Knockdown hardware joins furniture panels on site, and some fittings are designed to let the furniture be taken apart later. Choose connectors by the actual panel thickness, hole layout and intended use—not by a generic name such as “cam lock.” For a repair, the existing bore pattern and matching parts matter as much as the connector type.
What knockdown hardware does
Knockdown fittings connect furniture components that are assembled after transport. Some designs are intended to be disassembled, but that does not mean every joint can be reopened indefinitely without wear or damage. Reusability depends on the specific fitting and furniture design; there is no general reuse-cycle count.
Common options include cam locks with connecting bolts or dowels, confirmat screws, cross dowels with bolts, and dowel pins used for alignment. These are not interchangeable: each requires compatible panels, holes and assembly methods.
Which connector suits the joint?

There is no evidence here for a universal strength ranking among these types. Follow the furniture design and fitting instructions rather than choosing on an unverified strength claim.

How to choose hardware that fits
- Start with the joint and its instructions. If the furniture came with an assembly manual or hardware list, use those diagrams as the controlling reference. For a new build, choose the connector specified by the design.
- Decide whether the joint needs to come apart. If so, choose a system designed for disassembly and use its matching parts. The number of times a particular joint can be reused is product-specific.
- Measure the panel and inspect the holes. Check the panel thickness and material, then match the fitting’s specified hole diameter, depth and drilling layout. A “cam lock” label alone does not establish compatibility.
- Match the complete set. For a cam system, verify the cam and connecting bolt or dowel together, including their dimensions and the cross-hole pattern. When replacing a missing part, compare it with the remaining hardware and furniture instructions; ask the furniture maker if the match is uncertain.
- Consider the finished appearance. Cam fittings are described by the cited supplier as concealed. Confirmat screw heads may be visible unless capped.
Specifications are model-specific. For example, one JINHAN 15 mm Minifix cam listing specifies use with 15–18 mm panels. That listing is not a general rule for other cams or manufacturers.

For a new build
Use a cam-lock drilling or installation kit suited to the project, and follow the kit and fitting instructions for hole position, size and depth. For flat-pack assembly or repair
- Lay out the hardware and identify cams, cam bolts or dowels, wood dowels and screws against the manual’s parts list.
- Check that each connector matches its intended holes and adjoining panel. Do not force a fitting or substitute a generic-looking part solely because it resembles the original.
- Assemble the panels in the sequence shown. Keep screws and bolts loose until the unit is assembled if the manual directs you to do so.
- Tighten the fittings as instructed once the relevant assembly stage is complete; do not overtighten or improvise beyond the instructions.
One furniture assembly manual states, “Do not tighten screws & bolts until the entire unit is completely assembled.” Apply that direction only when the manual is for the furniture being assembled; its brand attribution is not established here.

When a replacement part will not fit
- Compare the new part with the original in diameter, depth, length and engagement style.
- Recheck the panel thickness and existing bore pattern; the same broad fitting name can cover incompatible dimensions.
- Consult the furniture’s hardware list or contact its maker before altering holes or substituting connectors.
- If the design or matching parts cannot be confirmed, avoid forcing the joint. A mismatched fitting can prevent the panels from drawing together correctly.
