How cup design changes the egg
Perforated and solid cups make different trade-offs. Good Housekeeping’s Kitchen Appliance and Innovation Lab published a comparison on November 12, 2024, saying it tested six egg poachers. It assessed release, egg shape and doneness, flavor, and cleanup, and said tests were repeated twice. Its surfaced selections illustrate three different formats; the results are that publisher’s reported review findings, not a current independent confirmation of every listing or product detail.

Compatibility claims are not interchangeable. Nordic Ware describes its Non-Stick Universal Egg Poacher Insert as universal, while Our Place presents its poacher as an accessory designed for the Always Pan. Treat those as separate manufacturer claims, not a guarantee that either product fits every pan.
- Measure the pan’s inside diameter and depth against the insert’s dimensions.
- Check that the insert or cups sit securely and leave room for the lid to close.
- Confirm the handle, rim, or other support points do not interfere with the pan.
- Check capacity and storage needs, especially if you plan to cook several eggs at once.
- Follow the care and use instructions for the exact product; do not infer dishwasher safety or cooking method from the material alone.
Follow the maker’s cooking instructions
Egg-poaching times are product-specific. Eggssentials’ instructions for its poacher pan call for a small amount of water and covered steam cooking, with a stated range of 3½ to 6 minutes depending on the desired firmness. That is guidance for that product, not a universal timing rule for other pans, cups, or microwave cookers.

For its microwave egg poacher, Nordic Ware advises cooking in short intervals, allowing the eggs to stand, and using a hot pad because hot steam escapes. Use the exact model’s instructions and take care when opening a hot cooker; do not transfer timings or steps from one design to another.
