Fit and placement matter more than picking a brand: the arrestors must match your connections and sit close to the shutoffs or other source of the banging. Manufacturer guidance supports this recommendation, but the available sources do not establish one brand as the best performer.
Why do pipes bang when the washing machine shuts off?
Water hammer is a pressure shock associated with water flow stopping or changing suddenly. The shock can make supply pipes bang or vibrate. A washing machine’s quick-closing inlet valves are a plausible trigger: when a valve closes, moving water stops abruptly and the resulting shock can travel through the plumbing. Oatey’s installation guide and explanation of banging pipes describe the problem and possible causes.
What kind of arrestor should you choose?
For a typical residential washer, Sioux Chief recommends an ASSE 1010-certified AA-size arrestor on each supply line. Its residential guidance also calls for placing an arrestor within six feet of each culprit valve. These are manufacturer recommendations, not the result of an independent comparison of brands. Confirm the exact product’s certification and follow local code and its installation instructions. Sioux Chief’s residential guidance and installation instructions cover sizing and placement.
Compare connection and installation style
| Installation style | When it may suit the setup | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Hose-thread connection at the washer supply | An existing washer hookup where an accessible hose connection is available. | Check the washer hose thread, shutoff-side geometry, and available clearance. Watts lists a 3/4-inch hose-thread adapter for fitting an arrestor at washing-machine supply lines; verify the exact model and connections before buying. Watts product information. |
| Shutoff-mounted arrestor | A washer hookup where the arrestor can be installed at the shutoff valves. | Check that the product matches the valve connection and that the installation will be stable. Oatey recommends mounting its washer arrestors at the shutoffs for greater stability. Oatey installation guide. |
| Pipe- or tee-connected installation | New work, a built-in arrestor box, or plumbing that calls for a pipe-installed unit. | Match the arrestor and fittings to the pipe material and plumbing layout; follow that product’s instructions. Oatey installation guide. |
In short, choose by connection compatibility, placement, and the exact product instructions—not an unsupported claim that one brand is universally best. Availability and product configurations can change.

Where do water hammer arrestors go on a washing machine?
Install one on each line, hot and cold, close to the relevant shutoff or valve. Sioux Chief specifies placement within six feet of the culprit valve. For washer-specific installations, Oatey discusses fitting arrestors at the appliance connections or shutoffs and recommends the shutoffs for stability. Treat the six-foot distance as Sioux Chief’s guidance, and check local code and the chosen product’s instructions.
Can you screw an arrestor onto washer hoses?
Some products are designed for hose-thread washer connections; others need a shutoff connection, tee, or pipe-specific fitting. Check the threads and clearances at both ends of the hookup before selecting a unit. A 3/4-inch hose-thread adapter is one documented option for washer supply lines, but compatibility depends on the exact arrestor and the actual plumbing arrangement. Watts lists its adapter configuration; follow the instructions for the product you choose.

How to install a hose-connected arrestor
These general steps reflect Oatey’s project guidance for its arrestors. Use the exact product instructions for the connection type you have; pipe-connected products may require different fittings and procedures.
- Turn off the water supply at the shutoffs.
- Disconnect the supply line, catching any residual water.
- Attach the arrestor in the intended position and reconnect the line. Avoid overtightening.
- Restore the water supply and inspect the connections for leaks.
- Run the washer and listen for remaining banging or vibration.
Oatey says its arrestor can be installed in any orientation, and Sioux Chief says its residential arrestors may be installed at any angle. Those statements are product guidance, not a reason to disregard the instructions for a different model. Oatey’s guide and Sioux Chief’s instructions provide their respective recommendations.

What if the banging continues after installation?
- Check that each arrestor is close to the relevant valve or source, and confirm that the connections are sound and leak-free.
- Look for loose supply piping that may move when the washer valve closes.
- Check whether hoses are touching the washer or nearby surfaces and transmitting vibration.
- Consider whether another part of the plumbing layout or another source of vibration is responsible. An arrestor cannot be assumed to eliminate every plumbing noise.
Oatey identifies incorrect placement, loose piping, and the wider plumbing layout as possible explanations for continued banging. If the noise is severe or persistent, a leak is present, or concealed piping is involved, have a qualified plumber assess the installation. Oatey’s troubleshooting discussion describes these possibilities.
