Bob Vila reported testing 10 covers for one hour each, outdoors and outside a controlled laboratory; all reportedly raised water temperature 4–5°F during midafternoon sessions when air temperatures were 89–92°F. Those results are useful as a comparison point, not a guaranteed outcome for another pool.
A solar blanket is primarily a floating evaporation-control and heat-management product. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that solar covers reduce evaporation by 50–95% while they are in use, with results varying by pool shape and how completely the surface is covered. The EPA calls pool covers “the most effective method of reducing water losses from evaporation.”

Bob Vila’s reported test result was a 4–5°F rise after one hour in midafternoon conditions, with air temperatures of 89–92°F. Because the test was brief and uncontrolled, it should not be treated as an expected temperature increase for every pool, climate or installation. How to choose the right solar blanket
1. Match the water surface
Measure the pool’s actual water surface and choose a cover made for its shape. Round, rectangular and oval options are commonly listed; Steinbach, for example, publishes sizes for all three. For an unusual shape, a larger cover that can be trimmed may work, but follow the chosen product’s instructions and leave no material obstructing equipment or walkways.
2. Compare thickness with handling
The reviewed models are listed at 8, 12 or 16 mil. Thickness is a construction specification, not a guaranteed temperature-performance formula. A thicker blanket may be heavier and more cumbersome to remove, so consider the cover’s weight, storage and whether one person can handle it safely.

3. Treat color as a model detail, not a promise
The comparison includes clear and blue polyethylene or polymer covers. Color alone does not establish that one cover will heat a pool more effectively. Compare the complete model specification, fit and practical usability.
4. Plan for routine deployment
The EPA says ease of use matters because evaporation is reduced only while the cover is on the water. A hand-crank reel can make a bubble cover easier to deploy; Steinbach likewise identifies a roller as useful for larger pools or more convenient handling. Choose an arrangement that makes covering and uncovering realistic for your household.

5. Check safety status before buying
A floating solar blanket is not a child- or pet-safety barrier. EPA guidance identifies ASTM F1346 in the context of safety covers, and Steinbach warns that its solar covers are not suitable as safety or winter covers. If a safety barrier is required, use a specifically safety-rated cover that meets applicable local requirements.
What solar covers can and cannot do
Solar covers are designed to use the sun’s energy to heat pool water and to limit evaporation. The EPA’s category estimate is a 50–95% reduction in evaporation while the cover is applied, varying with shape and coverage; it is not a product guarantee. Leaving portions of the surface exposed reduces the potential benefit.

The cover does not replace normal pool maintenance, and it does not become a safety cover because it is thick, opaque or tightly fitted.
Correct use and care
- Position it correctly. Lay the blanket directly on the water with the air-bubble side facing down and the smooth side facing up, as described in Steinbach’s instructions.
- Trim only when necessary. Steinbach says the material can be cut with scissors. Measure carefully and confirm the instructions for your specific model before trimming.
- Remove it completely before swimming. Do not leave a floating blanket on the pool while people are in the water.
- Store it out of prolonged direct sun when rolled up. Steinbach advises avoiding extended direct sunlight exposure while the cover is off the pool and rolled.
- Use a reel for larger surfaces when helpful. A hand-crank reel can reduce the effort needed to deploy and remove the blanket, increasing the chance it will be used consistently.
Are rebates available?
The EPA says some utilities offer rebates of up to $200 for qualified pool covers. That is a general possibility, not a current promise for a particular location.
