A 900 CFM rating alone does not tell you how much air a range hood will move once it is installed. Before buying, check the model’s airflow-rating labels, specified duct size, route, sound rating, cooking-surface coverage, and the makeup-air rules adopted where you live. Choose the hood and the complete ventilation system together.
For example, XtremeAir lists its 36-inch UL13-U36 under-cabinet hood at approximately 900 CFM maximum, while also listing 503 CFM as its CEC airflow figure. The manufacturer does not explain how those figures relate, so neither should be treated as a guarantee of airflow through your installed ductwork.
A 900 CFM range hood should be selected as part of a system: the hood, duct, exterior termination, electrical connection, mounting and any required makeup air all matter. A model with a high headline rating may not suit a kitchen whose duct route or installation conditions do not match its instructions.
What 900 CFM Actually Means
CFM stands for cubic feet per minute. A 900 CFM figure is a product airflow rating, not a promise that the installed hood will move 900 cubic feet per minute through every duct route. Rating labels can use different bases: the XtremeAir UL13-U36 product page, for example, lists approximately 900 CFM maximum and separately lists 503 CFM CEC airflow without explaining the relationship between the two figures.

When comparing hoods, do not treat maximum, certified or measured installed airflow as interchangeable. Ask the manufacturer or installer what each listed figure represents and what performance is expected with the planned duct and its resistance. The cited product listing does not provide enough information to reconcile its two airflow figures.

For a homeowner comparing models, the useful question is not simply which hood has the highest CFM. Check the rating basis, duct specifications and route, hood coverage and placement, sound information, local makeup-air requirements, electrical and cabinet fit, certification, and service access.
Who Should Consider a 900 CFM Range Hood?
A high-capacity hood may suit a kitchen with substantial cooking ventilation needs, but the product rating alone does not establish that it is the right choice. Start with the range or cooktop, the selected hood’s placement guidance, and a practical route for ducting outdoors. Have the planned system assessed rather than choosing by a generic CFM rule.
Good Candidates for 900 CFM
A 900 CFM model may be worth considering where the cooking equipment and household’s ventilation needs call for a higher-capacity hood and the home can support the model’s installation requirements. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for hood width, depth and mounting position relative to the cooking surface. The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory retrofit guide advises following manufacturer placement instructions and using a hood that extends the full width and depth of the cooktop.

When 900 CFM May Be the Wrong Choice
A 900 CFM model may be a poor fit if the available duct route, cabinet space, electrical connection or makeup-air design cannot meet the model’s instructions and applicable local requirements. Do not assume that an existing smaller duct is adequate or that a reducer is acceptable. Check the selected model’s manual and have the route evaluated before ordering.
A different hood may be more appropriate if the planned installation cannot provide the specified ducting and outdoor discharge. A high airflow label by itself does not establish that a hood will capture cooking emissions effectively or quietly in a particular kitchen.
Best Types of 900 CFM Range Hoods
Choose a hood configuration that fits the kitchen and can be installed according to its current manual. The following example illustrates why specifications should be compared by their labels, not compressed into a single headline number.
| Specification | XtremeAir UL13-U36 listing | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Configuration | 36-inch under-cabinet hood | Confirm cabinet fit and mounting requirements |
| Airflow figures | Approximately 900 CFM maximum; 503 CFM CEC airflow | The listing does not explain how the figures relate; do not infer installed airflow |
| Duct connection | 8-inch round | Follow the selected model’s manual and assess the complete route |
| Sound | Approximately 6 sones | This is a manufacturer-listed figure, not an independent comparative test |
| Electrical and certification | 120 V at 60 Hz; ETL U.S. and Canada certification conforming to UL 507 | Verify the current product information and site requirements |
These are figures listed by XtremeAir for the UL13-U36 product page, accessed in 2026. The manufacturer notes its site information may be incomplete. Verify current specifications, manual, fit and availability before purchase; this example is not an endorsement or proof of comparative performance.
Under-Cabinet 900 CFM Hoods
Under-cabinet hoods fit below existing upper cabinets. Check cabinet dimensions, mounting instructions, duct outlet direction and the route to the exterior before choosing a model. The example above is an under-cabinet configuration with an 8-inch round outlet; its requirements should not be assumed to apply to other hoods.
Wall-Mounted 900 CFM Hoods
For a wall-mounted model, confirm its width, depth and mounting height against the cooking surface and manufacturer’s placement guidance. Do not rely on a generic overhang measurement: the selected hood’s instructions and the actual cooktop layout should guide placement.
Island 900 CFM Hoods
Island installations need careful assessment of hood placement, capture coverage, duct routing and secure mounting. Check the selected model’s instructions and plan a duct route to an outdoor termination before purchase. The dossier does not establish a universal airflow multiplier or cost for island hoods.

Duct Size, Duct Route, and Real Performance
A residential cooking hood that exhausts outdoors should discharge through a duct to the exterior, not into an attic or crawl space. The 2024 International Residential Code (IRC) model text calls for a smooth-interior, airtight duct with a backdraft damper and an exhaust path independent of other exhaust systems. It specifies galvanized steel, stainless steel or copper for domestic cooking exhaust ducts. This is model-code language; the edition adopted and any local amendments must be checked for the project.
Duct size is model-specific. XtremeAir specifies an 8-inch round connection for the UL13-U36, and its manual recommends maintaining an 8-inch-diameter pipe to outdoors for best performance. Do not assume another 900 CFM hood has the same connection or that a smaller existing duct is suitable. Follow the selected hood’s manual and have any proposed changes evaluated.
Plan a practical route to an exterior termination and ask the installer to assess its length, bends, joints, materials, damper and termination. The 2024 IRC includes a prescriptive duct-length table and an exception for systems meeting manufacturer design criteria or with installed flow verified using an airflow-measuring device. Local adoption and the selected hood’s instructions govern the actual job.

