A Midea 6,000 BTU U-shaped inverter window AC is advertised at as low as 32 dBA, but brand sound figures use different modes and measurement conditions, so they are not a reliable head-to-head ranking. Start by sizing the room, then compare operating noise, window fit, installation and sleep controls.
What is the quietest air conditioner for a bedroom?
Among the examples below, Midea advertises its 6,000 BTU U-shaped inverter window unit at “as low as 32 dBA.” That is a manufacturer-published minimum, not an independent comparison against the other models. Frigidaire lists 42 dBA for model FHWW085WE1, LG lists 44 dB for LW1022FVSM, and GE lists 44 dBA for PWDV12WWF in quiet mode at low cool. The modes and measurement conditions are not established as equivalent, so the figures do not prove which unit will sound quietest in your bedroom.
For a useful comparison, look up the noise figure for the exact model and the setting you expect to use at night. Also check that its cooling capacity fits the room, that it fits your window, and that it offers controls such as sleep mode or a timer. A unit that is too small may struggle to cool; selecting an oversized unit solely for a low advertised sound figure is not a sound sizing strategy.
How many BTUs do I need for my bedroom?
Measure the room’s length and width in feet and multiply them to estimate square footage. For an irregular shape, split the room into simple rectangles, calculate each area, and add the results. ENERGY STAR’s U.S. room-air-conditioner guidance bases its chart on an 8-foot ceiling. Its recommendations are:

Use ENERGY STAR’s listed adjustments for room conditions: reduce capacity by 10% for heavy shade; increase it by 10% for a very sunny room; add 600 BTU/h for each regular occupant beyond two; and add 4,000 BTU/h if the room is used as a kitchen. These examples cover different room sizes. Their sound figures come from the manufacturers and should be treated as model- and mode-specific claims, not standardized independent test results.

Are portable air conditioners louder than window units?
The available figures do not support a category-wide answer. One Midea Canada product page lists 50.5 dBA for portable model MP86SQWBA2RCM, but that single Canadian model cannot establish how all portable ACs compare with window units. The window-unit sound figures above also use different modes and are not shown to follow a shared measurement protocol. Why installation and fit matter
Check the window opening and installation instructions before choosing a model. A listed sound figure cannot compensate for an incompatible window or poor installation. ENERGY STAR warns that improper installation can leak as much air as a 6-square-inch hole, making careful fitting and sealing relevant to comfort and energy use. Follow the instructions for the exact unit and window type.
Also consider how you will control the unit overnight. Sleep modes, timers and remote or app controls can help you set cooling without repeatedly getting up, but check which functions the particular model includes rather than assuming they are standard.

What inverter means—and what it does not promise
An inverter compressor varies its speed rather than relying only on switching compressor operation on and off. LG describes its system as adjusting compressor motor speed to regulate temperature. This explains the technology, but it does not guarantee that every inverter AC will be quieter in every room or at every operating setting. The sound you hear depends on the model and how it is running.
Does ENERGY STAR certification cover portable ACs?
ENERGY STAR’s room-air-conditioner certification scope excludes portable air conditioners under its Version 4.0 specification, effective October 30, 2023. That does not establish that every portable model is inefficient or noisy; it means the room-AC certification should not be treated as applying to portables. Verify certification for the exact product and current specification. The Frigidaire and GE examples above are identified by their manufacturers as ENERGY STAR certified, while Midea Canada lists portable model MP86SQWBA2RCM as not ENERGY STAR certified.
