Yes. You can make a square-corner picture frame with butt joints instead of 45-degree miters. For a practical, reinforced version, use pocket-hole screws at the corners: cut the frame members square, assemble them as butt joints, and clamp them in place while driving the screws. A plain butt joint by itself is not the same method and should not be assumed to provide equivalent strength.
How the pocket-hole butt-joint frame works
A butt joint meets the square end of one frame member against the face or edge of another. It avoids the precise 45-degree cuts and fit-up required by a miter. In the method demonstrated by George Vondriska at Woodworkers Guild of America, pocket-hole screws mechanically reinforce the corners; the tutorial does not treat an unreinforced butt joint as sufficient on its own. Prepare square, consistent pieces
Cut the ends square and make matching frame members consistent in length. Plan the frame around the size of the picture or panel and its intended arrangement, but the tutorial excerpt does not provide a universal sizing formula or cut list. Check the pieces together before fastening so the corners meet cleanly.
Fasten with pocket screws
- Arrange the members into a square-corner frame with the butt joints aligned.
- Drill pocket holes in the appropriate members using a pocket-hole jig and screws compatible with that jig and stock.
- Clamp the frame members securely to the work surface and keep the joint aligned.
- Drive the pocket screws while the pieces remain clamped. The tutorial warns that a member can climb or shift as a screw is driven if it is not held down.
The tutorial’s workflow includes a table saw and router table, but those are tools in that particular setup, not universal requirements for every no-miter frame. A pocket-hole jig and compatible screws are the directly relevant equipment for reproducing its reinforced corner method.

Not every frame without miters uses the same joint or construction sequence. Choose an approach based on the look you want and the tools or jig you can use.

Which method should you choose?
- Choose pocket-hole butt joints if you want a straightforward square-corner layout with mechanical reinforcement and have access to a pocket-hole jig.
- Choose cope-and-stick if you want a molded interior profile and can use the required router-bit setup.
- Choose a mission-style design if its appearance suits the project and you can use its special jig.
