Cement backer board is a common, standards-recognized substrate, but it is water-resistant rather than waterproof on its own. Foam-core board can be part of an integrated water-control system when the specific product is approved and installed as directed. The right choice is the complete assembly: board, waterproofing, seams and penetrations, tile-setting materials, framing, and local approval.
What “best” means for a shower wall
A backer board supports tile; it does not automatically make a shower wall waterproof. Water control depends on how the board, waterproofing layer or integrated system, joints, penetrations, and shower transitions are designed and installed together. Compare complete assemblies rather than choosing by a board label alone.
The Tile Council of North America (TCNA) lists standards for both cementitious backer units and foam-core backer boards, as well as bonded waterproof membranes. Those standards identify recognized material categories and methods; they do not establish that every product is suitable for every shower or supply all product-specific installation details. Which backer-board types are used in showers?
Cement backer board
Cementitious backer units are a familiar substrate for tile. TCNA lists ANSI A118.9 (2023) for cementitious backer units and ANSI A108.11 (2023) for their interior installation. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Solution Center explains that cement board is water-resistant, but not waterproof unless it is specifically made as a waterproof product. In a conventional cement-board assembly, the water-control design must be provided separately or by a board product specifically made to be waterproof. The correct layer location, seams, corners, penetrations, and transitions depend on the selected system. Do not assume that any membrane or coating is compatible with every board, mortar, or tile installation.
Foam-core backer board
TCNA lists ANSI A118.18 (2023) for foam-core backer boards. Schluter describes cementitious-coated extruded foam board as a tile-backing option for tub and shower walls, with water-control features integrated into its product system. That is a manufacturer’s description of its system, not blanket approval for every foam panel or jurisdiction. Schluter: Shower system foam tile backer

For any foam-core product, check its exact listing, approved applications, installation details, tile compatibility, and local acceptance. Manufacturer claims about handling, cutting, or insulation should be weighed as product-specific features, not independent proof of superior shower performance.
Other wall-board categories
LATICRETE’s selection guide covers cement backer board, fiber-cement board, glass-mat and fiber-reinforced water-resistant gypsum products, cementitious-coated extruded foam board, and solid backing with a bonded waterproof membrane. It advises confirming suitability with the board manufacturer and using applicable TCNA guidance. How to compare complete shower-wall systems

There is no established universal cost or durability winner in the cited material. Ask for the product documentation and the proposed assembly details before comparing bids.
What installation details depend on the product?
Thickness, stud spacing, fastening pattern, seam treatment, and waterproofing method are not universal values. They must come from the current instructions for the actual board and water-control system, the applicable tile-installation method, and locally adopted code. TCNA’s listing includes ANSI A118.10 (2023) for load-bearing bonded waterproof membranes for thin-set ceramic tile and dimension stone, alongside its board standards. - Identify the exact board and waterproofing products proposed for the shower.
- Get the current installation documents for each product and confirm they describe a compatible assembly, including joints and transitions.
- Confirm that the assembly and materials are allowed by the locally adopted code and accepted by the authority having jurisdiction.
- Have the installer specify how the assembly will be built and documented before work begins.
Check local code and product approval
Requirements depend on the jurisdiction. For example, the 2022 New York City Building Code requires materials used as a base for wall tile in tub and shower areas, and wall and ceiling panels in shower areas, to be listed in the applicable table and installed according to manufacturer recommendations. For a project elsewhere, check the locally adopted code and ask the building department or qualified contractor whether the exact product and assembly are accepted. Availability, listings, code adoption, and installation instructions can change; use current documents for the products being installed.
