Dandelions are perennial plants with toothed leaves, bright yellow flowerheads and deep taproots. You can eat their leaves, flowers and roots, but culinary use is not proof of medicinal benefit. In a garden, they can provide food for wildlife—or be plants you choose to control, depending on your goals.
How to identify a dandelion
A common dandelion grows a rosette of leaves from the base of the plant. The leaves have toothed edges, though their shape varies. Yellow flowerheads, each made up of many small florets, grow on hollow stalks. If a stalk or leaf is cut, it may release milky latex.
After flowering, the head becomes a globe of fruits, each with a parachute-like tuft called a pappus that helps the fruit travel on the wind. Dandelions are perennials with deep taproots. Their familiar name comes from the French dent de lion, or “lion’s tooth,” referring to the leaves.
Why the name does not always identify one species
Taraxacum officinale is a familiar botanical name, but “dandelion” can refer to multiple Taraxacum species. Kew describes the group as taxonomically complex: scientists differ on how to classify it, and DNA can distinguish microspecies. Many British dandelions reproduce apomictically, without ordinary fertilization. For casual garden identification, the familiar features are useful; a precise species identification may be more difficult. Kew’s overview and its Plants of the World Online profile provide further botanical detail.

Where dandelions grow
Botanical sources describe dandelions as native to Europe or Eurasia and now widely found in temperate regions. They grow in varied settings, from grasslands and woodlands to rich soils in urban and rural areas. Their regional status varies, so it is not accurate to call dandelions native or invasive everywhere.
What dandelions are used for
Food and drink
Dandelion leaves are eaten as a leafy vegetable and have a notably bitter taste. Flowers can flavor drinks such as dandelion wine, and roasted, ground roots can be used as a coffee substitute. These are culinary uses; they do not establish that the plant treats or prevents illness. Kew describes these food uses.

Traditional and promoted medicinal uses
Flowers, leaves and roots have traditional medicinal uses in several cultures. The U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) notes that oral dandelion products are promoted for indigestion and oral or topical products for joint pain. Promotion and traditional use are not the same as demonstrated effectiveness.
What the evidence says about health claims
NCCIH says, “There’s no compelling scientific evidence supporting the use of dandelion for any health condition.” It also reports that very little research has been done on the herb. Preliminary laboratory studies have examined extracts for anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antiviral properties, but findings in laboratory settings do not show that dandelion benefits people. NCCIH’s dandelion overview explains the evidence and its limits.

Dandelion safety: food is different from supplements
NCCIH considers dandelion likely safe in amounts commonly found in food. Safety is less established for larger amounts, such as those used in herbal products. NCCIH reports evidence of topical allergic reactions in some people with atopic dermatitis. Evidence is conflicting on whether people sensitive to related plants, including ragweed or daisies, may have cross-reactions.
There are also theoretical reasons to suspect interactions with antidiabetes, anticoagulant, antiplatelet and diuretic medicines. Safety above food amounts during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not well known. If you take medicines or supplements, ask a health professional before using dandelion as an herbal product.

Dandelion flowers offer nectar and attract bees and butterflies; small birds eat the seeds. Kew also describes dandelions as a food source for insects. That wildlife value can be one consideration in a garden, but dandelions are not a substitute for a varied range of planting. The Royal Horticultural Society’s guidance describes their value to wildlife alongside ways to manage them.

How to manage dandelions in a garden
There is no universal right choice: you might welcome flowers, limit their spread, or remove plants to maintain the look of a lawn or bed. The choice depends on your preferred appearance, the wildlife value you want to retain, the labor you are willing to spend and whether you are trying to prevent seeds or remove established plants.
| Approach | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Tolerate plants | You are comfortable with their appearance and want to retain their flowers and seeds as a food source for wildlife. | Plants can flower and disperse fruits on the wind. |
| Deadhead flowers | Your priority is limiting new seed spread while leaving plants in place. | This does not remove the taproot or the established plant. |
| Remove seedlings | You want to catch plants while they are small or remove those growing out of bounds. | You need to check the area and repeat as seedlings appear. |
| Dig out established plants | You want to remove individual plants from a lawn or bed. | The taproot can break; remaining pieces can regrow, so thorough extraction takes care. |
The RHS recommends non-chemical approaches such as deadheading and removing seedlings. For established plants, a dandelion weeder or other taproot weeding tool can help reach beneath the crown. Cornell notes that the fleshy taproot may break and regrow from pieces, so simply cutting off the top may not remove the plant. RHS guidance and Cornell’s dandelion profile cover these control considerations.
