6 Bathroom Features People Regret the Most, According to a Designer

From partial shower doors to too few outlets, these six bathroom choices can create daily hassles. A designer also highlights two upgrades clients appreciate.

Bathroom features that look striking in a showroom can become daily annoyances when they make a room drafty, harder to clean, uncomfortable to use, or short on practical details. Designer Emily LaMarque identifies six common regret-prone choices—and two upgrades she says clients appreciate.

Six bathroom features people regret

1. An oversized shower with only a partial door

A wide-open shower can create a spacious look, but it may also feel cold and drafty, especially in winter. LaMarque recommends weighing that open appearance against warmth and spray containment. Options she suggests include an enclosed glass-door shower or a design with only a small gap between the glass and ceiling. The article provides no measured temperature or splash data, so treat this as a practical design consideration rather than a quantified performance claim.

2. Too much grout in wet areas

Grout lines can add visual texture, but they also add places that require cleaning. In wet areas, grout can discolor, develop mildew, or break down. That is a maintenance risk to plan for, not a guarantee that every grout installation will fail. If easier upkeep matters more than a grid of small tiles, consider finishes that use fewer grout lines.

3. A vessel sink that compromises the vanity

A vessel sink sits above the counter, which can take up usable surface area and make cleaning around the basin less convenient. Its height also affects comfort: LaMarque says a vessel sink may feel too high or too low depending on the installation. Her simpler alternative is an undermount sink paired with a solid-surface vanity top.

  • Maximum Load-bearing Capacity: The ceramic basin and the shelfcan hold up to 30kg, and the drawer can hold 20kg. The freestanding floor cabinet is strong and can bear the weight of your daily necessities; however,to ensure normal use, please do not put anything overweight on the shelves
  • Built for Everyday Use: With double doors, sturdy metal handles, and smooth-sliding rails, this bathroom vanity offers convenient access to stored items. Floor-protective pads at the bottom prevent unwanted scratches and wear. And for proper installation, the height from the ground to the wall drain and the water inlet of the water pipe should be between 18.3 and 26.4 inches

4. A showerhead planned around the wrong user or routine

A showerhead that is too low can be uncomfortable for taller users. LaMarque suggests plumbing at seven feet, but that is her design recommendation—not a building-code requirement or a universal installation standard.

Also consider how you actually shower. A rain shower can be enjoyable when you want to be fully drenched, but LaMarque recommends pairing it with a hand shower or standard showerhead for regular use. That gives the household a more adjustable everyday option instead of making the rain head the only choice.

5. A standalone tub that is hard to clean or too small to enjoy

A freestanding tub can be difficult to clean around if there is little access behind or beside it. Before choosing one, consider whether you can comfortably reach the floor and surfaces around it. The tub should also be large and deep enough for the soak you want, and the hot-water heater must be able to supply the needed volume. LaMarque’s article gives no capacity calculation, so have the tub and hot-water requirements assessed for the specific fixtures and home rather than relying on a generic number.

6. Too few useful outlets

A single outlet at the vanity may not serve everything a household uses: toothbrushes, towel warmers, bidets, and other appliances can compete for access. Think beyond the obvious counter location. LaMarque suggests considering an outlet behind the toilet for a future bidet and outlets inside drawers or cabinets for small appliances. Placement must still be checked against applicable local electrical rules; the designer’s suggestions do not establish that every location is permitted.

Two upgrades the designer says clients appreciate

Heated flooring

LaMarque singles out warm bathroom floors as a comfort feature, particularly at night and first thing in the morning. If you are considering floor heating, treat it as an upgrade to discuss during renovation planning rather than an essential feature for every bathroom.

Eye-level sconces

Lighting positioned at face level can make makeup application and grooming easier, according to LaMarque. Consider eye-level sconces as part of the vanity lighting plan, especially if the room will also have overhead lighting.

How to apply these lessons before committing

  • Prioritize daily use: Decide whether warmth, easy cleaning, comfortable reach, or a particular look matters most to the people who will use the bathroom.
  • Check the actual layout: Consider access around a tub, usable counter space at the sink, and where appliances will be plugged in.
  • Plan for more than one routine: A companion hand shower or standard showerhead can make a rain-shower setup more versatile.
  • Confirm project-specific requirements: Have plumbing, hot-water capacity, and outlet locations reviewed for the chosen fixtures, home, and local rules.

The six regrets and two favored upgrades come from designer Emily LaMarque, founder and principal designer of Emily LaMarque Design Studio, in an AOL article published October 2, 2025. They are design observations, not the results of a separate customer survey or a set of measured performance tests.
