Usually, you cannot safely add a true riving knife to an older table saw that was not designed for one. A riving knife must stay closely aligned with the blade and rise or lower with the blade assembly. The exceptions are model-specific conversion kits engineered for a particular saw. Check your exact model and its manual before buying anything; if no supported knife retrofit exists, a compatible splitter may be an option for some cuts, but it is a different device.
What makes a riving knife different from a splitter?
Both devices sit behind the blade in the kerf and help keep a cut from closing onto the rear teeth. Their mounting and movement differ. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission staff’s 2019 table-saw update defines a splitter as a plate aligned behind the blade that does not move up and down with the arbor. It describes a riving knife as a curved plate attached to the arbor assembly, generally closer to the blade and no higher than the blade top, that rises and lowers with the blade. The document is staff material and is marked as not reviewed or accepted by the Commission.
| Device | How it moves | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Riving knife | Moves with the blade assembly as blade height changes. | Its close relationship to the blade can allow it to remain in place for some non-through cuts, but only where the saw and knife manuals permit. |
| Splitter | Usually stays fixed relative to blade height. | Its distance from the blade can vary as blade height changes; it may need to be removed for dado or rabbet cuts. |
Neither name alone establishes compatibility. The saw’s mounting, blade kerf, throat plate, clearance, and the intended cut all matter.
Why a retrofit is usually not practical
A true riving knife has to track the blade closely through height adjustment. Many older saws move the blade in an arc and were built without a mounting structure that coordinates a knife with that motion. A fixed plate’s distance from the blade can change as the blade rises or lowers; attaching a knife to an unprepared saw does not solve that alignment problem. Grizzly Support explains that retrofitting such a saw may require substantial internal redesign, so an improvised mount is not a safe substitute for an engineered conversion.

When a true riving-knife retrofit may work
A conversion is a possibility only when it is engineered for the exact saw model and configuration. The General 650RNK conversion-kit manual, for example, describes a kit for the specified General 650 3HP saw and warns not to fit it to another model. This is evidence of a model-specific exception, not confirmation that the kit is currently available. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized specialist to verify current parts, support, and the precise production version before proceeding.
How to check your saw before buying a device
- Identify the exact saw. Record the make, full model number, and production version if applicable. A brand name alone is not enough to establish fit.
- Check the owner’s manual. Determine whether the saw was designed for a riving knife, splitter, or guard assembly, and follow the specified mounting and adjustment procedure.
- Ask about an approved replacement or conversion. Confirm with the saw maker or a qualified specialist that the part is intended for that exact model. Do not assume a similar-looking saw uses the same mounting.
- Verify the complete setup. Confirm mounting, blade kerf versus device thickness, alignment, throat-plate clearance, and which cuts are permitted. Also check whether the blade guard and anti-kickback pawls remain usable as directed by the saw manual.
- Do not install or operate an unverified device. If compatibility or clearance cannot be established, stop and seek model-specific guidance rather than fabricating a mount or forcing a part to fit.
If a true knife is not available: consider a compatible splitter
A splitter can be a separate option for some through-cut setups; it does not become a riving knife simply because it sits in the kerf. For instance, MICROJIG’s MJ SPLITTER full-kerf product page specifies use with 1/8-inch kerf blades, gives a kerf range of 0.118–0.145 inches, offers reversible offsets, and limits stated use to 90-degree through-cuts. Those specifications should not be applied to other MICROJIG variants or to a saw without confirming fit. Consult the relevant MICROJIG splitter manuals and the saw manual for installation and cut limits.

Shark Guard lists model-specific splitters, manually adjustable riving knives, and guard packages. Its riving knives and splitters information notes that some saws can use only fixed-height splitters, requires the knife or splitter to be thinner than the blade kerf, and identifies mounting-bracket or throat-plate limitations for some packages. Its Delta ARK package lists compatible models but warns it is not suitable for every saw. Give the vendor your exact model and confirm fit, installation, and supported cuts before purchasing.

Do not remove a splitter or guard except as directed for the specific operation in the saw manual, and restore the required equipment afterward. CPSC staff stated in its September 14, 2011 advance notice that “A properly installed riving knife may be the most effective way to prevent kickback because it limits workpiece access to the rear teeth of the saw blade.” That statement appears in staff material marked as not reviewed or accepted by the Commission; it is not a final Commission finding. It reinforces the importance of correct installation, not the safety of an improvised retrofit.
