Wash wooden spoons with warm, soapy water after use, rinse them, and dry them promptly before storage. For food safety, clean the spoon before sanitizing it, and use only a sanitizer labeled for food-contact utensils according to its directions. If the maker has not marked a spoon dishwasher-safe, hand-wash it.
Wooden spoons need brief, careful washing and thorough drying. Mineral oil may be an optional wood-care product when the spoon maker’s instructions allow it, but it is not a sanitizer and is not required on a fixed schedule.
What You Need to Clean Wooden Spoons
Use ordinary kitchen supplies and follow the spoon maker’s care directions when available.
- Warm, soapy water
- A soft sponge, dish cloth, or gentle brush
- A clean towel or single-use paper towel
- A drying rack or open space with airflow
- Optional: food-grade mineral oil or a conditioner labeled for food-contact wood, if consistent with the maker’s instructions
Avoid harsh scrubbing that could damage the surface. Do not use a surface disinfectant on a utensil that contacts food unless its label specifically says it is suitable for that use.

The Everyday Cleaning Method
Wash the spoon promptly after use so food residue does not dry onto it. USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) advises washing utensils with warm, soapy water; the FDA also advises washing utensils with hot, soapy water after preparing each food item. USDA FSIS and the FDA provide general utensil guidance, not a wooden-spoon-specific care schedule.
- Remove food residue. Scrape off food gently before it dries.
- Wash. Clean the bowl, handle, and joint with warm, soapy water and a soft sponge or brush.
- Rinse. Rinse away soap and remaining food debris.
- Dry promptly. Wipe the spoon with a clean towel or single-use paper towel, or let it air-dry.
- Store only when dry. Make sure it is thoroughly dry before putting it in a drawer or crowded utensil holder.
Dishwasher or Hand-Washing?
Do not assume that every wooden spoon is dishwasher-safe. USDA guidance discusses dishwasher use for items that are dishwasher-safe and made of nonporous materials; its separate advice about solid wood is specifically about cutting boards. Check the spoon’s care label. If it is not explicitly marked dishwasher-safe, hand-wash it.
| Choice | When it fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Hand-washing | When no dishwasher-safe marking is available, or the maker recommends hand-washing | Use warm, soapy water; rinse and dry promptly |
| Dishwasher | Only when the spoon maker says the specific spoon is dishwasher-safe | Follow the maker’s instructions; guidance for solid wood cutting boards does not establish spoon care |
See USDA FSIS guidance on cutting boards for its board-specific advice.

Cleaning vs. Sanitizing
Cleaning removes food, dirt, and some bacteria; sanitizing is most effective after cleaning. USDA FSIS emphasizes that cleaning should come first. For a wooden spoon, the sources do not establish a universal sanitizing schedule or a spoon-specific sanitizer routine.

Most importantly, use only a sanitizer intended for food-contact utensils and follow its label. Do not treat a household surface disinfectant as suitable for a spoon just because it is a disinfectant. USDA FSIS describes a diluted bleach solution for cutting boards and utensils that directly touch food, but its guidance does not specify a wooden-spoon-specific soaking duration or routine. Follow the source and product instructions rather than assuming a particular treatment is appropriate for every spoon.
Choosing a Sanitizing or Care Method
| Method or product | What the research supports | Practical limit |
|---|---|---|
| Food-contact sanitizer | Use a product intended for food-contact utensils according to its label, after cleaning | Do not substitute a general surface disinfectant or assume one method suits every spoon |
| Diluted bleach solution | USDA FSIS provides guidance for cutting boards and utensils that directly touch food | The guidance does not set a spoon-specific contact time or routine; follow official and product directions |
| Food-grade mineral oil | USDA FSIS recommends mineral oil for bamboo cutting boards to help retain moisture | This is optional wood-care context, not a spoon-specific safety rule or sanitizer |
How to Care for and Save Wooden Spoons
Dry a spoon thoroughly before storing it. If the maker’s instructions allow, food-grade mineral oil may be used as optional wood conditioning. USDA FSIS mentions mineral oil for bamboo cutting boards; that is not a spoon-specific recommendation. Use a product labeled suitable for food-contact wood and follow its directions. Do not claim that oil sanitizes a spoon or prevents foodborne illness.

Better Drying and Storage
After washing, dry the spoon with a clean towel or single-use paper towel, or let it air-dry. Store it only after it is thoroughly dry. Avoid trapping a damp spoon in a closed drawer or crowded holder.

General food-safety advice applies: wash utensils with warm, soapy water, rinse away residue, and dry them after cleaning. For commercial food service, food-contact materials and procedures may be subject to local requirements. The FDA Food Code is a model code, so operators should check the rules that apply to their location and operation rather than treating home-care advice as a compliance standard.
