Some container plants can spend warm months outdoors and return indoors before cold weather, but no plant is automatically suited to every room, yard, or climate. The right choice depends on the species and cultivar, local temperatures, available light, and whether you can move its container.
What “indoors and outdoors” really means
For most houseplants, the phrase describes seasonal flexibility—not the ability to thrive anywhere. A container lets you change a plant’s location when light or temperature is unsuitable, but its care needs remain specific. Water use varies with light, temperature, humidity, pot size and material, growing medium, plant type, and growth stage, according to North Carolina State University Extension.
The available guidance does not establish eight particular species as universally suitable for both indoor and outdoor growing. Instead of treating any list as a guarantee, use these eight selection options as starting points, then check the chosen species and cultivar for temperature limits, light needs, water, mature size, and toxicity.
Which plants can grow indoors and outdoors?
1. Foliage houseplants suited to containers
Consider a foliage plant that tolerates container culture and can fit the light available in both locations. “Foliage houseplant” is a broad category, not a promise of sun or cold tolerance; confirm the needs of the exact plant before moving it outdoors.

2. Sun-tolerant foliage plants
If you want a container to spend time in a sunnier outdoor spot, select a species or cultivar specifically able to handle that exposure. Even then, introduce outdoor light gradually: a plant accustomed to a bright indoor window can scorch in direct sun.
3. Shade- or filtered-light foliage plants
For plants not adapted to intense sun, plan on a sheltered outdoor position with shade or filtered light. Outdoor shade is not identical to indoor light, so watch for stress as the plant adjusts.

4. Culinary herbs grown indoors with adequate light
Herbs can be grown indoors when they receive enough sunlight or supplemental LED or fluorescent light. University of Maryland Extension also recommends well-drained soil and containers with drainage for indoor herbs. See its container and indoor herb guidance.
5. Herbs moved outdoors seasonally
Some container herbs may be moved outdoors for suitable warm-season conditions, but check each herb’s temperature and light requirements. Outdoor exposure is not interchangeable among herbs, and a plant grown indoors should be acclimatized before it receives stronger light.

6. Annual herbs for one growing season
Annual and perennial herbs have different seasonal handling. Treat an annual herb as a seasonal choice rather than assuming it will return year after year; Maryland Extension distinguishes annual from perennial herbs in its guidance.
7. Perennial herbs with a seasonal plan
A perennial herb may need a different winter strategy from an annual. Before choosing one for a movable pot, establish its cold tolerance and whether its mature size and care requirements make bringing the container indoors practical.

8. Outdoor annual foliage plants that can be overwintered indoors
Some plants grown as annual foliage plants outdoors may be candidates for indoor overwintering, but that does not mean every annual tolerates indoor conditions. Check the particular plant’s light, temperature, and space needs before relying on this approach.

Compare the exact plant’s requirements with both locations and your ability to move it. Container growing offers placement flexibility, but it does not remove the need to match conditions to the plant.

- Indoor return: Decide where the plant will go before cold weather arrives, and whether that spot provides suitable light.
University of Maryland Extension’s indoor plant selection guidance can help with indoor suitability; the exact plant’s care information is still essential.
Can I move my houseplants outside in summer?
Yes, if the plant tolerates the outdoor conditions and you acclimatize it. Maryland Extension recommends waiting until nighttime temperatures remain above 60°F before moving tropical houseplants outside. This is a general extension recommendation for houseplants, not a guarantee for every species or climate. Check the plant’s own tolerance and your local forecast.
- Choose a sheltered starting location. Begin in shade or filtered light rather than putting an indoor plant straight into strong sun.
- Increase light gradually. For plants that tolerate more sun, Maryland Extension advises a gradual transition over about two weeks. Favor morning sun where appropriate.
- Watch moisture and growth. Outdoor containers dry faster. Check the growing medium more often; increased growth can also raise water and fertilizer needs.
Changes in light, humidity, moisture, fertilizer, and temperature can stress plants. The University of Minnesota Extension’s May 21, 2026 guidance on houseplants outdoors likewise emphasizes the transition and the risk of sun damage.
How do I bring houseplants back inside?
- Use temperature as the cue. Bring tropical houseplants in as nights approach the plant’s lower temperature limit. Maryland Extension’s general houseplant cue is to bring them back as nights begin dropping below 60°F; use species-specific guidance where it differs.
- Inspect for pests before carrying plants indoors. Check leaves, stems, and the pot. If treatment is needed, use insecticidal soap or horticultural oil only as labeled.
- Move the plant to its brightest suitable indoor spot. It may yellow or drop leaves while adjusting to lower light; monitor its condition rather than assuming that outdoor care can continue unchanged.
