follow the model’s manual and clearance requirements.
A trim kit is specific to compatible models and is not simply a decorative frame. For example, Sharp lists optional trim kits for the SMC2266HS. Confirm that the kit is approved for the exact microwave and that the planned opening and ventilation match the manufacturer’s requirements. Do not box in a countertop appliance based on appearance alone.

Will a 1200-watt microwave fit my counter?
Wattage does not determine footprint. Compare the exact model’s external dimensions and required ventilation clearance with your counter, and account for the cord, door swing, and nearby surfaces.
How much capacity do I need?
Choose based on the dishes you use. Check the cavity dimensions and turntable diameter against your largest plate or container; cubic-foot capacity alone does not confirm that a dish will fit or rotate.

Is sensor cooking worth paying for?
It may be useful if you want a feature that automatically adjusts cooking time or power. Compare how the feature is described on the specific model, and remember that manufacturer claims are not independent comparative test results.
Is inverter technology the same as sensor cooking?
No. Manufacturer materials describe inverter technology as providing more consistent power, while sensors automatically adjust cooking time or power. They are distinct features.
Can I put a countertop microwave in a cabinet?
Only if the manufacturer permits that installation for the exact model and you follow its manual and clearance requirements. A compatible, manufacturer-approved trim kit may be an option for some models.
Which 1200-watt model is best?
The available evidence does not support a universally best model or a tested ranking. Compare verified dimensions, usable interior, controls, installation requirements, and ownership details against your kitchen and needs.
