In most homes, crickets are not a true indoor breeding problem. They are usually getting in through a weak spot in the building envelope, then hiding in basements, garages, laundry rooms, crawl-space access areas, and cluttered corners.
On our job sites, cricket complaints often point to the same construction issues we look for during weatherization work: daylight under exterior doors, torn screens, missing crawl-space vent mesh, unsealed utility penetrations, damp foundation walls, mulch piled against siding, and garage door corners that no longer meet the slab. Spraying the room may kill a few insects, but it will not fix the door sweep that is letting new ones in every night.
The good news is that most homeowners can reduce cricket activity within a few days and get meaningful control within 2 to 3 weeks. The durable fix is a combination of pest control and house maintenance: remove the active crickets, dry out the places they like, and close the routes they use to get inside.
1. Confirm Where the Crickets Are Coming From
Before buying sprays or calling an exterminator, spend 30 to 60 minutes locating the activity. Crickets are most active at night, and their chirping can make it sound like they are everywhere. In reality, activity is often concentrated on one side of the home, near one exterior door, one basement window, one garage corner, or one damp crawl-space opening.
Common indoor invaders include house crickets, field crickets, and camel crickets, also called cave crickets. House and field crickets are the classic chirping insects. Camel crickets are hump-backed, long-legged, and often silent; they are common in damp basements, crawl spaces, garages, and storage rooms. Crickets usually enter by accident and only rarely reproduce indoors, so the best control strategy is to stop the outside pressure and close the access points.

Do a daylight inspection first
Walk the exterior perimeter slowly. Look at the bottom 3 feet of the house first, because that is where most entry points occur. Check under exterior doors, garage door corners, patio sliders, basement windows, siding transitions, foundation cracks, sill plates, rim joists, dryer vents, bath vents, hose bibs, cable penetrations, AC line-set openings, crawl-space doors, and foundation vents.
Use a flashlight even during the day. If you can see daylight from inside under a door or around a garage seal, insects can get through. A gap as small as 1/8 inch can admit many insects, and larger worn thresholds commonly leave 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch openings at the corners.
Then inspect at night
At night, turn off unnecessary indoor lights and look outside around porch lights, garage lights, patio doors, and basement windows. Crickets are attracted to light and shelter. If one side of the house has bright white exterior lighting, tall grass, damp mulch, stacked firewood, and a loose door sweep, that side is a likely entry zone.

Check along baseboards, behind stored boxes, under utility sinks, near floor drains, around washer and dryer hookups, at crawl-space hatches, and along the garage slab edge. Do not rely on sound alone; chirping bounces off hard surfaces and can mislead you by several feet.
2. Vacuum Visible Crickets and Clean Up Hiding Areas
The fastest way to remove crickets already inside is mechanical: vacuum them. Use a hose attachment along baseboards, behind appliances, under shelves, in garage corners, around basement storage, and near the crawl-space access. Empty the vacuum contents into a sealed bag and move it outdoors right away.
Vacuuming is especially useful because it removes live crickets, dead insects, debris, and potential food sources. Crickets feed on a wide range of organic material, and clutter gives them protection. You do not need to empty the entire basement in one afternoon, but clearing a 12- to 18-inch inspection path along foundation walls makes a real difference. That same clear band also helps you see water stains, cracks, pest droppings, and failed seals.
Where to focus indoors
Start in the rooms where crickets are actually appearing. In finished rooms, inspect behind low furniture, around sliding doors, under radiators, and near exterior walls. In basements and garages, focus on the perimeter. In utility rooms, check pipe penetrations, floor drains, sump pits, and laundry areas. If you have a crawl space, inspect the hatch, door, or access panel; a loose panel can act like an open insect doorway.

