One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor most finished hardwood floors, remove loose grit first, then use a small amount of cleaner approved for your floor and finish with a microfiber mop or pad. Use minimal liquid and wipe it away rather than leaving the floor wet. Follow the flooring or finish manufacturer’s instructions, especially for oiled, waxed, unfinished, or unsealed wood.
Check the Floor and Its Finish First
“Hardwood” alone does not tell you which cleaner is safe. Care instructions can differ by finish: for example, Bona distinguishes timber floors from oiled floors, and its professional cleaner guidance is for unwaxed polyurethane-finished wood. These are product-specific recommendations, not universal rules for every floor.
If you know the flooring brand or finish, check its care instructions before cleaning. If the finish is unknown, the floor has unusual care requirements, or the finish appears damaged, ask the flooring manufacturer or a qualified flooring professional rather than experimenting with a stronger cleaner.
A Safe Routine for Cleaning Hardwood Floors
- Check the care instructions. Confirm that your cleaner is compatible with the floor and finish.
- Remove loose grit. Vacuum with a hard-floor-suitable tool, sweep with a soft broom, or use a dust mop before applying liquid cleaner.
- Use a compatible cleaner. Choose a cleaner labeled for your type of wood floor and finish, and follow its directions.
- Apply very little liquid. Mist the floor or pad only as the product label directs. Use a microfiber mop or pad to loosen and wipe away soil; do not leave standing moisture.
- Rinse or change the pad when dirty. This helps avoid spreading soil or leaving streaks.
Do not wet-mop the floor or assume that more cleaner will work better. The aim is to clean the surface while leaving it clean and dry.

Choose Products by Finish Compatibility
| Product or tool | What to check | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Hardwood-floor cleaner | Label compatibility with your floor and finish; follow application directions | Routine cleaning |
| Microfiber mop and pad | Use with the compatible cleaner and change or rinse the pad when dirty | Apply cleaner and remove loosened soil |
| Polish or refresher | Confirm finish compatibility and follow directions; test an inconspicuous area if instructed | Conditional maintenance product, not a routine cleaner |
A purpose-made hardwood cleaner and microfiber mop are relevant options, but no single brand or product is mandatory. Bona’s product and technical guidance, for example, describes particular products and their intended floor types; check the instructions for your own floor and the product you choose.
Common Mistakes That Can Dull a Finish
- Using too much water: Use minimal liquid and wipe it away instead of leaving the floor wet.
- Using vinegar or methylated spirits: Bona warns that these can dull the finish. Do not assume a homemade mixture is safe for every floor.
- Using all-purpose or soap-based cleaners or wax: Manufacturer guidance warns these may be unsuitable. Check your specific floor-care instructions.
- Treating polish as a routine cleaner: Polish is a separate maintenance product. Check compatibility and directions; Bona’s polish guidance excludes unfinished or unsealed wood and calls for a spot test.
- Guessing when the finish is unknown: Identify the floor or ask the manufacturer or a qualified flooring professional before trying an unfamiliar product.
When to Ask for Professional Advice
If the floor has visible finish failure, persistent dullness, or an unknown coating, do not try to solve it by applying vinegar, polish, or a stronger cleaner. A professional can help identify the finish and determine whether cleaning or finish maintenance is appropriate.
