A hardworking home office does not require a dedicated room: a desk corner, closet, or shared-space setup can work when it fits your tasks and can be adjusted to you. Start with screen, chair, keyboard and mouse, lighting, and storage; then add finishes and accessories that solve a real problem.
There is no single correct workstation arrangement for everyone. OSHA and CDC/NIOSH guidance supports adjusting the setup to the person and task, changing posture, and taking breaks—not treating any one product or posture as a cure-all.
Start Here: Set Up the Workstation
- Position the screen: Put your primary monitor in front of you, generally about 20–40 inches from your eyes, with its top at or slightly below eye level. Adjust for comfortable reading rather than forcing yourself into a fixed position. (OSHA)
- Fit the chair and desk: Support your feet and keep your shoulders relaxed. If a fixed-height desk leaves your keyboard too high, consider a suitable keyboard tray or another adjustment.
- Place the keyboard and mouse: Keep the keyboard directly in front and the mouse beside it, with elbows near your body and wrists aligned with your forearms. (OSHA)
- Control light and glare: Use shades or drapes as needed, and position the screen at a right angle to a bright window where possible. Prefer indirect or shielded light if reflections are distracting. (OSHA)
- Make room for movement: Keep the space under the desk clear and vary your posture. Short breaks and a change of task can be useful; standing all day is not a requirement. (CDC/NIOSH)
Claim a Workable Location
1. Improve the quietest reliable corner you have
Start with a location you can use consistently. A dedicated room is helpful, but it is not a prerequisite for a workable setup.
2. Place the desk to manage window light
Where possible, set the screen at a right angle to the brightest window. If you cannot, use adjustable shades and check for reflections at the times you work. (OSHA)

3. Try a corner layout when a straight wall is too shallow
A corner can provide extra depth for a monitor and input devices. Check that frequently used items remain within comfortable reach. (OSHA)
4. Turn a closet into a compact office thoughtfully
A closet can make use of otherwise idle space. Keep enough seated clearance and consider ventilation and comfort before making it a regular workspace.
5. Define a living-room work zone
A narrow console, bookcase, or rug can give a shared-space office a visual boundary without remodeling.
6. Use a folding or rolling work surface only if it is stable
Check that the surface remains steady while typing and can hold your monitor and input devices in a usable position.

7. Give work gear a nearby home
Use a shelf, drawer, or lidded bin so you can clear the desk when work is done.
8. Put regular-use items in close reach
Keep the keyboard, mouse, phone, and reference materials near the part of the desk where you work, rather than at its far edge. (OSHA)
9. Leave the area beneath the desk clear
Keep enough space to move your legs and change position. Avoid using the foot area as permanent storage or equipment parking. (OSHA)
10. Signal when a shared space is in use
A desk lamp, reversible sign, or desk mat can let housemates know when you are working without requiring a permanent room divider.

12. Choose a chair you can adjust
Look for a chair that fits your body and supports your lower back. Try it if possible; appearance alone does not determine fit. (OSHA)
13. Consider a lumbar cushion if it feels comfortable
A small cushion or roll is one possible adjustment for a chair that does not fit you well. It is not a medical treatment and will not suit everyone.

16. Separate a laptop screen from its keyboard for long sessions
An external display or docking setup can let you place the screen independently of the keyboard. (OSHA)

A door, curtain, screen, or room divider can mark the work zone without changing the room itself.

Books, soft furnishings, and closed storage can change how a room feels, but do not assume they provide a specific level of sound isolation.
53. Choose a background that protects household privacy

55. Hang headphones on a hook or stand
Keep them ready for calls without taking up the main work surface.
56. Take short movement breaks
CDC/NIOSH notes that short hourly breaks can reduce computer-worker discomfort. Adapt breaks to your work and needs.
57. Try the 20-20-20 pattern as an optional reminder
NIOSH’s work-from-home guidance suggests looking about 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes as an eye-rest cue.
58. Alternate computer work with other tasks
When your work allows, change tasks rather than staying in one posture for long uninterrupted sessions. (OSHA; CDC/NIOSH)
59. Treat standing as one posture option
A standing-height counter or adjustable desk can support posture changes; it is not a mandate to stand all day. (CDC/NIOSH)
60. Create start and end rituals
Opening a planner, turning on a lamp, closing a laptop, or packing a work bin can help mark the boundary between work and home.
Safety, Energy, and Maintenance
61. Enable computer power-saving settings
Leave sleep and power-saving settings enabled when appropriate. The Department of Energy says this can reduce annual computer energy use by up to 27%.
62. Group low-load devices thoughtfully
Manage office plug loads and consider an advanced power strip only if its operating behavior suits the devices connected to it. (DOE)

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a separate room for a home office?
No. A desk corner, closet, or defined area in a shared room can work. Prioritize a stable surface, a comfortable workstation arrangement, manageable light, and a place to store work items.
How far should my monitor be from my eyes?
OSHA generally gives a preferred viewing range of about 20–40 inches and advises placing the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level. Adjust the position so you can read comfortably without leaning forward.
Should I buy a monitor arm?
A monitor arm is one option for adjusting screen height, distance, and tilt. Before buying, check monitor weight and VESA pattern, desk thickness, mounting method, arm reach, and wall clearance. A stand or riser may suit your setup better.
Is a standing desk better than sitting?
Standing is an option for changing posture, not a requirement to stand throughout the day. OSHA and CDC/NIOSH guidance supports adjusting the workstation and varying posture and activity.
How can I reduce screen glare?
Try positioning the screen at a right angle to a bright window, using adjustable shades, and choosing indirect or shielded lighting. Tilt the monitor as needed and recheck readability. (OSHA)
What should I do if my home office has dampness or mold?
Do not cover the issue with fragrance or décor. Address moisture at its source and seek qualified local help when needed. EPA advises keeping home humidity below 60%, ideally 30%–50%.
How can I keep office cords safe?
Do not overload outlets or power strips, hide cords under rugs, or route cords where they can be pinched or walked on. Use appropriate protected power strips and replace damaged extension cords. (USFA)
How do I protect my home office Wi-Fi?
Use WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, unique credentials, and current router software when supported. Consider a guest network for visitors, and keep your software updated. (FTC)
