Bats flying outside at night are usually foraging in the area. Many species eat night-flying insects, so their presence can be a welcome sign of wildlife activity and may contribute to natural insect control. A sighting alone does not show that bats roost in your house, identify the species, or prove they are reducing mosquitoes in your yard.
Why bats may be flying over your yard
Bats are nocturnal, and many forage for insects after dark. If you see them making repeated passes above a garden, lawn, or near outdoor lights, they may be hunting insects that are active there. Their presence is consistent with nearby food and usable habitat, but it does not reveal exactly where they roost or what they are eating.
Bats do provide ecological insect-control services. How much that matters on one property depends on the bat species, available prey, and local conditions. A few bats overhead are not proof that a pest problem will disappear.
Will bats eat mosquitoes?
Some bats eat mosquitoes, but a yard sighting cannot tell you how many mosquitoes they are consuming or whether their activity will noticeably change mosquito numbers. A historical USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service tip sheet gives “up to 600 mosquitoes in an hour” as an upper example for a single little brown bat. That is a species-specific historical example, not a typical rate or a promise of mosquito control for a particular yard.

Does seeing bats mean they are living in your house?
No. Bats flying outdoors may be feeding or moving through the area; the sighting by itself is not evidence of an attic or wall-roost. Bats can roost in buildings, but an outdoor observation does not establish that they have done so.
If you find a bat indoors, do not handle it or try to chase it. Guidance from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife treats a single bat in a home as potentially lost or confused and advises keeping distance, separating it from people and pets, and opening an exterior exit where appropriate. That is California guidance; procedures and wildlife rules can differ elsewhere. If a person or pet may have had direct contact, promptly contact local public-health and animal-services authorities for advice.

Ways to make a yard more bat-friendly
Habitat improvements support wildlife; they are not guaranteed pest-control treatments. The best choices depend on your region, local bat species, and what is practical for your property.
| Option | What it can provide | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce pesticide and herbicide use | Can help preserve insects that bats and other wildlife feed on. | Use pest-management approaches suited to the specific problem; this does not guarantee bats will visit. |
| Grow locally suitable native plants and evening-blooming flowers | Can support native insects, including night-flying insects that may serve as food. | Choose plants for your region and site rather than relying on a universal plant list. |
| Keep or add habitat features such as water, leaf litter, or downed logs where appropriate | Can contribute to a more varied wildlife habitat. | Fit features to the property and local conditions; they are not a promise of bat activity. |
| Limit disruptive outdoor lighting | Reduces light pollution and disturbance for nocturnal wildlife. | Balance wildlife considerations with needed lighting and safety. |
| Consider a bat house | Offers a possible roosting shelter. | Occupancy is not assured; placement and suitability matter. |
These approaches are consistent with recommendations from the National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Bat Conservation International, and the Bat Conservation Trust. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service describes a bat house as a way to provide shelter for local bat species, while habitat guidance also emphasizes food, water, native plants, and reduced pesticide use. None of these general recommendations establishes the effect on an individual yard’s insect population.

When a bat sighting calls for caution
- Bats flying outdoors: Observe from a distance and leave them undisturbed.
- A bat inside a room: Keep people and pets away, do not touch or chase it, and consult local wildlife or animal-control guidance for the appropriate response.
- Possible contact with a person or pet: Seek prompt advice from local public-health and animal-services authorities.
- A suspected building roost: Contact a qualified local wildlife professional or relevant authority before attempting exclusion or repairs that could affect the animals. Protections and exclusion rules vary by location.
Keeping cats indoors is also among the National Park Service’s wildlife recommendations. It can reduce the chance of encounters between cats and bats.

Bats circling outdoors are most usefully understood as nocturnal wildlife using the surrounding area, often to forage. That can be a positive sign of local habitat and may bring insect-eating benefits, but it is not evidence of a building problem or a dependable mosquito-control service. Enjoy the sighting from a distance, and treat any indoor bat or possible contact as a separate situation requiring local guidance.