The 2024 IRC text does not permit domestic cooking exhaust to terminate in an attic or crawl space. It includes a limited listed ductless exception under specified conditions; do not assume that exception applies to a particular installation without checking the applicable code and listing.

Makeup Air: The Rule Many Buyers Miss
Do not assume that every home has the same makeup-air obligation. Under the 2024 IRC model-code provision, where a dwelling unit’s air barrier contains a gas, liquid or solid fuel-burning appliance that is neither direct-vent nor mechanically drafted, each exhaust system capable of exhausting more than 400 CFM is to be provided with makeup air at approximately the exhaust rate. Whether that provision applies depends on local adoption and amendments, the home’s appliances and configuration, and the project.
Broan advises checking local requirements because some states or cities amend the makeup-air threshold. Broan also recommends using its HVI-certified standard 0.1-inch static-pressure CFM rating when deciding whether makeup air is required. That is Broan’s recommendation, not a universal regulator interpretation.
Where required, makeup air needs a suitable outdoor-air path and a system designed for the home and hood. A generic kit is not automatically the right solution. Before buying a high-capacity hood, ask the contractor or mechanical designer to check the applicable code, appliances within the home’s air barrier, hood rating basis, makeup-air path and controls.

Compare sound figures only when they are reported on consistent terms and at relevant operating settings. XtremeAir lists approximately 6 sones for the UL13-U36; this is a manufacturer-listed figure, not an independent comparison with other hoods. The research does not establish a comparative noise winner.
Noise and performance depend on the selected equipment and the installed system. Follow the manufacturer’s duct and installation instructions, and ask the installer to check for rattling, vibration and other issues during operation.
Filters, Controls, Lighting, and Build Quality
Check the current manual and product information for filter type, removal and cleaning instructions, controls, lighting, electrical connection, cabinet clearance and replacement-part support. XtremeAir lists dishwasher-safe stainless-steel baffle filters for the UL13-U36; that listing does not establish long-term durability or cleaning performance.
Confirm that filters and service components can be accessed after installation. Check parts availability and the selected model’s installation and maintenance requirements rather than relying on general claims about a whole category of hoods.

Costs and Project Planning
The research dossier does not establish current purchase prices or typical installation-cost ranges for 900 CFM hoods. Costs depend on the selected product and the actual work, including ducting, exterior termination, electrical changes, cabinet modifications, permits and any makeup-air system. Obtain a site-specific estimate before purchase rather than relying on generic cost figures.
Discuss the scope with the contractor before ordering. A new duct route or makeup-air design may affect the project, and planning it before cabinets and finishes are complete can avoid rework.
When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro
Only consider a straightforward replacement if the new hood fits, the existing duct and electrical connection meet the selected model’s instructions, and local rules allow homeowner work. Confirm that the hood exhausts to the exterior and that the complete installation is appropriate for the home.
Hire a qualified installer when the project requires new or altered ductwork, roof or exterior penetration, cabinet changes, electrical work, makeup-air design, or coordination with fuel-burning appliances. Permits and requirements vary by jurisdiction; check them before ordering.

Our Practical Recommendation
Choose a 900 CFM hood only after checking its labeled airflow figures, specified ducting, placement, sound information and fit against the actual kitchen. Treat the XtremeAir UL13-U36 figures as a manufacturer specification example—not a promise of installed performance—and verify current product information and availability before purchase.

FAQ
Does a 900 CFM range hood always move 900 CFM once installed?
No. A product’s maximum rating, other labeled airflow figures and measured installed airflow are not necessarily equivalent. For example, XtremeAir lists approximately 900 CFM maximum and 503 CFM CEC airflow for its UL13-U36 but does not explain how the figures relate. Do not treat either figure as a guarantee of installed airflow.
Does a 900 CFM range hood require makeup air?
It depends on the locally adopted code and the home. The 2024 IRC model provision applies when certain non-direct-vent, non-mechanically drafted fuel-burning appliances are within the dwelling unit’s air barrier and an exhaust system can exceed 400 CFM. Check local amendments and have the home assessed.
What duct size does the XtremeAir UL13-U36 use?
XtremeAir lists an 8-inch round duct connection for the UL13-U36. Its manual recommends maintaining an 8-inch-diameter pipe to outdoors for best performance. Check the current manual for the exact model you select; duct requirements are not universal across all 900 CFM hoods.

What does the 6-sones figure mean for the UL13-U36?
XtremeAir lists approximately 6 sones for that model. Treat this as a manufacturer-listed figure, not an independent comparative noise test, and compare products only on consistent terms.
How much does it cost to install a 900 CFM range hood?
The research does not establish a reliable general price range. The cost depends on the selected hood and site-specific work such as ducting, exterior termination, electrical changes, cabinet modifications, permits and any required makeup-air system. Request an estimate based on the actual kitchen.