For pet- and child-sensitive households, vacuuming and trapping should be the first line of control. Avoid improvising with bleach, essential oils, household cleaners, or unlabeled products. Those are not substitutes for labeled pest-control materials, and they can create indoor air or surface safety problems without solving the entry issue.
3. Use Sticky Traps as Monitoring Tools, Not Just Catchers
Sticky traps are cheap, simple, and useful. A typical pack costs about $5 to $20 in 2026. Place them along walls, because crickets tend to travel edges rather than cross open floors. Good locations include basement walls, garage perimeters, laundry rooms, utility rooms, crawl-space access points, behind storage shelves, near exterior doors, and beside patio sliders.
The key is to use traps as data. Number each trap with a marker and write down where it was placed. Check the traps once a week. If trap 4 near the garage service door catches 12 crickets and trap 7 near the basement stairs catches none, you know where to focus sealing and exterior cleanup.
| Trap location | What it tells you | Typical action |
|---|---|---|
| Garage door corners | Bottom seal, side seal, or slab gap may be failing | Adjust or replace garage weatherseal; seal side gaps |
| Basement wall below a window | Window frame, well, or foundation crack may be active | Repair screen, seal frame gap, clean window well |
| Crawl-space hatch | Crawl space may be damp or poorly sealed | Check humidity, vapor barrier, vent screens, access fit |
| Laundry or utility room | Pipe, dryer vent, or line-set penetration may be open | Seal penetrations with caulk, foam, or mesh as appropriate |
| Patio slider track | Worn pile Weatherstripping or track debris may be present | Clean track; replace worn weatherstripping or door sweep |
Keep traps out of reach of children and pets. If you are catching only one or two crickets in the first week, you may be dealing with occasional invaders. If traps are filling repeatedly, especially near a crawl space or basement wall, treat that as a building-condition clue rather than just an insect count.

4. Reduce Moisture in Basements, Crawl Spaces, and Garages
Moisture control is one of the most effective ways to prevent crickets, especially camel crickets. Damp crawl spaces, wet foundation corners, sweating pipes, clogged gutters, poor grading, and storage directly against concrete all create the kind of protected habitat crickets like.
Start with the basics. Fix plumbing leaks. Extend downspouts at least 4 to 6 feet away from the foundation where site conditions allow. Keep gutters clean. Make sure soil slopes away from the house. A practical target is about 6 inches of fall over the first 10 feet away from the foundation, where the lot allows it. If a patio, driveway, or neighboring property prevents that, drainage may require a more specific fix.
Use humidity numbers, not guesswork
In basements and crawl spaces, use a hygrometer. They are inexpensive and give you a better picture than feel or smell. If relative humidity stays above 60%, especially in a crawl space, you are creating favorable conditions for crickets and other pests. A portable dehumidifier often costs about $150 to $350 or more depending on capacity, but it is only part of the solution if water is entering from outside.
For crawl spaces, look for torn vapor barriers, exposed soil, missing vent screens, disconnected ducts, standing water, condensation on framing, and musty insulation. Persistent dampness may require vapor barrier repair, drainage correction, air sealing, insulation work, or professional crawl-space repairs. Repeated pesticide treatment will not compensate for a wet crawl space.

