Screw Fundamentals: Threads, Fit, Materials, and Tightening

Screw compatibility depends on the full thread specification—not appearance alone. Learn how to identify pitch, diameter, thread form, material information, and application-specific tightening guidance.

A screw fits only when its thread system, nominal diameter, pitch, and thread form match the mating nut or threaded hole—and the fastener is suitable for the job. Screws that look alike can use different standards or dimensions. Identify the full specification before installing a replacement, and follow the application’s specified tightening instructions rather than relying on a universal torque value.

What makes a screw fit?

A screw has an external thread that engages an internal thread in a nut or threaded hole. Standards provide shared definitions for thread forms, designations, dimensions, tolerances, and acceptability. ASME describes its screw-thread standards work as covering “terminology, symbols, forms, designations, dimensional limits and acceptability requirements.” ISO likewise explains that standards help ensure fastener reliability, durability, and compatibility.

In practice, fit depends on more than whether the screw can be started by hand. Confirm the measurement system, nominal diameter, pitch, thread form, and relevant tolerance or specification. A screw may start in a mismatched hole and still bind, damage the threads, or fail to make a reliable joint.

Thread geometry and the terms used to describe it

Thread terminology lets a drawing, standard, or fastener marking describe dimensions precisely. These conventional geometry definitions are useful for identification; close-tolerance or safety-critical work calls for the full applicable standard and drawing.

  • Crest: the top surface of a thread.
  • Root: the bottom surface between adjacent thread flanks.
  • Flank: the sloping side joining a crest and root.
  • Major diameter: the largest diameter across the external thread crests.
  • Minor diameter: the smallest diameter near the external thread roots.
  • Pitch diameter: an effective diameter used to assess how mating threads fit.
  • Pitch: the axial distance between corresponding points on neighboring thread forms. Inch-series threads are commonly described by threads per inch; metric designations state pitch in millimetres.
  • Lead: the axial distance a screw advances in one turn. On a single-start thread, lead equals pitch. On a multiple-start thread, lead can exceed pitch.

Inch-series and metric threads are different systems

Inch-series and metric threads use different designations and measurement conventions. For example, an inch thread count expressed as threads per inch is not the same kind of value as a metric pitch expressed in millimetres. A similar-looking diameter or thread profile does not establish that the two systems are interchangeable.

ASME’s standards overview lists ASME B1.1-2024 for Unified Inch Screw Threads, including UN, UNR, and UNJ forms. ISO’s fasteners page lists metric standards, including ISO 965 for thread tolerances. Use the standard and designation specified for the assembly rather than converting by appearance or approximate measurement.

Coarse, fine, and power-screw threads

Coarse and fine fastening threads

Coarse and fine describe different pitches within a thread series. Neither is universally stronger or better: the appropriate choice depends on the specified fastener, mating nut or threaded hole, and application. Match the actual diameter and pitch designation instead of assuming that two threads with the same nominal diameter will fit.

Standard fastening threads and ACME threads

Many fastening screws use thread forms intended to join components. ACME is a distinct screw-thread form with its own dimensional and tolerance standard, ASME B1.5. That standard includes provisions for single-start and multiple-start variants. ACME threads are associated with power-screw applications, where a screw transmits motion or load; they should not be treated as interchangeable with a fastening thread simply because the parts appear similar.

How to identify an unknown screw

  1. Look for documentation or markings. Check the assembly drawing, equipment manual, packaging, or fastener markings for the standard, system, size, and property information. A drawing or manufacturer instruction is more useful than a visual guess.
  2. Determine the thread system. Establish whether the specification is inch-series or metric. Do not presume one from the screw’s appearance.
  3. Measure nominal diameter and pitch. Measure the thread and use a pitch gauge to compare the spacing against known thread pitches. A pitch gauge checks pitch only; it does not establish diameter, thread form, tolerance, material, or suitability.
  4. Identify the thread form and mating part. Check whether the screw is meant to engage a standard fastening thread, a special threaded hole, or a different form such as ACME. Use the mating nut’s or component’s specification where available.
  5. Verify the complete specification before replacement. Confirm that the candidate fastener matches the required system, diameter, pitch, form, and any specified material or property class. If those details cannot be established, consult the equipment manufacturer or a qualified fastener supplier rather than forcing the screw.

A pitch gauge can help with one part of identification, but it cannot certify compatibility on its own. ASME’s historical account traces William Sellers’s proposed U.S. screw-thread system to 1864, describing a 60-degree profile and a systematic approach to pitch, form, and depth—an early example of why standardized characteristics matter.

What standards and property markings tell you

Standards define thread dimensions and tolerances so components can be specified and assessed consistently. The U.S. federal FED-STD-H28 record describes basic screw-thread dimensional and acceptability requirements, with design and use information where needed; Section 1 establishes uniform nomenclature and symbols for drawings and dimensional tables. DLA’s ASSIST record lists H28 as active, with a document date of 2024-02-16 and next review due 2029-02-14. Its Section 1 record lists that section as active, dated 2025-01-23, with next review due 2030-01-22.

Thread size and material or property class answer different questions. ISO 898-1:2013 specifies certain mechanical and physical properties for carbon- and alloy-steel bolts, screws, and studs within its scope, which includes specified triangular ISO metric threads and size ranges. ISO reports the edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2025 and remains current. A property-class marking does not, by itself, establish corrosion resistance or suitability for every joint; the standard does not specify corrosion resistance, shear resistance, fatigue resistance, or torque–clamp-force performance.

For construction and equipment repairs, follow the drawing, product specification, or manufacturer’s fastener requirements. Do not select a replacement based only on matching dimensions if the original specification also calls for a particular material or property class.

How tight should a screw be?

There is no reliable universal torque value for a screw size. The relationship between applied torque and resulting tension depends on friction, materials, temperature, humidity, fastener and mating-part finishes, surface condition, and tightening equipment. Lubrication or a change in finish can therefore make a familiar torque value produce a different joint result.

SAE J 1701M-2022 is advisory guidance for metric-series fasteners and says torque for a critical joint should be determined experimentally using the exact components. For an actual installation, use the torque or tightening procedure given by the equipment manufacturer, engineering drawing, or applicable standard. If the joint is critical and no instruction is available, get application-specific engineering guidance rather than guessing.
