For many small shops, a turbine HVLP system is the simpler starting point; a compressor-fed conversion gun is practical only when the compressor can deliver the airflow that gun requires. Spraying also calls for deliberate ventilation and controls matched to the coating’s hazards.
Choose a spray system that fits your shop
WOOD Magazine’s “Spray Finishing Made Simple,” updated December 19, 2024, recommends high-volume, low-pressure (HVLP) equipment for small-shop spray finishing. The magazine’s published operating figures and finish-use estimates are useful comparisons, not guaranteed performance for every gun, coating, or operator. EPA guidance also recommends matching the tip, hose, compressor, and pressure to the application.
| Setup | What it requires or does | Best fit and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional compressor-fed spray gun | WOOD Magazine describes operation at 40–60 psi and estimates about half the finish is wasted, with high pressure contributing to blowback and overspray. | May use existing compressor equipment, but consider overspray containment, air quality, and coating use. |
| HVLP turbine system | The magazine describes a package with a gun, hose, and turbine supplying dry, filtered air at 10 psi or less. It says HVLP deposits 60–80% of finish on the project. | A dedicated system suited to small-shop work; confirm that its manual approves the coating and intended use. |
| HVLP conversion gun | The magazine describes 20–30 psi operation and an air demand of 5–12 cubic feet per minute (cfm). | Can connect to a compressor, but check the exact gun’s required airflow against the compressor’s delivered cfm at operating pressure. The magazine notes this demand exceeds that of most home-shop compressors. |
These ranges and percentages are WOOD Magazine’s published guidance, not universal product specifications. For HVLP’s potential benefits and setup matching, see the EPA HVLP Spray Guns Best Practices Checklist.
Check compressor air quality and capacity
Compressed air can carry water vapor; oil-lubricated compressors may also send oil droplets down the line. WOOD Magazine recommends an inline filter or drip leg placed far enough downstream for water and oil to cool and condense before reaching the gun. Follow the filter and gun manufacturers’ installation guidance. For a conversion gun, use the gun manual’s airflow requirement and the compressor’s delivered-capacity specification—not just its tank size—to decide whether the setup is adequate.

Prepare the coating and match it to the gun
Start with the coating label and the spray-gun manual. Coatings differ in formulation and viscosity, and a nozzle suitable for one product may not suit another. WOOD Magazine describes using a Ford #4 viscosity cup to measure flow time, then comparing the result with the gun manual’s chart for nozzle selection.
- Stir the finish gently so it is uniform without whipping bubbles into it.
- Lift the Ford #4 cup straight out of the finish and time the stream until it first breaks.
- Compare that time with the spray gun manufacturer’s viscosity chart and select the nozzle it specifies.
- Thin only if the coating manufacturer and gun instructions allow it, and use the thinner and amount they specify.
WOOD Magazine gives 5–10% distilled water as an example for some water-borne topcoats; it is not a general thinning recipe. The magazine also offers spraying above 60°F and, if possible, around 50% humidity as practical setup tips, not universal specifications. Check the coating label for its actual temperature, humidity, drying, and recoat conditions.

Select a coating for the project and follow its safety information
There is no single best clear finish for every woodworking project. WOOD Magazine discusses water-borne polyurethane or acrylic finishes, dewaxed shellac, and lacquer. Water-borne products contain resin suspended in water along with other ingredients; as the liquids evaporate, the resin forms a film. Dewaxed shellac uses denatured alcohol as its carrier and may be used as a first-coat sealer. The magazine names Zinsser Bulls Eye SealCoat as one example. Lacquer is solvent-based and uses lacquer thinner as its base.
Choose according to the project and the product’s instructions, and verify that the product is suitable for spraying. Read its safety data sheet (SDS) as well as the spray-gun manual: the chemicals and hazards vary by coating. WOOD Magazine expresses a preference for water-borne finishes and cautions about oil-based finishes, shellac, and lacquer, but respiratory protection and facility controls must be determined for the specific product and operation rather than generalized from a finish category.

Set up ventilation and control exposure before spraying
OSHA states, “Spray operations can present both physical and health hazards to those involved.” Its guidance identifies inhalation and skin contact as exposure routes and notes that some coating chemicals are toxic or flammable. Consult the OSHA woodworking finishing and chemical hazards guidance for exposure routes and controls.
For covered workplace operations using flammable or combustible materials, OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.107 spray-finishing standard requires mechanical ventilation adequate to remove vapors, mists, or powders while spraying and for sufficient time afterward. It also restricts open flames and spark-producing equipment in or near spray areas, subject to the standard’s exceptions. OSHA’s woodworking finishing eTool says manual spraying should take place in a spray booth or a separate ventilated spray area. These are workplace requirements and guidance; a home shop should not assume that an improvised arrangement complies.

- Read the coating label and SDS before opening or spraying it; identify inhalation, skin-contact, and fire hazards.
- Provide ventilation and exhaust suitable for the coating and operation, and keep ignition sources away from the spray area as required by applicable rules.
- Select protective equipment based on the product hazards and applicable workplace requirements; do not rely on a generic respirator recommendation.
- Plan for ventilation to continue after spraying when needed to clear residual vapors, in line with the coating instructions and applicable requirements.
Apply thin, even passes
WOOD Magazine’s technique aims to wet the surface without leaving runs or drips. Set the gun up according to its manual, then keep it moving so each pass lays down an even coat.
- Begin moving and pull the trigger before the spray reaches the project’s near edge.
- Move across at a steady pace with the gun parallel to the surface; avoid swinging it in an arc.
- Continue past the far edge before releasing the trigger.
- Overlap each pass by about half its width so the finish coverage stays even.
- Apply only enough finish to wet a vertical surface without runs, and build coverage with several thin coats rather than one heavy coat.
This approach is intended to reduce blotches, drips, runs, and uneven coverage. Follow the coating’s drying and recoat directions before applying another coat.
