For permanent cooling, a ductless mini-split is a strong option; a portable AC can work if its exhaust has a short, sealed route outside. Before choosing equipment, reduce heat gain by insulating and air sealing the garage, then size the system for the space’s actual conditions.
Quick Answer: Best Cooling Options for a Garage With No Windows
Choose based on whether you can install outdoor equipment or make a sealed exhaust route, how often you use the garage, and whether your climate is dry or humid.
| Option | Best for | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Ductless mini-split AC or heat pump | A regularly used workshop, gym, or hobby space | Needs an outdoor unit and a route for refrigerant lines; capacity should match the garage’s heat load. |
| Portable AC | Temporary or lower-commitment cooling | Must exhaust heat outdoors through a suitable, sealed opening; less efficient than a mini-split, according to PNNL. |
| Evaporative cooler | Dry climates where outdoor air exchange is possible | Depends on dry air, requires air exchange, and adds moisture. |
| Fans and heat-gain reduction | First steps or support alongside AC | Fans improve perceived comfort but do not refrigerate the garage. Insulation, air sealing, and shading reduce heat gain. |
No Window Does Not Mean No Vent
A real air conditioner absorbs heat indoors and rejects it outdoors. A mini-split moves heat to an outdoor unit through refrigerant lines. A portable AC needs an exhaust route outside. If there is no outdoor route, the hot exhaust stays in or returns to the building; a portable AC cannot cool a closed garage as intended without it.
For a windowless garage, plan the outdoor route before buying equipment. A portable AC may use an appropriate wall opening or sealed door insert. Keep the route direct and seal and insulate around the duct penetration. PNNL advises a direct route outdoors for windowless interior spaces and recommends insulation and air sealing around penetrations.

Best for Permanent Garage Cooling: Ductless Mini-Split
A single-zone ductless mini-split is a strong choice for a garage used regularly as a workshop, gym, or hobby space. It does not need a window or a connection to the home’s ductwork. Its indoor unit connects to an outdoor unit through refrigerant lines. Heat-pump models can also provide heating.
Trane describes a mini-split as a potentially good way to cool a garage, while Carrier notes that ductless systems provide independent temperature control. These are vendor recommendations, not results of an independent comparison. Have an experienced HVAC professional assess the garage and recommend suitable capacity.
Plan the Installation
Before installation, consider where the outdoor unit can go and how refrigerant lines can reach the indoor unit. Carrier says a ductless system needs only a small wall opening for the refrigerant line. Electrical requirements and local permit rules vary, so confirm them for the specific project with a qualified professional and local authorities.
Portable AC: A Conditional, Lower-Commitment Option
A portable AC can be useful if you can route its hot exhaust outdoors and seal the opening. PNNL says portable AC systems are less efficient than window AC or mini-split heat pumps and require flexible ducts to send heat outside. Do not vent the exhaust into an attic or another enclosed space as though that removes heat from the building.
Plan the exhaust route before buying: keep it direct, and seal and insulate around the duct penetration. Compare portable units using their applicable capacity rating and confirm the unit suits the space; a label or room-size estimate alone cannot establish the right capacity for a hot garage.

- [Peak Efficiency with Full DC Inverter Tech] This 10,500 BTU SACC(14000 BTU ASHRAE 128) portable air conditioner, suitable for cooling room up to 500 Sq.Ft., boasts a 13.6 CEER rating verified by DOE, representing the pinnacle of energy efficiency in its market. Since we don’t inflate the BTU rating of our unit, its size may be larger compared to some other "mini" models that falsely advertise 14,000 BTU. ❗❗❗Unit dimensions: 15.5" D × 17.7" W × 29.3" H — please make sure your space can accommodate this true full-size 14,000 BTU unit (not a "mini" model with inflated specs)
- [Dual-Hose Cooling] Unlike single-hose portable AC units for room that can cause negative pressure and hot air influx, our dual-hose system ensures rapid cooling and maintains balanced indoor pressure for faster, more efficient room temperature control (61°F - 90°F). If you're upgrading from a single-hose unit, you can expect a cooler, more comfortable summer
- [Say Goodbye to Compressor Noise] Inverter Mode reduces the compressor's frequency to 50% load within 2 mins, lowering noise to about 45dB. This allows our Inverter AC to actively adjust compressor frequency for noise control, alongside traditional fan speed settings. You'll no longer have to endure the noise from compressor while you sleep
- [Your Room Doesn’t Need Full Power All the Time] A typical 10,500 BTU SACC portable AC can draw around 1,300 watts at full power. Traditional fixed-speed ACs mainly adjust fan speed, which usually changes power use by only a few dozen watts. Gasbye Inverter ACs adjust compressor output instead: Turbo Mode runs at about 800–1,300 watts for fast cooling, while Inverter Mode lowers power to about 500–800 watts when less cooling is needed. That 400–500 watt difference lets you choose full-power cooling for hot days or lower-power operation for milder nights—helping reduce electricity use
- [Night-Friendly Controls] Backlit remote for easy nighttime use, plus a Display Off feature that turns off the top panel lights for undisturbed sleep
Evaporative Coolers: Only a Fit in Suitable Conditions
Evaporative coolers use water evaporation to cool air. They may help in dry conditions, but they require air exchange with outdoors and add moisture. They are not equivalent to refrigerated AC, and they are generally a poor fit in humid conditions. The U.S. Department of Energy lists evaporative cooling among home-cooling approaches; PNNL also notes the need for outdoor air exchange.
Garage AC Sizing: Get an Assessment, Not a Guess
A garage’s cooling load depends on factors such as insulation, ceiling height, climate, sun exposure, air leakage, and how the space is used. Do not rely on one universal BTU-per-square-foot rule.
Carrier gives 12,000–24,000 BTU as a possible range for a two-car garage, depending on insulation, ceiling height, and climate. That is Carrier’s vendor guidance, not an independent sizing standard. Ask an HVAC professional to assess your specific garage before selecting a permanent system.

Insulation and air sealing can help reduce the heat entering the garage and help an AC system operate more efficiently. Start by checking the garage door, walls, ceiling, air leaks, and surfaces exposed to strong sun. PNNL recommends insulation, air sealing, shading, and limiting internal heat sources as ways to lower heat gain; Trane notes that garage insulation helps AC efficiency.
- Inspect the garage door, walls, and ceiling for insulation gaps.
- Seal air leaks around doors and other openings.
- Shade surfaces exposed to strong sun where practical.
- Consider internal heat sources and how often the garage door is opened.
- Then have the system sized for the improved space and its actual use.
Installation and Safety Considerations
A mini-split needs an outdoor unit, refrigerant-line routing, and an appropriate electrical supply. A portable AC needs a suitable outdoor exhaust route and a sealed opening. Installation details and permit requirements depend on the equipment and location; verify them with qualified professionals and local authorities rather than assuming one rule applies everywhere.

Consider a qualified HVAC professional for mini-split selection and installation, electrical work, or any project involving an exterior opening. A professional can assess the garage’s heat load, recommend capacity, and identify installation requirements for your location.
Our Practical Recommendation
For a regularly used garage, consider a properly sized ductless mini-split after improving insulation and air sealing. For temporary cooling, portable AC is an option only when its exhaust can be routed outdoors and the opening sealed. In dry climates, an evaporative cooler may suit a garage with outdoor air exchange; in humid conditions, added moisture can make it a poor choice.
The right system depends on heat rejection, the garage’s insulation and air leakage, climate, use, and installation constraints. Reduce heat gain first, then choose equipment based on an assessment of the specific space.
