It depends on the heater. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says to turn off portable space heaters while you sleep. For central heating, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recommends setting the thermostat back further overnight in winter. Those are different situations: thermostat control of a furnace or boiler is not the same as leaving a portable heater running beside bedding.
The available guidance here comes from government agencies, not interviews with HVAC professionals, so this article does not attribute recommendations to unnamed pros.
What should you do with each type of heater?

Why turn off a portable space heater before bed?
Portable heaters can ignite nearby combustibles, and sleeping makes it harder to notice a problem promptly. CPSC says to switch one off while sleeping, regardless of whether it has an automatic shutoff; the guidance does not establish that this feature makes overnight operation safe.
In a 2025 release, CPSC estimated that portable heaters were involved in an average of 1,600 fires per year, with averages of 70 deaths and 160 injuries annually over 2019–2021. Should you turn down central heat overnight?
For central heating, DOE’s winter guidance recommends keeping the thermostat at the lowest comfortable temperature while you are awake and setting it back further during sleep. A programmable thermostat can schedule that setback if it is compatible with your heating system; compatibility varies, so check before choosing or installing one.
DOE’s Consumer Guide to Home Heating and Cooling (2021) says a household can save 1% on heating bills for each 1°F thermostat setback during an eight-hour period. The guide also says savings can be up to 10% by setting the thermostat back when away or asleep. These are DOE’s guidance figures, not guaranteed savings for every home. Should you shut off the furnace entirely at night?
DOE’s furnace guidance says to consider leaving a furnace off during unoccupied hours or using a programmable thermostat to minimize unnecessary operation. It does not establish a universal rule to shut off every furnace overnight. The guidance differs by situation: it discusses unoccupied hours and thermostat scheduling, while DOE’s winter advice specifically recommends a lower thermostat setting during sleep.
