If LED Christmas lights glow faintly after a timer switches them off, the timer or another switching device may still be allowing a small amount of current through. That is a plausible cause—not a diagnosis from the glow alone. Check the light set’s instructions, try only a safe plug reversal if the plug and receptacle allow it, and leave any suspected outlet-wiring issue to a licensed electrician.
Why can LED Christmas lights glow when the timer is off?
LEDs can produce visible light from a small amount of current. Brennenstuhl identifies timers, Wi-Fi outlets and power strips, and foot-switch strips with single-pole relays as devices that may let enough current through for plugged-in LED lights or strings to glow faintly. This is one possible explanation, not proof that every timer is faulty. Brennenstuhl’s guidance, updated August 18, 2026, applies to the device types it names.
The broader phenomenon is often called LED ghosting. Leviton describes it as faint light when a switch is off and associates it with leakage current, including with neon-illuminated switches. Lutron likewise notes that some dimmer-and-LED combinations may allow a small amount of electricity through after shutoff. Those sources address lighting controls generally; they do not establish that a plug-in holiday-light timer has the same cause.
Check the light set and timer before troubleshooting
First confirm that the timer is actually in its off period. Some light sets have their own controller, status light, or timer mode, so apparent light from an indicator or an active setting may be mistaken for ghosting. Follow the instructions for the exact model rather than assuming all Christmas lights behave alike.

For example, the cited EMOS Christmas LED Lights manual specifies use of the supplied power source and says not to repair the chain if it malfunctions. Its six-hours-on/18-hours-off timer schedule and red active indicator apply only to the model covered by that manual; they are not universal settings.
Safe checks, in order
- Verify the off state. Check the timer schedule and any separate light-set controller or indicator against the product manuals.
- Try plug reversal only if permitted. For a plug-in timer, Brennenstuhl says reversing the plug resolves the issue in most cases in the situation it describes. Do this only if the plug and receptacle are designed to allow reversal and it can be done without force. Do not defeat or obstruct an outdoor receptacle cover.
- Note what changes. If the faint glow remains, record the timer and light-set models and whether the behavior occurs only with that control. A steady glow or intermittent flicker by itself does not conclusively identify the cause.
- Stop before opening electrical equipment. If the receptacle prevents plug reversal or you suspect outlet wiring, ask a licensed electrician to assess it. Do not open the outlet or swap conductors yourself.
- Follow manufacturer limits. Use only the specified power supply and observe the maker’s malfunction instructions for the particular light set.

When to call an electrician
A faint glow alone does not prove that an outlet needs rewiring. If a non-reversible plug or receptacle prevents the simple plug check and wiring may be involved, have a licensed electrician assess the installation. Brennenstuhl names an electrician as the alternative in that situation; its guidance is not a reason to modify wiring yourself.
