Choose a fan by the job it needs to do: a desk fan directs air at one person, while a room fan circulates air across a wider area. For year-round use, a reversible ceiling fan can change airflow direction between seasons. The models below are candidates from current buying guides, not a hands-on ranking; verify the exact model, availability and price before buying.
Start with the space and the airflow you need
A fan moves air to improve perceived comfort; it does not replace air conditioning. Pick the form factor that suits the placement, then compare controls, noise, cleaning and other features that matter in your space.
| Need | Fan type | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Air aimed at a desk or bedside | Desk or table fan | Footprint, tilt, noise, speed choices and ease of cleaning |
| Floor fan with a narrow footprint | Tower fan | Oscillation, speed, stability, grille cleaning, remote and timer |
| Adjustable-height direct breeze | Pedestal fan | Height, head tilt, oscillation, base stability and controls |
| Simple airflow or window placement | Box fan | Size, noise, portability, window fit and storage |
| Circulation across a room | Air circulator | Airflow reach, direction, oscillation range, noise and controls |
| Bring outdoor air in or exhaust indoor air | Window fan | Reversibility, window fit, weather and insect protection, seasonal removal |
| Fixed, year-round room circulation | Ceiling fan | Diameter and room fit, installation, efficiency, noise, reversible direction, lighting and controls |
| Personal airflow on the move | Handheld or wearable fan | Battery runtime, weight, charging, airflow direction and safe attachment |
Oscillation, multiple speeds, remotes, timers and portability can be useful, but each adds value only if it fits how you will use the fan. NBC Selected’s buying guide also recommends considering fan type and size, speed options, oscillation and price (NBC Selected’s 2026 fan guide).

Air circulators
- Dreo TurboPoly Fan 508S: WIRED’s category candidate. WIRED reported measuring 29 dB despite a 20 dB brand marketing specification; it also reported 55 dB on high and 29 dB on low. These are that reviewer’s readings, not a standardized cross-product test.
- Vornado Vora 8: A WIRED air-circulator candidate to compare for reach, controls, noise and cleaning.
- MeacoFan 1056P: TechRadar recommends this model as an air circulator and describes evaluating fans for airflow, speeds, controls, noise and price in reviewers’ homes. That is TechRadar’s testing process, not a test conducted here.
Ceiling fans
- Honeywell Carnegie Ceiling Fan: NBC Selected describes a 52-inch, five-blade model with dimmable light and reversible direction, citing the brand. Confirm the current manufacturer’s specifications and that the size suits the room before choosing it.
WIRED also reported 57 dB high and 33 dB low for the Dreo Nomad One, and 69 dB high and 42 dB low for a Vornado 660. Treat these as that outlet’s model-specific readings rather than directly comparable standardized measurements; fan model, setting and test conditions matter. Read the WIRED 2026 fan guide and TechRadar’s fan guide for their respective category coverage and testing descriptions.
How to choose a fan for a bedroom or sleeping area
For a bedside fan, prioritize directed airflow, low-speed settings, stable placement and a grille or design you can clean. A desk or table fan is often a better fit than a floor model when the goal is airflow close to one sleeper. For room circulation, compare a tower or air circulator by its sound at the speed you are likely to use, not only its highest setting.
Rank #2
- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Sound figures in reviews are useful context, not a universal ranking: measurement methods and conditions can differ. WIRED’s reported readings for the Dreo TurboPoly 508S, Dreo Nomad One and Vornado 660 should therefore be read as outlet-specific results rather than a standardized comparison. Also consider whether a timer or remote is valuable from bed, and whether the unit can be cleaned without difficulty.
Can a ceiling fan help in winter?
Yes, a reversible ceiling fan can be useful year-round by changing the direction of airflow. ENERGY STAR says most residential ceiling fans—and all ENERGY STAR-qualified fans—can reverse motor and airflow direction for year-round operation. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the appropriate setting and use.

For an efficient ceiling-fan comparison, ENERGY STAR uses a weighted metric across multiple speeds and standby power, expressed as cubic feet per minute per watt (CFM/W). Its criteria vary by fan diameter and distinguish standard fans from hugger fans, so compare models within the correct size category. See ENERGY STAR’s ceiling-fan performance criteria rather than comparing a single airflow number in isolation.

- Measure the space and confirm the fan’s dimensions, placement and clearance.
- Match the form to the job: personal airflow, room circulation, window ventilation or fixed ceiling installation.
- Check speed options, oscillation, tilt, remote or timer only where those features solve a real need.
- Look for cleaning instructions and consider how easily dust-prone grilles or blades can be accessed.
- For a window fan, verify window fit, reversible operation if needed, and how the opening will be protected when the fan is installed or removed.
- For ceiling fans, confirm installation requirements, room-size fit, control and lighting needs, and the relevant ENERGY STAR size category.
- Confirm the precise model variant, current specifications, seller, stock and price on the manufacturer’s or retailer’s current page.
Carl Prouty, a tech expert at Abt Electronics, told NBC Selected that fans are “much quieter than window or wall air conditioners and they use far less energy, so their operating costs are much lower.” This is expert commentary, not a guarantee for every fan, air conditioner, room or use pattern.
