There is no single best 400 CFM range hood for every kitchen. A 400 CFM rating describes airflow, not how effectively a hood captures cooking pollutants or whether it fits your cabinets, cooktop, and ductwork. Choose by installation type, capture performance, duct requirements, noise, filters, and whether the parts you need are included. The models below are manufacturer-documented examples in the 400 CFM class, not a tested ranking.
400 CFM range hoods to compare
These examples show how much the 400 CFM category varies. Confirm the precise model, current specifications, and installation manual before buying; manufacturer listings do not establish comparative effectiveness, street price, stock, or retailer availability.
| Model | Form and airflow information | Installation and other stated details |
|---|---|---|
| Broan Alta BQLA130WH | 30-inch under-cabinet hood; 400 CFM. | Broan lists a sound rating of 0.4 sones, a depth of 22 inches, and ductless recirculation capability. The ductless kit is not included. Broan product specifications. |
| Zephyr Siena Wall ENERGY STAR ZSI-E30BS-ES and ZSI-E36BS-ES | Wall-mounted models with 290 and 400 CFM blower settings. | Zephyr lists ducted installation with vertical or horizontal ducting and an optional duct-cover extension; the Siena is not recirculating. Zephyr product specifications. |
| Elica Aria | Under-cabinet hood with a four-speed, 400 CFM internal blower. | Recirculation is possible with an available kit. Elica product specifications. |
| Imperial 400 CFM series | Available in insert, island, under-cabinet, and wall-pyramid forms. | Individual examples list a single 8-inch duct and model-specific sones ranges; check the exact model for its dimensions and ratings. Imperial product listings. |
What 400 CFM does—and does not—tell you
CFM is airflow: cubic feet of air moved per minute under the conditions used for a product rating. It does not, by itself, tell you what share of cooking emissions the hood captures. The U.S. Department of Energy says capture efficiency varies widely among residential hoods in its residential range-hood guide.
A separate DOE project reports that its smart range hood prototype had a capture-efficiency goal of at least 90%, achieving 90% at 250 CFM and 98% at 400 CFM. Those are results for that project’s prototype—not a performance claim for the commercial hoods listed here or for 400 CFM hoods generally. See the DOE project page.

How to choose the right model
1. Start with the hood form, width, and space
Decide whether your layout calls for an under-cabinet hood, a wall-mounted hood, or an insert. Measure the available space and check the hood’s dimensions against the cooktop and cabinetry. A model’s listed airflow cannot compensate for a hood that is incompatible with the installation.
2. Check capture evidence and operating settings
Look for capture-efficiency data for the exact model and test condition, if available. Do not use the DOE prototype’s result as a substitute for model-specific evidence. Where a hood has multiple blower settings, note which setting corresponds to the stated airflow and what the manufacturer reports for noise at that setting.

- Disappears Into Your Cabinetry — 24-inch insert range hood installs flush inside your custom cabinet. Only the stainless steel front panel and control buttons are visible for a seamless, built-in look.
- 400 CFM for Compact Cooktops — Perfect for small ranges, apartment stoves, and secondary kitchenettes. Two-speed fan handles daily cooking without excess noise.
- Low-Profile Design with LED Lighting — The slim profile leaves cabinet space for storage above. Built-in LEDs provide focused cooktop illumination.
- Easy-Access Aluminum Filters — Front-loading filters slide out for quick cleaning. Permanent mesh design means no replacement costs.
- Best for Custom Kitchen Builds and Renovations — Designed to integrate with your cabinetry. A favorite of contractors and DIYers who want ventilation without visible appliances.
3. Match the duct to the hood and the route
Confirm the required duct diameter, outlet direction, and discharge route in the installation instructions. The DOE guide recommends following manufacturer duct-sizing instructions and keeping the duct run short and straight where feasible; it also advises sealing duct joints. A restrictive or poorly routed duct can undermine the planned ventilation.
4. Compare ducted exhaust with recirculation
Ducted hoods move exhaust outdoors; recirculating hoods return filtered air to the room. They are not interchangeable configurations. The 2024 International Residential Code (IRC) generally requires domestic cooking exhaust to discharge outdoors through a smooth-interior, airtight duct with a backdraft damper. Its stated exception allows a listed ductless hood installed according to its instructions when other mechanical or natural ventilation is provided. See the 2024 IRC, Chapter 15. The code is a model code, and local adoption or amendments can differ.

- ENERGY-SAVING LIGHTS: The energy-efficient 1.5-Watt LEDs are long-lasting and provide bright high lumen lighting for better visibility at night
- 2-YEAR LIMITED: Our customer support team is based proudly in the USA. Product Dimensions: 27.8" (W) x 11.5" (D) x 11.4" (H). Electrical Requirements: 120V/60Hz, 3 Prong Plug. Duct Size: 5.9" Round. ETL Listed: ETL Listed products demonstrate compliance to North American safety standards published by relevant NRTLs (Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories)
If you plan to recirculate, check that the exact hood supports that configuration and identify any required kit. For example, Broan lists a ductless option for the Alta but says its kit is not included; Elica lists an available recirculation kit for the Aria. Zephyr states that the Siena is not recirculating.
5. Check noise, filters, and accessories
Compare noise ratings at the relevant fan speed rather than treating a single rating as universal across settings. Check filter type, cleaning instructions, and replacement requirements. Also verify whether a ductless kit, duct cover, or other installation accessory is included or optional; an accessory shown on a product page may not come with the hood.

The 2024 IRC provision cited here addresses makeup air when a dwelling’s exhaust system is capable of exhausting more than 400 CFM and the dwelling contains specified non-direct-vent, non-mechanical-draft fuel-burning appliances. See IRC Section M1503.6. A hood rated at exactly 400 CFM does not, by that threshold alone, establish that every makeup-air requirement is resolved: confirm the installed system’s capacity and applicable local rules. Model-code text is not proof of what a particular jurisdiction has adopted. Ask the local building department or a qualified professional about requirements for your project.
Quick Recap
Before you buy
- Confirm the exact model number, hood type, width, depth, and fit with the cooktop and cabinetry.
- Check the airflow settings and seek capture-efficiency evidence for that model rather than relying on CFM alone.
- Verify duct diameter, route, outlet direction, and outdoor discharge requirements in the current installation manual.
- Decide between ducted exhaust and recirculation, then confirm that the selected model supports your choice.
- Compare noise at the speed you expect to use, along with filter cleaning and replacement details.
- Confirm which kits, duct covers, and other accessories are included and which must be purchased separately.
- Check local building-code requirements, including any applicable makeup-air provisions.