Do not ignore the garage
Garages collect leaf litter, cardboard, pet food, grass clippings, stored firewood, and moisture from vehicles. Sweep the slab, remove organic debris, and store items on shelves instead of directly against exterior walls. Check the rubber bottom seal on the overhead door. If the seal is flattened, split, or curled, crickets can enter at the corners even when the door looks closed.
5. Seal the Entry Points Like a Builder
Exclusion is where construction knowledge matters. The goal is not to smear caulk randomly around the house. The goal is to match the repair material to the gap, movement, moisture exposure, and surface type.
For small stationary gaps around trim, siding transitions, and window or door frames, a quality exterior acrylic latex or silicone caulk usually costs about $4 to $12 per tube. A basic caulk gun costs about $8 to $25. For larger utility penetrations, low-expansion foam may cost $6 to $15 per can, but foam should be protected from sunlight and pests where exposed. For vents and larger openings, use stainless or galvanized hardware cloth or mesh, often $10 to $40 for a small roll, secured mechanically so it cannot be pushed loose.
Doors and thresholds
Exterior doors deserve close attention. A replacement door sweep usually costs about $10 to $40 per door. Weatherstripping commonly runs $8 to $30 per door or window. Look for daylight at the bottom corners, torn bulb seals, loose thresholds, warped slabs, and doors that no longer latch tightly. If the threshold is set too low, a new sweep may still leave a gap. If the door is racked or the jamb has moved, weatherstripping alone may be a temporary patch.
Recommended Free Tools
Patio sliders need clean tracks and intact pile weatherstripping. Basement doors and bulkhead doors often need heavier weathersealing because they are close to grade and exposed to splashback. Garage service doors are another common weak point because they get heavy use and are rarely maintained.
Vents, screens, and penetrations
Repair torn window screens and damaged vent screens. Screen repair kits typically cost about $10 to $25. Crawl-space vents should be screened and intact, but they also have to meet local code and ventilation requirements. Do not permanently block required crawl-space ventilation without a proper moisture-control plan. If you are converting a vented crawl space to a sealed or conditioned assembly, that is a building-science project, not a quick pest fix.
At utility penetrations, seal around cable, refrigerant lines, hose bibs, gas lines, electrical conduits, and dryer vents. Use compatible materials, and keep clearances around heat-producing or combustion-related equipment. Dryer vents need working dampers and should never be blocked with fine mesh that traps lint. Gas appliance vents, combustion-air openings, and exhaust terminations require special care; when in doubt, bring in a qualified contractor.
6. Make the Exterior Less Attractive
Even a well-sealed house is easier to protect when the exterior is not inviting crickets to the foundation. Keep grass mowed, weeds trimmed, and leaf litter cleared near the house. Where practical, maintain a 12- to 18-inch clear, dry inspection band at the foundation. Avoid stacking firewood, lumber, cardboard, or storage bins directly against siding or foundation walls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMulch is useful for landscaping, but thick, damp mulch piled against siding creates shelter and moisture. Keep mulch below siding and trim clearances, and avoid burying weep holes or covering the bottom of cladding systems. If the house has repeated pest pressure, consider stone or a thinner mulch profile immediately near the foundation, while still managing drainage and splashback.
Adjust exterior lighting
Crickets are attracted to lights, especially bright white lights near doors and windows. Switch exterior bulbs near entry points to warmer, yellow, or sodium-vapor-style options where appropriate. Use motion sensors or timers so lights are not on all night. Relocate bright security lighting away from doors when possible, or aim it so it illuminates the area without washing the wall and threshold in light.
This does not mean you should make entrances unsafe. Keep stairs, landings, and walkways properly lit. The goal is to reduce unnecessary insect attraction at the exact points where the building envelope is weakest.

7. Use Labeled Products Carefully or Bring in a Licensed Pro
Pesticides can help, but they should be the last layer, not the foundation of the plan. Indoor air quality matters, and pesticide labels are legal directions. Use products only where the label allows, at the labeled rate, and in the labeled locations. If a product is labeled for crack-and-crevice use, threshold use, or exterior perimeter use, follow those directions exactly. Do not broadcast indoor pesticides through living spaces because crickets are chirping somewhere in the room.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

For many homes, a targeted exterior perimeter treatment may be more useful than repeated indoor spraying, but only after sealing, cleanup, and moisture work are underway. Baits and dusts also have specific placement rules, and some products are not appropriate around children, pets, food-preparation areas, or certain indoor surfaces.
When pesticides make sense
Consider labeled products when traps confirm ongoing activity, entry points have been sealed, exterior habitat has been reduced, and you still have cricket pressure. Treat cracks, thresholds, voids, or exterior areas only if the product label allows that use. Wear the protective equipment listed on the label, ventilate as directed, and store products in their original containers.
If labels are confusing, the infestation is heavy, or the activity is tied to a crawl space, basement moisture, or inaccessible wall/foundation gaps, hire a licensed pest professional. A good pest pro should inspect, identify the cricket type, explain the treatment locations, and point out the building conditions that are keeping the problem alive.

