Steam is a cycle option, not proof that a washer removes stains better. In Consumer Reports’ test of seven washers, stain removal was about the same with and without steam, while steam used more energy on every tested machine. Choose a washer first for cleaning performance, fit, capacity, efficiency and reliability; then decide whether a specific steam cycle is useful to you.
What steam does—and what the evidence says
“Steam” does not describe one standardized washer feature. Its operation and cycle availability vary by model. For example, LG says its front-load steam process heats a small amount of water at the bottom of the washer to create steam before the main wash begins. That description applies to the LG feature documented by the manufacturer, not every steam washer. Check the manual for the exact model you are considering: LG Front Load Washer Steam.
Consumer Reports tested normal cycles with and without steam on seven washers from five manufacturers: five front-loaders, one high-efficiency top-loader and one agitator top-loader. In those tests, stain removal was about the same either way. Rich Handel, who oversees Consumer Reports’ laundry appliance testing, said, “The steam option didn’t improve a washer’s cleaning ability.” The publication also found that most tested machines used more water with steam, all used more energy, and steam substantially lengthened some cycles. Those results describe the tested models and settings, not every washer or steam cycle. Consumer Reports’ steam-setting test, updated August 10, 2023.
The available evidence does not establish that steam generally removes odors or makes laundry fresher. If a particular model offers a steam cycle for a purpose you care about, consult its cycle descriptions and manual rather than assuming all steam options do the same thing.

What to prioritize when choosing a washer
Compare real models on the basics before paying extra for a feature label. Consumer Reports identifies cleaning performance, reliability and capacity among the relevant buying criteria. Its washing-machine buying guide offers a useful framework.
- Cleaning: Look for independent, model-specific cleaning results. A steam label by itself is not evidence of better stain removal.
- Capacity and laundry type: Consider the size of your usual loads and whether you wash bulky bedding. Consumer Reports says its tests found washers with a claimed capacity above 4.5 cubic feet can fit a king-size comforter. Capacity alone does not guarantee fit for every comforter, so check model guidance and dimensions.
- Physical fit: Measure the installation space and check the washer’s overall dimensions, configuration, door clearance, hookups and access for service. If stacking, confirm that the washer supports it and that the required space and components are available.
- Efficiency: Compare the exact model’s yellow EnergyGuide label for energy use and estimated annual cost. ENERGY STAR identifies Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF) and Integrated Water Factor (IWF) as efficiency measures. Its program-level comparison says certified washers use about 20% less energy and 30% less water than regular washers; that is not a guarantee for an individual model. ENERGY STAR clothes washer guidance.
- Cycles and time: Check what the model’s steam cycle is designed to do, whether it suits your laundry needs, and how long it takes. Cycle names and availability differ by washer.
- Reliability, price and service: Use current evidence for the specific model and your market. Do not infer durability or value from a steam feature.
How to decide whether steam is worth it
- Shortlist washers that meet your cleaning, capacity and installation needs. Rule out models that do not fit your space or laundry routine before comparing optional cycles.
- Read the manual for each candidate. Confirm which steam cycles are included and what the manufacturer says they are intended to do. A general “steam” label does not tell you how a cycle works.
- Compare resource use and cycle time. Use the model’s EnergyGuide label and available efficiency information, then check the manual or cycle details for steam-cycle duration and requirements.
- Pay for steam only if its specific use matters to you. The independent test cited here does not show improved stain removal from steam across the seven tested machines. It also cannot determine whether a different model’s particular cycle will help with another goal.
Care after purchase
Use the washer maker’s maintenance instructions for cleaning and routine care. If you use a washing machine cleaner, confirm that it is suitable for your model and follow the product and washer directions.
