100 Day Hotel Challenge puts married developers Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt in a renovation contest with a tight deadline, a fixed team budget and two neighboring family-owned hotels on North Carolina’s Crystal Coast. Brian ultimately won, according to HGTV’s series page.

What is 100 Day Hotel Challenge?

HGTV’s six-episode competition follows Brian and Mika as they lead opposing teams renovating hotels in Salter Path, North Carolina. Each team had 100 days and a stated budget of $225,000. The properties are The Beacon Hotel, formerly the Salter Path Inn, and The William & Garland Motel. HGTV described them as dated, family-owned properties dating to the 1950s; a later HGTV interview characterized them as roughly 70 years old.

The show’s focus is practical hospitality renovation as well as visual change: teams need to update aging spaces, improve function and storage, and give the properties a coastal character while responding to what hotel owners and guests need.

How the renovation competition unfolds

The episode sequence moves from guest rooms through shared and specialty spaces, ending with the hotels’ exteriors. That progression lets viewers see how each team approaches both individual rooms and the broader guest experience.

#1 Best Overall
Stage Renovation focus
Guest rooms Single and double rooms, with modern features, practical function and storage.
Shared spaces Lobbies, kitchenettes and outdoor lounges.
Higher-end accommodation Luxury suites.
Finale The hotels’ exteriors.

HGTV brought in other renovation and design personalities to work with the teams. In the premiere, Brian worked with Bryan and Sarah Baeumler, while Mika worked with Jonathan Knight and Kristina Crestin. The wider announced lineup included Michel Smith Boyd, Galey Alix, Carmeon Hamilton, Grace Mitchell, Scott McGillivray, Lauren Makk, Cristy Lee, Poonam Moore, Kim Myles and Kim Wolfe.

How the winners are chosen

Drew and Jonathan Scott judge the renovated spaces. HGTV says their considerations include amenities, the overall guest experience, design, hotel-owner requests and potential room-rate increases. The network does not publish a numerical scoring formula, so those criteria should not be read as a disclosed point system.

Each episode awards $5,000 to the charity chosen by the winning space’s team. The finale determines the overall winning spouse, whose charity receives $50,000. HGTV lists Brian as the competition’s overall winner.

What the format can—and cannot—show about hotel renovation

The contest provides a useful lens on familiar renovation trade-offs: how much space to give storage versus circulation, how to make common areas welcoming, and how to balance design choices with owner priorities and guest comfort. Those are meaningful considerations in a hospitality project, where the experience extends beyond the guest room to arrival, shared amenities and the building’s exterior.

But the show’s published constraints are not a complete construction cost report or a controlled comparison of hotel performance. The stated $225,000 is the team budget, not a sourced itemized accounting of labor, materials or other expenses. Nor do the official materials establish standardized before-and-after measures of occupancy, operating costs or actual room revenue. The judges’ consideration of possible room-rate increases is a criterion, not proof of realized results.