Most light cricket problems can be handled with $30 to $150 in DIY materials if the repairs are simple: sticky traps, caulk, a door sweep, weatherstripping, and screen patching. Costs rise when the real problem is a failing exterior door, damaged basement window, missing vent screen, standing water, poor grading, or a damp crawl space.
| Item or service | Typical 2026 US cost | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Sticky traps | $5-$20 per pack | Monitoring and capturing active crickets |
| Caulk | $4-$12 per tube | Small cracks at trim, frames, and siding gaps |
| Caulk gun | $8-$25 | Needed if you do not already own one |
| Door sweep | $10-$40 per door | Gaps under exterior doors |
| Weatherstripping | $8-$30 per door or window | Loose door and window contact points |
| Screen repair kit | $10-$25 | Torn window, door, or vent screens |
| Expanding foam | $6-$15 per can | Selected larger penetrations, protected from exposure |
| Hardware cloth or mesh | $10-$40 for small rolls | Vent and larger opening protection |
| Dehumidifier | $150-$350+ | Basement or crawl-space humidity control |
| One-time pest-control visit | About $108-$261 nationally for a 1,500-sq-ft home; broader exterminator ranges commonly run about $131-$341 | Persistent or heavy activity needing professional treatment |
| Monthly pest service | About $44-$55 per month | Recurring pressure or broader pest-control plans |
Regional pricing varies. California general pest visits are often reported around $225 to $280. North Carolina general pest treatments may range from about $95 to $560, with a median around $160. Texas initial treatments are commonly cited around $150 to $400 depending on home size and severity. These numbers are useful planning ranges, not bids. A house with simple door gaps is a different job from a house with crawl-space water, foundation cracks, and damaged vents.
When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro
DIY is reasonable when you are seeing a few crickets, you can identify the likely entry points, and the fixes are straightforward. A homeowner can usually install sticky traps, replace a door sweep, repair a screen, clear vegetation, switch exterior bulbs, and caulk small gaps. Give those repairs 2 to 3 weeks while tracking trap counts. If the weekly catch is dropping, the plan is working.
Hire a licensed pest-control professional when activity remains heavy after 2 to 3 weeks, traps keep filling in the same area, you cannot identify the entry side of the house, or pesticide labels are not clear to you. Bring in a contractor when the cricket issue appears tied to construction defects: rotted door jambs, failed thresholds, damaged basement windows, missing crawl-space vent screens, foundation cracks, bad grading, standing water, or crawl-space humidity that will not stay below about 60%.

There is overlap here. A pest professional can reduce the active population, while a builder or repair contractor fixes the conditions that allowed the problem to persist. The best results come when those two parts are coordinated instead of treated as separate problems.
Safety Notes for Families, Pets, and Building Systems
Use nonchemical steps first in living areas: vacuuming, sealing, moisture correction, and sticky traps placed where children and pets cannot reach them. Do not use outdoor-only products indoors. Do not mix pesticides with cleaners. Do not apply products to countertops, toys, bedding, pet bowls, or HVAC returns unless the label specifically allows the application, which is uncommon for general cricket control.
Building safety matters too. Do not block dryer vents with mesh that can trap lint. Do not alter combustion-air openings without professional review. Do not seal a damp crawl space by simply closing vents and walking away; that can trap moisture and worsen wood decay or mold conditions. If repairs involve structural foundation cracks, electrical penetrations, gas lines, or major drainage changes, use qualified trades and follow local code requirements.
For most houses, the winning formula is simple: remove the crickets you have, use traps to learn where they are moving, dry out damp spaces, seal the envelope, reduce exterior attraction, and use professional help when the problem is larger than a few insects. That approach costs less over time than repeated spraying and leaves the home tighter, drier, and easier to maintain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I have crickets inside my house?
Crickets usually enter through gaps at doors, windows, garage seals, foundation cracks, crawl-space vents, utility penetrations, or damaged screens. They are often drawn toward exterior lights, damp areas, tall grass, mulch, leaf litter, and sheltered storage near the foundation.
What is the fastest way to get rid of crickets indoors?
Vacuum visible crickets, empty the vacuum contents into a sealed outdoor bag, and place sticky traps along walls in basements, garages, laundry rooms, and near exterior doors. Then inspect and seal the entry points so new crickets do not replace the ones you removed.
Do crickets lay eggs and reproduce inside houses?
They can in favorable conditions, but common house and field crickets usually enter accidentally and only rarely reproduce indoors. Persistent indoor activity is more often caused by ongoing entry, damp hiding areas, and exterior conditions that keep pushing crickets toward the house.
How much does professional cricket pest control cost in 2026?
A one-time general pest-control visit commonly runs about $108 to $261 nationally for a 1,500-square-foot home, with broader exterminator ranges around $131 to $341. Regional costs vary, and prices rise when crawl-space moisture, foundation gaps, or building repairs are involved.
How do I keep crickets out of my basement, garage, or crawl space?
Reduce humidity, repair leaks, keep storage off perimeter walls, replace failed door and garage seals, repair screens, cover vents with proper mesh, seal utility penetrations, and keep vegetation, woodpiles, and damp mulch away from the foundation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When should I call a pest-control professional?
Call a licensed pro if cricket activity stays heavy after 2 to 3 weeks of trapping and sealing, if you cannot find the entry points, if you are unsure about pesticide labels, or if activity is concentrated in a crawl space, basement, or foundation area with moisture problems.
